Additional information
Positive aspects of school
They understood where I was having problems and addressed them to help me understand better.
City/place
I'm actually a terrible tourist. Didn't go out much. Only shop for food. Enjoyed the restaurants. But have no knowledge of nightlife other than it was noisy.
Accommodation
The water pressure needs work and honestly should replace old toilets with new ones.

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
Location was great. Marion the cooking instructor was awesome.
Negative aspects
Teacher focused overwhelming majority of her attention and her eye contact during instruction almost entirely on the only male student in the class. Was like the female students were only observers and not participants. She exhibited little or no patience, was terse and it felt as if she was annoyed and inconvenienced.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Try different school in PDC or Ih in a different location.
Other comments
Very disappointed. Has a lot of potential but they squandered it on having a below par teacher. Just because a person speaks Spanish and has experience teaching grade school children doesn’t mean they are qualified to teach adults in a private professional school or university. A completely different skill set and training is required.
City/place
Beach was beautiful. Weather was stifling hot & humid during the day. Area was pricey but it is a tourist destination so not a complete shocker there. Restaurants were fantastic. People were very friendly.
Quality of teaching / language progress
This private one on one teacher was good. Would not call this a “Business Spanish” course but enjoyed the grammar instruction nonetheless.

Positive aspects of school
The locations of the school and the student apartment are excellent. After-class activities are well organized almost every day.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
I highly recommend this school because the teachers, school staff, and dormitory staff are friendly.
Other comments
Rooms in the dormitories are cleaned daily and kept in good condition. The water pressure in the showers is sufficient. There is a kitchen in the cafeteria and cooking utensils can be used freely. Rooms are equipped with a small refrigerator and freezer.
City/place
Dance events such as bachata, salsa, etc. are held within a 10-minute walk for about 100 pesos. Particularly recommended for those who like to dance.
Accommodation
The room had a TV but it was an internet TV. It would be better if I could watch some terrestrial broadcasting.

Frida Khalo Museum
Other comments
I have very fond memories of it.
City/place
Unfortunately, the beach is not very pretty, due to the presence of algae on the beach and in the water. This makes swimming unpleasant. It was hot, of course, but the humidity was rather difficult. Otherwise, the atmosphere was festive, with lots of tourists, stores and restaurants. The main street is very crowded. Several tours are available to visit the surrounding area at reasonable prices. As we couldn't swim in the sea, we found hotels with swimming pools for a fee.
Quality of teaching / language progress
Excellent courses
Accommodation
The room was spacious, clean and conveniently located. The air conditioning worked well. I have nothing to complain about. I am very satisfied.

Great staff. Welcoming and helpful.
City/place
I love the school, but the city scene was not for me. If you like a club scene, then you will like. It was noisy and expensive. It was difficult to practice Spanish outside of the school because so many people want to and can speak English. I would use the school again but do it at one of the other locations.
Quality of teaching / language progress
I did an intermediate course and it was well structured.
Accommodation
The rooms are basic but comfortable and clean. The air conditioning worked and that was really important as it is so humid.

I felt very comfortable at International House and would recommend it to anyone. In the afternoons, there is an additional voluntary programme (free of charge). Many classmates often do activities together after class. IH has been very familiar.
City/place
I liked Playa del Carmen very much as there are many possibilities. From the beach to cultural programmes or nightlife, everything is there. It is very big. You can get from A to B quickly by taxi (approx. 5€ in the city) or by collectivo (approx. 1€). The people were very open and friendly.
Quality of teaching / language progress
My course was very small (3 participants), which was of course great, as the teachers could pay more attention to the participants individually.

Negative aspects
As with all Spanish schools in Playa del Carmen, there are not many students, so the difficulty is that the level of the classes is uneven.

Great place nearby for Cenote diving. If you are interested, please contact Iguana Divers, a Japanese-owned diving shop.

Important to know. You pay for the textbook on site.
City/place
Playa del Carmen is very touristy. Therefore not the cheapest city by Mexican standards. By Swiss standards, however, life is much cheaper here. As a tourist you are often asked whether you want to buy something or go on a tour. For the language course, however, it was a good place to get acclimatized to the new country. There are many activities in the area.

Positive aspects of school
Because the school building is closed, classes were held in empty rooms at the student residence. The rooms had fans and air conditioning which was great! My teacher, Natalia, facilitated many lively discussions which allowed us to practice our fluency.
City/place
I enjoyed the time we spent in downtown Playa del Carmen! The restaurants were excellent, especially Zitla, Sushi Club and Yum Yum by George! My husband and I have a trip to the area planned for November and I plan to show him around the downtown area!
Quality of teaching / language progress
My main goal was to practice fluency and that is exactly what I was able to do!
Accommodation
The student residence was much better than I expected! The beds were extremely comfortable (I love a firm bed!) The only improvements I would recommend are adding a safe and providing wash cloths.

Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Staying at the residence looked much better for the price, versus homestay. Also, probably a better way to practice speaking with others.
Other comments
The teacher was very old school type who just asked us to answer worksheets. Not much interaction. Not much practice for learning the language. My 4 hours of private classes were MUCH better, as it was interactive and we practiced, not just filling in conjugations. I heard from 3 other students that a high level class was similar (worksheet based). Because it was such a small community (meeting in the same place for breaks, etc.) I felt I couldn't complain. It was a very weird experience. There were lots of negatives that I will write in a long letter to the school, so they are aware.

The residence was okay but the breakfast was misrepresented on your website. It was actually pretty bad. Scrambled eggs and toast. It would have been nice to have a Mexican breakfast with fruit and beans, etc. Also, regarding the teaching, I should have asked for homework and some information on what we would be learning the next day so I could use my time better to study pertinent information.

The front door to the residence is across from the church. We has a bit of a difficult time finding the front door when we arrived. You also might want to direct students to ask for the bus station close to the school. We walked with our suitcases from the one on Calle 4.

Insider tips about what future students should not miss
I entered as an Elementary Level student and stayed for 4 weeks. I really feel I needed at least two months but couldn't do that, due to family, other obligations. Would recommend staying longer if you are able. If not, plan to return within a year. I am continuing my studies at home, with Duolingo application as well as Rosetta Stone and CDs.

The air conditioning system could use some improvement. I realize this is a tropical environment, but it made it tedious to study at times.

Keep an open mind, because firstly you are in a different country and should be respected the traditions and culture, and secondly, you will meet people from all over the world. Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Nonstop bus from airport arrives less than one block from residence. No need to pay more. I paid $75 for transport from the airport, an unnecessary expense. The residence is almost ideal. It is close to the school and situated near restaurants and services. The rooms are basic but comfortable.
Other comments
The school has serious, but correctable problems. I came to improve my speaking, but did not receive a sufficient chance to do so, because of 7 students in my class. 7 is too many. Most of the 7 students spoke better than me. As a result, they dominated the discussions. Also, when my ability was initially evaluated, they determined my speaking ability was only intermediate level one, but they made no effort to determine my grammar level. As a result, I did not learn anything new in grammar. And sadly, I did not get enough chance to improve my speaking. The student residence is excellent, but the food needs improvement. It would not take much effort. Also, at the residence, students should be encouraged to speak only Spanish. Again, this would not take much effort. Because I did not learn much Spanish and because I spent money on transport, scuba diving and salsa which was not well organized, I have given the school a low rating. The problems can be corrected.
