Loxdale English Centre offers two courses on the Young Learner programme:
One for teenagers aged 13 to 17 years and one for pre-teens aged 8 to 12 years.
Loxdale loves teaching and inspiring young learners who come from around the world to learn English and about British culture and traditions. This course is designed to be interactive and enjoyable and aims to ensure you become confident in speaking English and are pushed to achieve your potential within all English skills.
The school offers one of the most comprehensive programmes in the UK and included everything in the courses fees so parents can rest assured that their child has plenty of fun things to do in a safe and caring environment. As well as afternoon and evening activities every evening Monday to Friday, we also take students on trips both on Saturdays and Sundays. Students are all given a weekly bus pass.
The hosts live within a 26 minute walk from the school. If they live further than 10 minute walk from the school, students are taken home by minibus, taxi or coach after their evening activity so we know that they are safely home at night.
English lessons
The school runs a popular, fun and academically rigorous course for both age groups. Both age groups have enormous potential as learners, and our lessons harness that through a wide range of fun and educational classroom activities of shorter duration, supported by a clear daily routine of learning. Suitable for all younger students of English, whether as an introduction to the language or as extra study for those talented students who already have a good level. In class the teachers make use of specialised EFL learning material and also use realia so students make the most of their stay in the UK. Loxdale even teaches the students about the places they will visit at weekends and various aspects of British culture and traditions so they learn more than just English.
Loxdale English Centre has the experience to make sure all students fulfill their learning goals while having a fun and memorable experience.
Welfare
The pre-teens are supervised by the teachers and staff at all times to ensure their safety and security whilst studying with at the school.
Students aged 12 year old can walk to and from school if they have their parent’s permission. They will not be allowed to walk around Brighton/Hove/Portslade at any other time without a member of staff.
If a pre-teen student is living with their parent, the parent is expected to bring their child to and from school each day. The staff will go through their programme with you so you know what times to meet him/her.
Students aged 8 to 11 are not allowed to walk anywhere off site without a member of staff, or with their parent if they are also here. This means that, if your child is living with one of our homestay providers, they must have a daily transfer (at extra cost). This transfer will pick them up in the mornings, take them home after the activities and then bring them back for the evening activity and back home.
All parents fill in a Safeguarding Form and e-mail this to the school before their child arrives at Loxdale. This gives the school information about their health and well-being.
Apart from occasionally at bedtime, it is rare to get students who are homesick. The school deliberately keeps students as busy as possible with a fully inclusive programme of lessons, activities every afternoon and evening (Mondays to Fridays) and trips on Saturdays and Sundays so they don’t have too much time to miss their homes.
Loxdale English Centre provides a safe, well-structured and lively environment where there is plenty of laughter and fun.
Social Activities
After their morning classes, the students then continue to have fun on our afternoon and evening social programme.
There is mixture of interesting and enjoyable art, crafts, drama, team games, visits and sports activities. All are supervised by lively and caring staff with good staffing ratios. The school keeps the staff to student ratio low to ensure that can pay individual attention to the students and make sure they are getting the most from the activity.

Course Description:
Our English with Drama Course combines our highly popular General English Course with an exciting and creative course covering theoretical and practical approaches to drama.
This course is available for students with an intermediate level of English and above.
Each morning you study English on our General English course and you can get more information on what these include here. This course offers you a special insight into English and British culture and will help support you to get the most linguistically from your drama sessions.
Drama Syllabus:
This course is designed to give you insight and experience from many different aspects of drama. Depending on when and how long you choose to study the course, these include.
Two Different Units:
Exploring and Developing an Actor’s Skills
Text Work – from Page to StageL
We work on texts leading to the performance of selected scenes in the final week of the course in the Barn Theatre. The skills and techniques covered in the first unit will be used in the rehearsal of the chosen scenes. The choice of plays and scenes will be dependent on the number in the class and the male/female ratio. The intention will be to choose texts that give good opportunities to all members of the class, to play roles that allow them to develop their acting skills.
Different styles of Acting include:
Physical Theatre:
Work on images, tableaux, metaphor and Expressionism to create non-naturalistic improvised work. We will look at texts that allow us to explore physical theatre techniques and develop physical theatre skills.
Commedia Dell’arte:
A practical exploration of the stock characters and key aspects of Commedia such as Lazzi. Building physical comedy skills. Then dividing into groups to rehearse and perform some Commedia scenarios.
Improvisation:
Exercises to introduce a variety of improvisation techniques such as Accepting, Building, Blocking, Thought tracking, Spotlighting, Hot Seating, and Rewind.
Mike Leigh:
Working in the style of Mike Leigh, the students will create naturalistic three-dimensional characters and then develop these characters in a variety of scenes. Scenes will be edited and rehearsed to create short pieces of drama. The students work towards putting on a short performance for fellow students.
Drama Lessons
We have a very experienced drama teacher who trained at The Central School of Speech and Drama in London. The course is taught partly at Loxdale and partly at the Southwick Community Centre in the Barn Theatre. This is a marvellous, professionally equipped theatre space, so students are able to work on their acting skills in an inspiring environment. The aims of this course include developing self-confidence, imagination, individual expression and creativity.
Please note, as the main learning focus of the drama lessons is not English, these are not accredited by the British Council.

Loxdale English Centre school is in a residential area and all the hosts live within a 26 minute walk of the school. There is a rigorous procedure for new hosts including visits by the trained staff, training, gas safety checks, references taken and, for those hosting children, police checks. The school also listens to student feedback of their host and whether or not to recommend them to other students.
There are bus routes all around our area and they go to the centre of town every 7 minutes during the day and every 20 minutes in the evenings. There is also a night bus.
Adults stay in a single room homestay host accommodation unless you have specifically asked to share with a friend or partner.
Homestay accommodation: Whilst living in homestay accommodation, your host will treat you as a member of the household, eating together and sharing the common living area. Most hosts only have one student at any one time but, on occasion, some hosts may have up to four students.

Most of the students aged 8 to 12 live in our residential centre where they receive 24 hour care and supervision.
The residential centre, Locks Hall, is within the grounds of Loxdale. There is lots of garden space for students to relax in and play sports, and as the accommodation is well away from busy roads the students will be very safe.
Whilst staying at Locks Hall students will be able to enjoy lots of facilities including a communal dining room, lots of outdoor space and free Wi-fi. Locks Hall has recently been refurbished and the centre’s location will enable us to offer students the opportunity to try new activities. The centre is small but offers students a fun, warm and caring atmosphere – a home away from home!
Where ever possible, students will share a room with a person of a similar age but a different nationality. There will be a maximum of 7 students in the centre.
