Positive aspects of school
"Compared to other language schools, the classes here are kept small, which means you can ask questions immediately if you don't understand something."
Negative aspects
"While this depends on the season, the low number of students in certain periods is a point of note."
Details of the review
City/place
"Compared to other cities in Mexico, crime here is almost non-existent. The safety level might even be better than in Japan. I felt extremely secure."
Accommodation
"Because I needed to communicate in Spanish, my Spanish skills improved quickly. Furthermore, my host family genuinely cares and takes action when something happens to me. They treat me like one of their own, so I never experienced homesickness or stress. Also, having my own private room makes it easy to concentrate on my studies."

Positive aspects of school
"I LOVED the school. The teaching was superlative. I am planning on returning and God willing bringing someone with me. The school did not offer excursions. I knew this before I arrived, so I do not think it is appropriate for me to comment on that. There was plenty for me to do on my own and any questions I had about traveling around in Guanajuato were accurately answered by the teachers there."
Negative aspects
"Not the fault of the school, but travelling here and there by taxi was often problematic. Taxis got lost and were sometimes late."

"I would encourage students to check out inter Cambios with local people as well as ex-pats."

"Guanajuato is beautiful. The people there are very friendly. People in the street are quick to wish you good morning and good afternoon. Everyone seems to take pride in the city. I never once felt unsafe. I enjoy it, but if you don't like walking up hills, Guanajuato might not be your best choice."

Positive aspects of school
"The quality of the instruction was excellent. The program I chose included classroom instruction for grammar/fluency and a separate program focused on the culture and history of Guanajuato. First, the instructor for the classroom portion was excellent. She explained pronunciation and grammar clearly and reinforced all instruction with opportunities for students to practice new concepts through discussion. The culture and history portion was also outstanding. We visited a number of historical and culture sites with Manuel, who clearly explained the context and significance of the sites. The state of Guanajuato is especially significant in regard to the struggle for Mexican independence. We visited museums, churches, an original silver mine. We also had a class to learn how to cook traditional Mexican dishes. If you want to sit in a room several hours a day and do worksheets, this is not the program for you. However, if you want a memorable program that improves your Spanish while learning fascinating culture and history, I highly recommend this school."
Negative aspects
"The facility is modern and very clean with an amazing view. There is a kitchen but no library. For me, it was a pleasant walk to the school; however, persons with mobility issues may be a bit challenged because Guanajuato is a very hilly city. That being said, there is a bus that you can easily take to the school. Taxis are very reasonable and secure and are another way to arrive at the school."
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
"There are many cultural opportunities in Guanajuato. You can always find theatre and musical events or just walk around the city center and take in the ambiance of a university town. You must visit El Pipila (accessible with funicular or walking) and the original silver mine concession."

"I have been to several Spanish language schools in Mexico and Spain and this was a great experience."
City/place
"Guanajuato is an authentic Mexican city and is not overwhelmed with tourists. The staff in shops and restaurants are friendly and willing to let you try your Spanish. We also found a Spanish/English language exchange that meets in different bars or restaurants several evenings a week and had a great time joining them."
Quality of teaching / language progress
"You learn fascinating things about the history and culture of the region while improving your Spanish."
Accommodation
"I loved my homestay experience! The host is a lovely woman and an excellent cook. Every meal was delicious and beautifully presented. She sat with us during meals for conversation. She even invited us to join her and some family and friends for a a meal, which was a memorable experience. Her home is spacious and very close to the University of Guanajuato, so there are restaurants, shops, and museums within easy walking distance."

"Its location in the center of Guanajuato and it was also one part of its weakness. I had asked many, many times, a host family in a house where there were not too many stairs. I thought I would die every day climbing the heights of the city, especially with a heart condition. It would have been very interesting if the school could have given a plan of the public transportation system."

Positive aspects of school
"The location was ideal to get to know the city of Guanajuato and to be a part of its daily life. The instructors were great at sparking conversation and asking questions to keep us talking. They spoke slowly and clearly without seeming to try to make it easier for us. They were interested and interesting. The whole experience was wonderful."
Negative aspects
"No orientation or introduction to the city. Instructors let many errors (grammar & punctuation) slide without correction. I know they wanted us to keep talking and not disturb our chain of thought too much, but we got sloppy and missed opportunities for learning. Classroom management was a bit weak at times:I was in several classes with only one other student, which was fantastic, but my fellow student dominated the time in some conversation classes I got thoroughly bored & frustrated … until I added private classes instead."
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
"Take chances with the language and speak to people in shops and on the street. That’s where you really shed inhibitions. And 24-hour immersion really makes a difference."

"The director and instructors were all very interested in helping us thrive and in learning about our environments even as they taught us about history, culture, legends, and literature of Mexico. I am Very glad I was at Plateros."
City/place
"I compared it to Disneyland, where every day was perfect, all of the people were patient and friendly, and there was always something going on."
Quality of teaching / language progress
"The 35Plus was described as a 7-hour combination of small group and 1on1 classes, but that was not actually the case. It was an excellent program, well worth the price, but I would recommend that one sign up for 5-6 classes and clearly request/include a private class or two to concentrate on applied grammar instruction each day … if one is serious about learning (and not on vacation with classes thrown in)."
Accommodation
"I would have loved a tour of the house and access to fresh air in the upper levels. I did have full access to the first level, except the kitchen, so I spent all of the time I could outside among the people. That was actually quite satisfying and interesting, but it still felt odd. The host prepared breakfast and supper carefully and consistently, with good food, except it felt like living in a hotel. The host was excellent at reinforcing language learning by conversing freely and correcting grammar, which I thoroughly appreciated … that was why I was there, after all."

Positive aspects of school
"Too many positive aspects! The teachers were talented, helpful, interesting and friendly! The classes were fun and relevant- never boring or long. I always felt engaged and was able to work on what I needed/wanted. Homework and in class exercises provided lots of practice! Lots of individual attention. I also loved the setting- so beautiful and homey. The location in El Centro is amazing too."
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
"Best coffee-Cafe Tal and Conquistador; Alongdigas Museum; Las Minas/mines in Valenciana; the churches; sopa Azteca at ‘Frieda’s on Los Postitos, fresh fruits (especially prickly pear/‘tuna’), ice cream/sorbet on the street; GTO University; Don Quixote Museum; Estacion Gelato I also recommend contacting an ecotour company called Cacomixtle (cacomixtle.com). They are very affordable and offer urban walking & food tours, hiking trips, mountain biking etc. My guide Susana spoke English but was willing to help me practice Spanish. She was also super interesting and knowledgeable!"

"Teachers, lessons, classes & homework exercises were all amazing! I feel like I learned a lot in a short time. Class material was very interesting and relevant! Lots of historical and cultural information too. I also enjoyed meeting the other students too. The school is super cute and comfortable! The location in El Centro was very convenient too. I wish that there would have been more social opportunities, but summer might be a hard time for that."
Accommodation
"I loved staying with Maria & her family! My room was comfortable and private. I had my own bathroom too! The food(breakfast and lunch) was delicious and healthy! The family was so kind & helpful! I also had a lot of opportunity to practice Spanish! I think that staying with a local family is an essential part of this experience!"

Positive aspects of school
"The level of instruction was absolutely superb. I enjoyed and I mean enjoyed, three hours of grammar review and two hours of history, Mexican politics, Mexican psychology and much more. Most of the instructors that I knew were very cultured, well educated people on a level that you would find anywhere else in the world."
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
"As anywhere in Mexico, you literally need to watch your step. That means that you could easily trip over things, fall off ledges, and incur minor injuries. Europeans and North Americans would likely not find hand railings where one would expect but all you have to do is pay attention. Do not wander around on auto pilot and besides, you might miss interesting linguistic and cultural phenomena."

"Lessons concentrate too much on grammar and reading/writing and no enough on speaking fluency and pronunciation. Teachers speak too fast using vocabulary and tenses that were never taught, and if students do not understand, they simply say it in English, rather that repeating it slower or writing it on the board. Very frustrating."

"I'm not one to give 5 stars, so I won't. But if I did, these people would get it. The school had wonderful educators, all of whom were well prepared and knowledgeable. I was a student for 5 weeks and was pleasantly surprised at how they were able to accommodate my needs, as well as keep the classes relevant and continually progressing thorough out the whole 5 weeks. My past schooling has been repetitive, due to the large number of short time students and the need to begin again every week. I would, and will, recommend this school for anyone wanting a solid educational and cultural experience. Cheers to everyone there."
