- It's great to have a list of activities specifically for juniors. Catering to this age group requires a mix of educational, active, and fun experiences. Here is a list of activities in Newcastle that would be perfect for a younger student group, with a mix of paid and free options.
Unpaid/Low-Cost Activities:
Museums and Galleries:
Discovery Museum: This free museum is fantastic for juniors with its hands-on exhibits about Newcastle's history, science, and technology. The Turbinia (a famous steam-powered ship) is a huge hit.
Great North Museum: Hancock: Another free museum with a focus on natural history and world cultures. Juniors will love the dinosaur skeleton, the Ancient Egypt gallery, and the live animal exhibits.
Laing Art Gallery: While a visit to an art gallery might not seem exciting to juniors, the Laing often has specific family-friendly exhibits and workshops that are designed to be engaging and interactive.
Outdoor Fun:
Exhibition Park: A large park with a lake, playground, and plenty of space for games and picnics. It's a great spot for a casual afternoon of running around and playing.
Jesmond Dene: This is a beautiful, sprawling park with a stream, waterfall, and woodland areas. It also has a pets' corner with farm animals, which is a big draw for younger children.
Ouseburn Farm: A community-led farm in the heart of the city's Ouseburn Valley. It's free to enter and a great way for juniors to get up close with animals like pigs, sheep, and chickens.
Learning and Creativity:
Newcastle City Library: The library often hosts free children's events, from storytelling sessions to craft workshops.
Seven Stories, The National Centre for Children's Books: This is a truly unique place dedicated to children's literature. It has interactive exhibits and workshops with a focus on storytelling, illustration, and creativity. While it's a paid activity, it's very much a "must-do" for juniors.
