Student Opinions About Studying in Amherst

“I’ve been a student at UMass for the last 7 months, and my advice to everyone would be to make sure you sign up for some clubs or societies on campus, because they’re generally very well organised and are a wonderful way of making new connections and friendships.”

“Downtown Amherst is really the best place to be if you want to be around other students, and have access to all the best dining and nightlife options. In case you ever run out of things to do, you can always hop on the Peter Pan Bus and go to Boston for a day out.”

“While Amherst is a small town, it really has a way of making you feel like you’re in a cosmopolitan city. I came here to study at UMass, and its campus is so extensive and well designed that it wouldn’t look out of place in a major city.”

Amherst Key Facts for International Students

PROS

  • The public transport in Amherst is generally considered one of the town’s greatest strengths, with good bus coverage with varied routes, and significant discounts for students and residents.

  • Outdoor activities are a popular choice in Amherst. Among some of the options around are Mount Holyoke Range State Park, Metacomet-Monadnock Trail, and Puffer’s Pond.

  • Many of the residents consider Amherst a college town, since a significant portion of the population is there for educational reasons, and much of both local business and activities are marketed toward this young demographic. In Amherst there is certainly a vibrant party scene for students to enjoy.

CONS

  • Since Amherst is located in the New England state of Massachusetts, winters in Amherst are typically very challenging. Newcomers to Amherst can expect temperatures as low as minus 11 degrees celsius, and also very short daylight hours, which can negatively impact the residents’ social lives if you don’t prepare for it.

  • Massachusetts is not well known for being affordable when it comes to housing costs, and sadly Amherst is no exception. For just a 2-bedroom apartment the average cost is somewhere in the region of $2,300. It is worth noting that the average rental price for a 3-bedroom apartment in Amherst is just $100 more, so this may be the wiser option if you’re planning on sharing an apartment with roommates.
