Austin, the capital of the state of Texas, is not the biggest city in Texas but it may very well be the coolest; it is included in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. The city motto is “Keep Austin Weird” and you’ll see it everywhere: on T-shirts, car bumpers, store windows... It is known well beyond state boundaries for its incredibly diverse music and arts scene and attracts people from all over. The locals have a reputation as open and friendly, making Austin an easy place for international students to settle in.

Weather in Austin can be very hot in summer but there are many parks, public pools and swimming holes around to help residents keep cool. Lady Bird Lake on the Colorado River has lots of recreational water sports on the go. There are different trails around the city for hiking or biking where, along the way, you can occasionally find a water hole for a quick swim.

Austin is spread out over a fairly large area, so students will probably need some type of personal transportation. It is a fabulous place to be a student and when your studies are done, it also has a strong economy and a job market that only continues to grow.

Student Opinions About Studying in Austin

“Me and my family moved here a couple of years ago and it’s been one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. The only downside for me is that if you’re moving in from another state, and especially California, some people aren’t happy to see that you’re moving in. It’s nothing too much to worry about, and this attitude is generally less pronounced towards foreign newcomers.”

“Unless you’re living in one of the few places that is linked up perfectly with Austin’s public transport, you’re almost definitely going to need access to a car if you want a good quality of life here.”

“I’ve never lived somewhere where the people are as happy and friendly as they are in Texas. Me and the other students I hang out with agree that you make friends almost by accident here, because the social norm is for strangers to speak to each other.”

Austin Key Facts for International Students

PROS

  • Austin is a place that has a great reputation for its relationship with live music, being home to a number of festivals which attract both artists and audiences from around the world. Some examples include, the Austin City Limits Music Festival, JMBYLA Austin, and Levitation Music Festival.

  • The job market for the tech scene in Austin is especially active and stable, with job opportunities most commonly coming from the likes of Facebook, LinkedIn, Amazon, Tesla, and many other important employers are setting themselves up in Austin, so you can be sure that with some persistence you’ll be able to land a job.

  • A college town, and that’s great for students as it generates more events, and fun activities to take part in generally.

CONS

  • The public transport in Austin is known for not being the most reliable service when used outside of the city center. Those who use the bus service closer to the center will find its routes and bus frequency to be enough for their needs. When looking at where to live, newcomers should keep this factor in mind.

  • Even long-term residents express that the summers in Austin are brutally hot, and have the effect of making the majority of people want to stay indoors making use of the air conditioner.

  • Austin’s average rental prices for apartments are higher than the national average, at approximately $1,545 for a 2-bedroom apartment. That said, this is just the average which means more affordable apartments can be found by looking in neighborhoods outside of the center.
