Dallas, Texas, is a city that more and more people are moving to in recent years, and it should come as no surprise. There are several HEIs to choose from in Dallas and even more in the surrounding area, so students have a lot of options. Housing prices are expected to rise in the coming years due to the sheer number of people moving to this vibrant city, so it might be recommendable not to hesitate too long before making your move!

Outside of school time, students can't possibly get bored. Aside from the excellent cuisine to discover (if you like BBQ, Mexican and/or Tex-Mex, you are in for a treat), Dallas has museums of all sorts, a huge collection of parks with a total of 17 lakes, nature preserves, biking/jogging trails and multiple music venues. Sports are a big deal in Dallas, and in Texas in general, so if you too are a sports fan, Dallas could be a great place for you.

Student Opinions About Studying in Dallas

“I absolutely love Dallas, it’s always got plenty of job opportunities going, and there’s so much to do in terms of museums, attractions and nightlife. It’s a major city with that southern charm which makes it so special.”

“In Dallas you should make peace with the fact that you’re going to end up driving to get where you need to be, but the city compensates you by providing so much to do in your free time.”

“There are so many web developer and tech-related jobs coming up in Dallas all the time, you can’t really fail to land a job if this is your area of expertise.”

Dallas Key Facts for International Students

PROS

  • Between 2017 and 2018 Kiplinger ranked Dallas as being among the best cities in the United States for growth in the job market, and this continues to be the case today. Dallas is a giant city, with important companies like JCPenny, AT&T, Southwest Airlines, and ExxonMobil, hiring considerable numbers of workers in the city.

  • Dallas is well known as a very diverse city, with many U.S citizens having moved in from other states, but there’s also a considerable international population who move here for the great job opportunities.

  • This is a city known for its innumerable attractions and activities. Dallas offers plenty of museums (some free and others with a small entrance fee), botanical gardens, indoor water parks, and even a LEGOLAND discovery center for the big kids among us.

CONS

  • The tendency for so many people to move to Dallas in recent years has driven up the prices for rent. The average rate for a 2-bedroom apartment is around $1,730. It’s not an impossible figure to pay if sharing with a roommate, but it will likely leave less disposable income available for certain activities.

  • Dallas is not a viable city for getting around on foot, and the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) service is not the most efficient way of commuting, according to longtime residents. You can use it, but expect to be making a lot of transfers. A car is more practical, but then you will have to experience Dallas’ infamous traffic congestion. It’s just the nature of living in Dallas, unfortunately.

  • Newcomers to Dallas should make an effort to educate themselves on which roads use toll charges and which don’t. Dallas residents warn that toll charge costs can seriously add up if you don’t plan well.
