Dubuque, Iowa is on the Mississippi River, where the states of Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin meet. It has long been the main industrial and commercial centre for the region and it actually has what could be considered a commercial port where most of the industry was located. The Port of Dubuque now is a meeting place for locals and visitors alike, with a casino, a hotel and indoor water park, a convention centre, a museum and aquarium, and a riverwalk. In summer it also hosts several of the annual festivals organised by the town.

One of the favourite attractions in town is the Fenelon Place Elevator, a.k.a. the Fourth Street Elevator, which is not an elevator at all. It’s a small funicular train which carries passengers to the top of the bluff to enjoy the view. From the observation decks above you can see all three states.

Student Opinions About Studying in Dubuque

“Dubuque has entertainment and events the whole year through, though there’s not as much happening outdoors in winter; it gets really cold. I spend a lot of my time walking in the city’s well maintained parks with my dog, and I always come home in a good mood afterwards. Part of the charm here is that people haven’t forgotten how to say hello to strangers. I really appreciate that.”

“It’s a good place to live in general, with a lot of history and beautiful natural sights. There’s a sense of community that’s hard to find in larger cities, but for an international student like myself, it lacks diversity.”

“There are a lot of unique locations to discover in Dubuque. Some of my favourites are the river walk, the Mines of Spain State Recreation Area and the Julien monument. The locals are approachable, and I’ve never had any negative experiences where I’ve felt in danger, even at night. I’d recommend Dubuque to any student wanting to live in a city, without living in a huge metropolis.”
