Springfield, Missouri, nicknamed the Queen City of the Ozarks, is a city known for its highly affordable cost of living and great rent prices, as well as their signature dishes of Pineapple Whip, and Cashew Chicken.
Known as a college city, domestic and international students come from afar to enroll in one of Springfield’s 10 universities, and many do so with the idea of working part-time alongside their studies. Springfield’s dynamic job market makes that a definite possibility.

Student Opinions About Studying in Springfield
“There’s sadly a lot of crime that goes on in Springfield, but it hits some areas much worse than others. Rountree, where I live, is very safe in general and it’s also right next to Missouri State University, which minimises my commute.”
“Springfield is a good place to live especially if you’re just starting out in the world of work, because the apartment rental prices here are great, and your hard-earned money gets you a better place to live. You can end up living in a very comfortable and spacious apartment for surprisingly little money.”
“As an international student I would recommend Missouri State University or Drury University, because they have the highest enrolments of international students, and it makes it easier to get started creating a social circle here in Springfield, and not feeling like you’re standing out.”
Springfield Key Facts for International Students
PROS
-
Springfield has some of the most affordable apartments for rent in the United States, with the average for a 2-bedroom apartment coming to around $795. This is a reasonable price by itself, but it’s perfectly possible to find even more affordable prices, especially when sharing with a roommate.
-
The city generally has a lot of entry-level, tech-related jobs available that could be useful for applicants looking for full or part-time work. Companies like call centers and internet providers are recommended as a good place to start your job hunt in Springfield.
-
Springfield is known as a college city for the large number of universities located here. The Downtown frequently hosts affordable and appealing events for young students. The city also has aquariums, parks, museums and caves located close to the Ozark lakes and rivers.
CONS
-
Unfortunately, Springfield has issues with elevated violent and property crime rates, especially in the northern zone of the city. Newcomers are recommended to take precautions with this, but a great first step would be choosing the safer neighbourhoods to look for your apartment in, for example Rountree or Emerald Park, among others.
-
Many agree that having access to a car is necessary for getting around Springfield, as the public transport is not very dependable here. This will also be a safer means of transport than having to wait on buses, due to the crime rates.
-
The weather here is unpredictable, and regularly afflicts Springfield with various kinds of storms.
