Student Opinions About Studying in St. Louis

“For me the best thing about living in St. Louis is how affordable it is here. You don’t have to spend most of your paycheck just to keep a roof over your head, so that means there’s plenty of cash left over for spending on things you do for fun. That said, the city offers a lot of events and activities for free such as their museums.”

“Between aquariums, museums, concerts, shopping areas, and great nightlife options, I’m never stuck for things to do in St. Louis. I’ve lived here for around 6 years now and the city is still surprising me with its constant events that it puts on in the months between Spring and Fall.”

“St. Louis isn’t as glamorous or enticing as some other major cities in the country, like New York City, but it’s a place where people with normal jobs can enjoy a high standard of life after monthly expenses. It can even be a great place to launch your start-up, if that’s on your radar after graduation.”

St. Louis Key Facts for International Students

PROS

  • One of the things St. Louis is known for is its apartment rental prices. The average for a 2-bedroom apartment in St. Louis is $1,275, which becomes even more affordable when sharing the apartment with a roommate.

  • St. Louis hosts free festivals almost every weekend from Spring to Fall, these are sure to appeal to a wide variety of tastes. Between that and the history and art museums that allow you in free of charge, you’ll always have something to do here.

  • International students tend to agree that St. Louis is a place with friendly and welcoming locals, and they don’t feel that they are treated differently because of where they’re from.

CONS

  • Public transport is not very practical or dependable here as a way of getting around in general, as the Metrolink train service only has two routes, and they don’t cover all or even most of the city.

  • Newcomers should be aware of St. Louis’ crime problem, especially relating to shootings in the City of St. Louis. It should be noted that most of the crime occurs in the City of St. Louis, which then makes the entire county seem more dangerous than it really is.
