Saint Paul is a city in Minnesota, and together with Minneapolis they are known as the Twin Cities. Famous for their active nightlife scene and tall office buildings, and freezing cold winters.

Culturally, Saint Paul creates a lot of space for music and art with their numerous venues, as well as intellectual curiosity with the museum experiences they offer.

Thanks to reasonable rental prices, those living in Saint Paul can afford to go out and treat themselves more often after a long day working or studying, which is a factor that helps with getting to know your new neighbours here.

Student Opinions About Studying in St. Paul

“I don’t really think someone should move to Saint Paul without thinking it over very practically, but with low rents and stunning nature to take advantage of, and a lot of activities to do, I would say the city has many more positives than negatives.”

“One of the best things about Saint Paul and Minnesota, in general, is how much they invest in music and art performance. The Turf Club is one of my favorite venues, because you can be seated at your table while you enjoy a show from some of Saint Paul’s local musicians, or even visiting acts.”

“As someone who doesn’t own a car, the public transport in Saint Paul really delivers. It covers all the areas of the city that most people need to go to, and it’s safe and affordable compared to that of other cities.”

St. Paul Key Facts for International Students

PROS

  • Saint Paul is known to be a haven for the arts and music scene, with the city being home to a considerable number of venues for enjoying both, like Palace Theatre, and Turf Club.

  • The average price for apartment rentals is below the national average, although not by much. Those moving to Saint Paul can expect to pay in the region of $1,348 for a furnished 2-bedroom apartment. This is a very reasonable price when shared with a roommate, and the price can be lowered even further by living outside of the more central areas.

  • Students at participating universities are entitled to a discount travel pass for MetroTransit. Residents report that the public transport system is comfortable and reliable, and that owning a car within the city limits is not necessary.

CONS

  • Many agree, even Saint Paul residents, that it’s hard to make friends with the locals as the social norm is to lead a very private life. For accelerating your social life in Saint Paul, it might be a good idea to attend social events advertised on Facebook groups or university campuses.

  • The climate here is not for the faint of heart. Winters are known to bring temperatures as low as minus 20, which can last for weeks on end. In addition to that, the daylight hours are short. These are factors which can seriously impact residents’ social lives and mental wellbeing, and should not be taken lightly.

  • Those planning on moving here may wish to apply for some jobs in advance, as a significant number of Minneapolis residents report having had challenging job hunts. Some of the best employers in the area are Xcel Energy, North Memorial Health, and Daikin Applied.
