Student opinions about A.L.C.E. Accademia Lingue e Culture Europee, Bologna

Liked
All staff at A.L.C.E were VERY open, friendly and had a lot of humour. They tried to make our stay as convenient as possible. The teachers were VERY dedicated and tried their best, to teach in a difficult setting with constantly changing class-composition (new students every beginning of the week) with students from all over the world and various "levels" of understanding and language-"mastery" within the assigned levels (A1-C1). Thanks to all of them for their constant efforts! (as a former teacher myself, I admired them greatly!).
Insider tips about what future students should not miss Absolutely go to the cooking-classes (with the amiable chef Nunzia!), to learn how to cook original "specialtà bolognese" - and if you like it, also to the wine-tasting-events. They are great fun.

Quality of teaching / language progress: Competent and dedicated teachers! Thank you ALCE.
Other comments If I had to make a choice - I'd chose A.L.C.E again. There were some minor flaws (like: some of the classrooms are more comfortably furnished than others, the breaks are a little "too short" for convenience - especially if you might want to get a coffee AND use the bathroom (queuing for both of them.... )), but language-wise I learned a lot during my stay and considering the constant change of students, the organisation within classes was surprisingly smooth.

I thought the classes were well organized and the teachers excellent. I was in school for 6 hours and had a lot of opportunity for conversation. They offered many chances to socialize with the other students and had great excursions during the week to get to know the city.

Quality of teaching / language progress: This masterclass was absolutely amazing, the extra activities planned were educational, thoroughly enjoyable, in Italian and I learned so much I did not expect. I really like the small number of us - this was very special. I rate this course very highly, but had I had a higher level of Italian language skills, I would have learned even more. Overall a great experience, one that would be very hard to beat!

Other comments The staff and teachers were very friendly and made my stay there enjoyable. I also enjoyed becoming acquainted with some of the students. The program was very structured in terms of grammatical objectives as well as content, which I think is ideal for someone coming for many weeks to really learn Italian from scratch. Because I was only there for a week and was just "refreshing" my skills, I would have liked a little more flexibility and more chance for conversation on diverse topics.

Insider tips about what future students should not miss If you want to experience the city's life, you should not come to Bologna in the beginning/mid of August. The city is deserted and many shops and restaurants are closed. On the other hand it makes it possible to explore the city in a relaxed way.

Other comments The organization of the school is fine, but one should not hope for fast replies. In regards to the assignment of the classes, eventhough they are based on a test, it can also happen, that you are placed in another course, if there are not enough students for a more fitting level. In itself the course is very worthwhile, especially because you are in Italy and you are forced to speak the language. My Italian has greatly improved there in 2 weeks.

Insider tips about what future students should not miss A very nice city, of course it is necessary to have an interest in history and architecture; it is very hot during the summer but the cities on the coast are within 1h30, 2h by train (the problem with italian trains is the same as for french trains, the delay).

Other comments A very good school and very good teachers, unfortunately I was disappointed with the host family. I was expecting a real host family with whom I can eat, live, speak as it was advertised by the school, but the person was rarely at home, so I got bored quickly. Do the right choice. However, when I changed accommodation, the other students were great and I spent a great time.

Arrival day was a mess. They did not give the keys to my driver and I had to sit on the sidewalk for over an hour until one of the other students came back and was able to let me in. There were no instructions on rooms or keys. Luckily a long term student helped me out.
