How we create the points regarding what we like/dislike about a school

Location: For those wanting a real taste of a traditional Italian city with quieter streets in the summer months and more interaction with locals then Bologna is the perfect place for you! Academya Lingue is in the inner rim of the city, near the Piazza Santo Stefano, with plenty of restaurants and bars scattered throughout the neighborhood.

Getting around: Bologna is very accessible by foot and the central Piazza Maggiore is only 5 minutes from the school and the spectacular Basilica di San Petronio is found here. There are plenty of bus stops here for those wanting to explore the city using this method to see attractions further outside the centre such as the MAMbo - Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna, which has a display of art from 1945 to present day or the Two Towers. The colours throughout Bologna interest a lot of visitors with the terracotta coloured roofs and walls painted in an array of different palettes gives the city an appeal, making for an excellent photo opportunity for strolls after class. Students wanting to explore other Italian cities such as Florence or Rome during their stay can take a train, which is arguably the best way to experience Italy, from the Bologna Central Train Station, 20 minutes from Academya Lingue.

Teaching style: The school follows a humanistic-affective method within the classroom by adopting small class sizes, no more than 8 students, to ensure specific interaction with the teacher and dedication to each student’s needs and desires when learning the Italian language.

Course structure: The course content is designed around the cognitive-communicative method which intertwines the basics of the language with the culture of the area and through this interaction embeds the Italian language within the student’s mind to use for the foreseeable future. Academya Lingue offers group classes as a standard course or a combination course and there is a senior course which takes into consideration the different teaching styles that may be needed for these students and reduces the class size to a maximum of 6 students to provide a safe learning environment. The school offers individual package programmes as well as specific private classes in a CILS Exam Preparation Course and a Business Course.

Social programme: Available for students to attend are after school activities to sample local life and culture as well as being a great tool to interact with fellow students and practise your Italian in Bolgna.

School facilities: The school has excellent facilities for students including a cafeteria, a library, free after class access to language learning software and wifi.
  • The language school Academya Lingue was founded in Bologna, Italy in 2014.
  • Legal name / parent company: Academya Lingue s.r.l.

Student opinions about Academya Lingue, Bologna

Liked
Great school! I took a class for three months, came to the school with almost no knowledge, and after a couple of months I could easily communicate in Italian on almost any topic! I also liked the program of the school, which helped me communicate and get to know a lot of interesting people from different countries. The teachers were always very positive, especially the school director! Every morning at this school started for me with a smile and a good mood! In the end, I even regretted that I took the course for only three months and not longer.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss If anyone is worried about the visa - I got it without much trouble, do not worry. Before arrival, it is better to withdraw some cash to be able to take a cab from the airport to the city and immediately buy a SIM card on the way (I took iliad, there was relatively cheap internet). For food delivery it is better to download the app glovo or just eat before the flight.

Roberto, a teacher, explained things very well. He spoke clearly and distinctly and used the blackboard effectively to get his point across. I’ve taken many language courses (Spanish, German, Italian and French) throughout the world. Roberto was one of the best teachers I have ever had. Andrea, the manager, was always upbeat. It was a joy to go there every morning. Donatella was also very good.
Disliked
The other two women teachers I had were okay—but they didn’t use the blackboard enough and sometimes they didn’t enunciate their words clearly. Students who do not live in Italy are not so accustomed to hearing spoken Italian. So I think it is important for the instructors to speak a little more slowly, a little louder and more distinctly for the benefit of the students.

I liked the small classes, the opportunity to change classes if the level was not right, the possibility of coming intermittently - the overall flexibility of the attendance. The teachers were young, vibrant and skilled. The Directore is kind and helpful. The location is in the centre of the old town. The classrooms are bright and airy.
Disliked
I would have appreciated some more cultural content in the lessons, but maybe my level was too low.

Wonderful school in the centre of the old town with a very warm, open atmosphere. The teachers were very committed and ensured that the lessons were varied and entertaining. There was also an afternoon programme every day (Mon-Fri), such as a visit to a church or museum or a half-day excursion to another city.

Mainly young teaching staff, very friendly, motivated, helpful. Good atmosphere in the beautifully renovated traditional building with a beautiful courtyard. As of now, there is additional school space. In case of concerns and wishes (e.g. change of class), one could always turn to the headmaster.
Disliked
Exact programme of afternoon activities sometimes announced at rather short notice. I think that was also difficult because the students are always different: Number, length of stay, level..... At another school in Italy, there were also evening programmes: concert, theatre, dinner together.....

It is everything the Director, Andrea, promises in his video. The teaching is outstanding, the facilities and location excellent and it is so friendly. I look forward to my next visit.
Disliked
It was difficult at first to identify the class I was best suited to. I think a few minutes assessing my skills (or lack of them!) would have been really useful before placing me in a class but knowing the turnover of students on a Monday, I can see why this is not really viable. I found the right level in week 2.

I believe that it would be helpful to ask each student what they hoped to gain/achieve/ learn over the course of their instruction. I received no briefing or questioned about what I hoped to gain during my two weeks. I was added to a class of two who had been already studying at the Academya for 3-4 weeks. I was happily accepted into the class but it took me a while to catch up/turn in. Staying with a family so that I was more immersed in Italian would have helped me… not the Academya’s fault.

What I missed as a German was the structure. I also have to say one thing. Language can also be learnt without structure. A simple example of this is how children learn. They don't need that. They have confidence and it works. But there is no structure in other cultures either. Accordingly, this is more of a German-language phenomenon.

Quality of teaching / language progress: I did a month of classes. The classes were small and the teachers very good and very nice. It is a small school and the students get to know the teachers and the other students very well because of all the activities. You also get to speak Italian all day, so you improve your Italian faster.

Quality of teaching / language progress: Use of a standard text book was something I expected but was not forthcoming. Lessons were enjoyable but at times seemed random. Advance notice of what would be taught during the following week of lessons would be have been enormously valuable for me.
Other comments Seems to cater to a specific market. Be sure it’s right for you. In general I liked it.

Questions and answers about Academya Lingue

  • This is certainly a great option for those who want to learn more about Italian culture and daily life, and have more opportunities for conversation after class. With host families, there are no specific times when students must return home.
    Gosia Mazur, LanguageCourse.Net - Nov 24, 2022
  • All courses are taught in Italian, and in rare cases, teachers may explain in other languages for beginners.

If you take 20 lessons a week, it is possible to reach B2 level in 7-8 months as a beginner, but this depends on the effort the students put in and the school cannot guarantee this.
    Susan Wang, LanguageCourse.Net - Dec 05, 2022
  • You will receive a link with the booking confirmation, which you can use to fill out your level test. On the first day of school there will be a brief verbal classification and then you will be assigned to a suitable class. The Academya Lingue also starts every Monday with complete beginner courses if your level is not that good. So you are completely flexible and you could even start from scratch if you prefer.
    Sabine Krafack, LanguageCourse.Net - Dec 22, 2022
