The main goal of International House’s General English course is to enable you to have confidence when you’re out and about in the real world using English, across as wide a variety of situations as possible. This course is particularly popular with those who are staying in Malta for holiday purposes and would like to improve their level during their stay. Even so, the General course would be appropriate for learners in almost any kind of situation and is not specialised in any particular direction.
In addition to all of the grammar and vocabulary study that you will be undertaking, International House also believes that you learn best by producing language yourself in a communicative context. For this reason, you will also be exposed to a range of activities related to role plays, debates, and free speaking. Something missing from many English courses is preparation for comprehending different accents within the same language, but this is also covered in the programme - contributing to your general preparedness when using English.
General English courses are designed to give you the communicative confidence and competence to deal with everyday situations in English. This is the perfect choice if you want to learn English in Malta, combining your language course with a relaxing, fun-filled holiday. In your lessons, you will learn conversational skills, grammar structures and vocabulary, enabling you to communicate effectively in various social situations using the English language.

In the last few years, IH Malta has noticed a change in student’s needs. As the world has become more globalised people are finding that they increasingly need English for their work. In this situation, a general English course will not necessarily provide the specific language required by the student. This is why the school has started to offer English for Specific Purposes in groups.
On these courses, students can focus on the vocabulary and grammar needed to enable the them to effectively complete professional activities in English. IH Malta offers a full range of specialist classes including business English, medical English, legal English and English for hospitality and tourism where the students will be matched with a teacher who is a specialist in the field.
The ESP group course consists of four specialist integrated skills classes where students are placed in groups with other students from similar professions. Classes cover reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, and vocabulary. Students will improve their accuracy (how correct their English is) and fluency (how well they can communicate). The advantage of learning in groups is that the language learnt can be practiced in realistic role plays, case studies, discussions, presentations and simulation activities. In this way, English is learnt by using English not just by listening to grammar lectures and doing worksheets allowing students to achieve true communicative competence in their chosen field.

This course prepares students for the TOEFL exam. It includes 20 group general English lessons and 10 individual exam preparation lessons per week.
With this course, the general English course is supplemented with two daily one-to-one lessons to prepare students for the TOEFL exam.
The General English course consists of four integrated skills classes where students are placed in groups with other students of the same level. Classes cover reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, and vocabulary. Students will improve their accuracy (how correct their English is) and fluency (how well they can communicate). Lessons have daily and weekly objectives and use the Communicative Approach, so English is learnt by using English not just by listening to grammar lectures and doing worksheets. The main focus of these classes is on developing the student’s communicative competence via conversation, debates, presentations etc.
Having worked on improving their English skills, grammatical range and accuracy and lexical resource in the general English lessons in the exam preparation class students will focus on how to successfully complete the various tasks required for the specific exam that they will be taking. The primary focus of the course will be on familiarising students with the exam format and learning strategies and skills for approaching the various question types. They will also learn vocabulary and grammar necessary to complete these tasks coupled with practice using past papers and feedback from experienced exam preparation teachers.
The advantage of choosing one-to-one over group classes for exam preparation is that the student can choose to focus on a particular area that they feel they need to work on, so this is ideal for students who have previously taken the exam and not received their desired grade. However, it can also work for novice students as they will be asked to complete a mock exam and based on their results the teacher can tailor make them a personalised course.

With this course, the general English course is supplemented with two daily one-to-one lessons to prepare students for the IELTS exam.
