“Having the opportunity to study Japanese in Japan for 3 months at a low price and with many cultural experiences attached is the greatest strength, combined with the helpfulness of the staff and teachers. In addition, I met so many valuable people.”
“I had booked the summer course with activities that had already been paid for, but I was not told that at a certain point they would be repeated in a circle. I was told to participate twice even though I had already done the activity and had other plans for that day. I should have been warned earlier. But it was a slight slight that only happened once.”
Insider tip: “Choose well where to live, spend more on a private flat”

“JaLS was the best Japanese language school I have attended so far. Teachers are excellent, teaching is well structured, and class sizes small. The private lessons helped a lot to address my weaknesses. All students in my class were at my level. All was in Japanese, which greatly helped me to improve my communication skills. There were many interesting and enjoyable activities/excursions, so I made many new contacts. JaLS staff was very friendly and supportive.”
“My only criticism is the small size of the classrooms, which, however, is the downside of having many small classes.”

“Most everything, the infrastructure and the location are great! I also appreciated the flexibility when it came to last minute changes.”
“I think the pace is too fast, there is not enough time to digest the new information or even integrate the new learnings in real conversations. I think a slower pace and a better balance between grammar and conversation would improve learning results. Often the questions of students are not understood and remain unresolved. Most of the times this was due to the lack of knowledge in other languages. In my opinion the best language teachers have been language students before, thus they understand where students struggle. (I don’t mean "translating" concepts or words, immersion is the best way to learn!). I also think a new approach could be used taking in consideration what is the goal of each student. Is it to communicate and travel, then more emphasis should be given to that language. Is the goal to study or work in Japan, a different language will be needed. Often, I had to learn vocabulary I know I will never use in my life... so I didn’t every try to learn/remember those. It´s about managing resources (time and energy)”

Other comments: Very good school. You make friends very quickly. The cultural activities are sometimes a bit expensive for what you get on offer. And sometimes certain activities are badly organized (especially the free activities). But all in all, I had a great time at school.

"I lived with a very friendly host family. They were obviously used to foreign students, so despite me still being on an intermediate level, we could communicate well in Japanese. The host family’s mother took great care in regards to my dietary restrictions (allergies) and food was always excellent (I gained weight). I enjoyed walking every day to the school; by public transport it would have been shorter. The room was simple and clean. The host family’s mother even did the laundry! We became good friends and I hope to be back and be able to stay with them again.

"I absolutely loved my host family. She is the most lovely, smart, and caring person I met (and most Japanese are very nice and friendly!) She cooked for me every day (very delicious!) and packed a Bento box when I didn’t have time to have breakfast. She even took me and my fellow student to a restaurant a few times. She did the laundry and was very helpful with everything. We are still in touch via Email. She was for sure a highlight during my stay. When I arrived, the room was not very cosy, but I made some changes and I think it looks lovely now. :-)
