What we like about the school
  • Great location, just a few minutes’ walk from the beautiful La Concha beach.
  • Best rated school in San Sebastian
  • Free assistance in finding flats for long-term students.
  • You can combine courses at different schools of the same chain and the school will charge the inscription fee only once.
What we dislike about the school
  • Average age of students is a bit higher than at most schools. Great for students 25 years or older.

Location: El Aula Azul does not only occupy one of the most iconic buildings in town but is also attractively placed within walking distance from La Concha beach. The unbeatable sunsets of San Sebastián is where many students have found themselves not only falling in love with the Spanish language but also with the rich Spanish culture of this coastal town. The school finds itself in the heart of the city and makes it possible for students to discover and explore quaint little shops, bars, restaurants and places of cultural interest on foot.

Accreditations: El Aula Azul is an official SIELE examinator centre and has been accredited by numerous quality control associations.

Course structure: Expect to find a modern space with five spacious, fully-equipped classrooms designated for a variety of courses that include intensive, extensive and semi-extensive lessons; as well as private, group and senior class options.

School facilities: The school itself makes it easy for students to make the most of their studying experience with a free library and the use of computers. Furthermore, El Aula Azul maintains both junior and family programs throughout the academic year.

Activity courses: For those who wish to combine their studies with more outdoor activities, the school also offers up to 4 courses that combine horse riding, cultural studies, music and surfing.

“The coordinators, teachers, and receptionists—everyone truly cared about me, and I had such enjoyable days. The lessons, in particular, were always explained carefully so that even I, as a beginner, could understand. The hour-and-a-half classes never felt like a struggle.”
“I think it would have been great if the school had offered a dedicated study space for students to use.”
Insider tip: “If you can achieve even a basic level of speaking ability beforehand, you will find the classes much easier to follow, and the pace at which you absorb the material will be significantly faster.”
Details of the review
Quality of teaching / language progress: Personally, I felt the course might have been a bit too high-level for me. I think I might have benefited more from a course that placed a stronger emphasis on conversation and was slightly lower in level.Other comments: My best advice is to ask questions about anything and everything! Don't hesitate to ask the reception staff, as they are always open and willing to help with any questions you have.

“I had 7 weeks of individual lessons and really learned a lot. In my opinion, a special feature and strength of the school is that it places a lot of emphasis on conversation. That's exactly what I wanted! The methodology and didactics used were exactly right for me.
Conclusion: it couldn't have been better! A few words of Spanish turned into the ability to hold a conversation for about an hour
can. I am also now able to read easy books in Spanish.

Many thanks to our new employees and employees!!!

And - I learned to learn again, which is no longer so easy at my age.”

All around amazing experience. Wish I could have stayed longer.”

“I was there for 4 weeks and really loved my experience at Aula Azul and would definitely recommend it to others. All the teachers were fantastic and staff were super lovely. Lessons were fun and interesting and covered a range of themed topics, vocabulary, grammar and I learned a lot and got lots of speaking practise in the classes which I liked. I also recommend the private classes too as it's good to work on specific things you need more practise with and get more one on one support and speaking practice. They organised lots of activities; Sidraria in the old town, Queseria visit in the country, pinxos, language exchanges while I was there in August so it was great to meet other students and I met lots of really nice and interesting people from around the world of all ages. I wasn't sure if there would be other 30-somethings there but was presently surprised by how many were there at the same time so that was a nice surprise too. Location was amazing, very central and a couple minutes walk to the main beach. Perfect for an after class dip. They even gave me the opportunity to do an exam in the middle of my course to test my level across different areas and get feedback on the things I could improve which was very helpful.”

“Loved the teachers and teaching, location of the school was awesome, many classmates also paired their classes with surf in the afternoon and it seemed like an awesome time! Also recommend the private classes, they’re like a conversation that evolves with your level, although they are, of course, pretty tiring for the brain.”

“I liked the teachers and staff at the school best because they were all very nice and also very competent. I learned an incredible amount during my three weeks at the school, which was mainly due to my teacher, with whom I had a private lesson every day. In general, the teaching methods were very original and animating, and the time flew by. The location was very good, it was only two streets to the beach, so it was easy to go there directly after school or during the lunch break.”
“Unfortunately, the school was not so well booked at the end of September/beginning of October and the groups were very small (usually only 2 people). As a result, there were hardly any social activities and you had little chance to get to know people. This was different at other schools in the town at the same time, but the classes were larger. All but one of the classrooms are underground, so you have neither daylight nor really good air. I wrote an exam there and sat in the basement for 3.5 hours and could hardly concentrate at the end....”
Insider tip: “As I said, I can recommend everyone to book at least some private lessons. Otherwise, there is the Intercambio every Tuesday, which is really fun and where you can use what you have learned.”

"The concept of the 'shared flat' was different from what I expected. It turned out I was essentially renting a room in a family's apartment, which initially made me wonder if it was actually a host family arrangement. However, the dynamic wasn't overly involved. Since I chose the self-catering option, I often tried to use the kitchen when the family wasn't around, leading to a somewhat delicate relationship. But when I caught a cold, they offered wonderful advice, insisting, 'This is what works best for a cough in our family.' Their advice was immediately effective, and I recovered quickly. In the end, I was deeply grateful for their warmth and hospitality.

Questions and answers about El Aula Azul

What is the school's OID number for Erasmus+?
“Our OID number is E10402433.”
Kristen, Administration from El Aula Azul, San Sebastian - Dec 03, 2025
Is it possible to book accommodation for my 6-week course?
“We only offer accommodation in a shared apartment for a maximum of 4 weeks.”
Kristen, Adminstration from El Aula Azul, San Sebastian - Sep 25, 2025
My son and I are interested in taking Spanish and surf lessons in the summer. Can the school help us with the arrangements for surf lessons?
“Yes! The school can help you and your son with the organization of surf lessons. Just let us know what dates you are interested in and we can provide you with more information.”
Ana Carolina Dos Santos, LanguageCourse.Net - May 13, 2025
Does the school have classrooms with windows and air conditioning?
“We have a classroom with windows, but they can't be opened. It's the only classroom with air conditioning.

The other classrooms are on the lower floor and we use fans when it's hot. We are by the sea and it is not usually very hot here. Most of the houses don't have air conditioning.

Most of our classrooms are quite small, but the room with the windows is our largest room, so it is reserved for our maximum number of 9 students. We cannot guarantee that his lessons will take place there as it all depends on his level and the number of students enrolled in his level.”
Kristen, Administration from El Aula Azul - Feb 17, 2025
Can I also book the Spanish and Surf course in the low season in March or only in summer?
“We require a minimum of 4 students to open a group.
So if there are not enough students to open a group between October and May, we will still offer the course at the same price, but with a shortened timetable as students are upgraded to private lessons. Your course will be arranged as follows:
- If students are taking surf lessons on their own, they will receive a 1.5 hour lesson day + 1 hour surfboard and wetsuit hire.
- If 2 people take part in the surf course, you will have 2 days of lessons totalling 2 hours per week + 1 hour of surfboard and wetsuit hire.
- If 3 people take part in the surf course, you will have 3 days of lessons or a total of 3 hours of lessons + 1 hour of surfboard and wetsuit hire.”
Kristen, Administration from El Aula Azul - Jan 15, 2025
I am from Morocco and I want to learn Spanish at Aula Azul for one year, what are the requirements to register and reserve my place with accommodation?
“To travel to Spain from Morocco for a year, you need to obtain a visa, so the first thing we recommend is that you contact the embassy.

One of the requirements to apply for a student visa for Spain from Morocco is to obtain a document accrediting your acceptance into the Aula Azul for a full-time programme leading to a degree or certificate of studies. The programme must have a minimum duration of three months and a minimum of 20 teaching hours per week, as well as accommodation in Spain, which can be in the form of a hotel reservation, a letter of invitation from a private individual, a rental contract or a sworn statement from the owner of the property where the applicant will be staying. This document will also be provided by the school.”
Rubén De Haro, LanguageCourse.Net - Jan 19, 2024
Is it possible to still stay in the apartment without doing a course?
“Unfortunately, our accommodation is only for students attending a course, so it is no longer possible to stay in the apartment.”
Silvia, Administration and Reservations from El Aula Azul - Aug 07, 2023
Is it possible to get the certificate of attendance by email after the end of the course?
“Yes, that is possible.”
Silvia, Administration from El Aula Azul, San Sebastian - Jun 06, 2023
I have a camper van so will not need accommodation. However, I will need parking space as I am travelling with my dog and, whilst she will happily stay in the van while I study, I will need to be nearby to let her out in the breaks. Are there any parking spaces within walking distance to the school?
“Unfortunately, the parking space for vans is not really close to school: it would take you some 10/15 minutes to get there by bus and another 10/15 minutes to come back to school, which would leave you without time to walk your dog.
Nevertheless, we are a dog-friendly school, so if the dog is not very big and it is a quiet dog, that will sleep and not bark if you take it to the classroom. We have already had other dogs in the classroom during the lessons.”
María Díez García, Management and Bookings from El Aula Azul - Feb 17, 2022
