Origin of : Swedish is the biggest of the North Germanic languages. The other languages are Norwegian, Danish and Icelandic. These are derived from Old Norse, which is the language spoken by the Germanic people inhabiting Scandinavia in the Viking Era. As the name suggests, the Germanic languages have similarities with modern day German, but cross-communication between Swedish and German is normally not possible. Even though the vocabulary is similar, pronunciation and grammar differ greatly.   

Regional differences: Generally Swedish is divided into 6 major dialects that can be distinguished from the Standard Swedish. All of these 6 major groups are easy to understand if you have a grasp of Standard Swedish.
