Location: Durham School of English is located in the heart of the beautiful, historical city of Durham in northeast English. Famous for its cathedral and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Durham Castle, the city is also home to England's third oldest university after Oxford and Cambridge. As a university town, Durham has a vibrant, cosmopolitan atmosphere so students can feel at ease, despite the city’s relatively small size. The castle is a short walk from the school, just across the River Wear. In the surrounding city centre there are literally hundreds of listed buildings many of which date back to medieval times.
The school: Durham School of English is a small, family-run business which opened its doors in 2018. All teachers at the school are qualified English language teachers and have several years of experience. They offer courses in General English, either Intensive or Semi-Intensive, and an intensive IELTS preparation programme.
Talking Towns: The school participates in a great programme in collaboration with local museums, clubs and independent shops to provide students with more opportunities to practise their English. Not limited to Durham, there are also affiliates in the nearby towns of Whitby and Newcastle.
Getting there: Durham School of English is less than half a mile from the Durham Railway Station; it takes about 10 minutes to walk there. There are two airports equidistant from Durham, Teeside International Airport (MME) and Newcastle International Airport (NCL). The largest of the two, and the one which has the most connections, is Newcastle. Travel time is approximately 30 minutes by car or just over an hour by train and coach.
