There is a group that corresponds with your current level of Italian, and the academy’s free placement test is intended to make sure that you are assigned to a group that will neither be too easy nor too difficult for where you are right now. The Intensive course consists of 20 lessons every week, at 45 minutes each.

You will be able to jump into the course on practically any Monday of the year unless you are an absolute beginner, in which case there are openings for new spots fortnightly.

The method of tuition uses a coursebook, and this has to be paid for separately once you are at the school. Your tuition fees cover the costs of social activities organised by your teachers for you and your group, except in cases where there are significant costs such as eating out or attending the theatre.

Student reviews about "Intensive (30)" at Dilit International House
Xenia Lara 5.0
"Pleasant group size, very friendly staff, delicious food in the cafeteria"
Karolina 3.0
"I will start with good things: location is great, facilities, office staff is very nice and helpful, activities are great but my ultimate favourite thing was ....The Bar...Food at school was amazing, very tasty and well priced. Unfortunately, I was not happy with the quality of teaching. The method they use just does not work for everyone. If you like structure and to learn basic things at the beginning, then this school is not for you! I was in A1 group, instead of teaching us basic things like: the alphabet, how to introduce yourself, how to say I, you, she, he, we, they. We were repeating some conversation without understanding the words (or even seeing the words, just repeating from listening) or repeating phone conversations. That was extremely pointless at that stage when I just want to know basic things. I would not have a conversation on the phone with anybody when I am just starting to learn Italian. But it would be nice to know how to say: ''Hi, How are you?'', '' I would like to order ....'', and '' Can I have a bill''. I spoke with few teachers about my concerns but I was just told to have a faith in the method. I paid for two weeks, lasted a week and half. In my second week I just lost all hope that they will teach me properly and I left. Also, some teachers have a bit of attitude. I had a very unpleasant incident with one teacher and that just cemented my decision to leave. If I can't even ask a question what is the point to stay? I feel I chose the wrong school and that I just wasted 2 weeks and a lot of money. Probably, I would learn more by myself by just watching videos on Youtube . P.S. I speak 3 languages so I know how it is in different schools "

On the Intensive course from Dilit, newly signed-up students receive a placement test, which is intended to make sure that every participant is placed in a group that is appropriate for their current Italian language level.

Attendance must be at least one week in duration, with a limit of 12 weeks before students have to enrol in one of the longer courses.

A wide variety of up-to-date authentic material is used in class, thus giving students valuable information about modern-day Italian culture and society at the same time as developing students’ linguistic and communicative skills. The teachers have been selected from special training courses, and they are further required to take part in teacher education seminars every month.

“Enthusiastic teachers. Location close to public transportation. Several nationalities in the class. Small class (10 students).”
“The emphasis was very much on conversation. Perhaps people thought at level B2 that you know all the grammar, but I would have liked some repetition with "rows" on the board. We didn't get a lot of "lessons" because of that. It was mainly taking text, film, interview and then trying to understand with your classmates in varying compositions.”
Details of the review
Quality of teaching / language progress: Lots of conversation among themselves, little real teaching.

“The staff (95% female) is friendly, willing and close. The method and the teachers make the classes enjoyable, and the time passes almost without realising it. It can be said that many times it is more fun than work, both for students and teachers.”
“There are days when the groups are too big for the type of activity in the classrooms, and sometimes the homogeneity in the level of the students is not balanced. The registration fee is charged even to former students if it has been more than a year since the previous one, I find it disappointing especially because the price of the school is higher than in other schools.

In a world that seeks equality, the incorporation of both sexes should be favoured.”
Insider tip: “It would be great if the inscription fee were free for former students.”

“Very motivated, friendly and helpful teaching staff. Very good working atmosphere!”
“The learning method did not quite meet my expectations. Very great emphasis on grammar, for me too little focus on practical speaking in everyday life (idioms, life situations, cultural issues, etc.).”

“The teachers are great and the vibe is very cool and informal. The school focuses quite heavily on speaking, so you will definitely lose any inhibitions about speaking.”
“Sometimes I would have liked to practise more grammar in a systematic way, e.g. ‘Today we are introducing the imperativo and this is how you do it... and these are the exceptions... and here are 20 examples to practise’.”

“I liked the café and the composition of the courses, which are made up of many different nationalities.”
“I didn't like the lessons because of the method. After ten days of Italian lessons, I am not able to form simple sentences. The grammar was taught inadequately and there were no corrections or discussions of texts. Partner work with someone who is also unfamiliar with the language is superfluous and a waste of time, and the rooms were too small and the sanitary facilities were an absolute imposition.”
Insider tip: “No suggestion.”
Details of the review
Quality of teaching / language progress: No learning success.Other comments: Change the method, discuss a topic in the morning, offer repetitions, correct written work by the teachers.

“After a disastrous start in the first two weeks, the lessons with Federica were a conciliatory conclusion. She was well prepared and structured. She responded very well to our concerns. The varied lessons were fun.”
“In my group (A1), in my opinion, far too little attention was paid to the needs of the students. We were beginners with major problems understanding the texts and although I pointed this out several times, it was not taken into consideration. The listening examples were also far too difficult for most of us. Written texts were not corrected, although this was requested. There was also no homework.”
Details of the review
Quality of teaching / language progress: The first two weeks were far too difficult for beginners, the third week was very good.

“The teachers (almost all of them are women) are very nice and concerned about each individual student. In general, the classes are enjoyable and communicative skills are acquired in a short time.”
“The worst thing about the teaching method is that there is hardly any writing, so if you have to take an exam afterwards that part is a bit weak. There are usually too many students in the classes and the chairs are not very comfortable.”

“I found a very pleasant atmosphere there. After one day I understood that you are there to learn. No stress. If you are having a hard time, no problem, you are here and take it easy. I was also at a good level. Not too difficult, but not too easy either. I am very satisfied and will try, once Dirk and Hilde's situation has been cleared up and they can come along, to come back to Dilit with them for a week in October/November 2024!”

“The atmosphere in the school is very pleasant and you feel right at home. The teachers, secretaries and cafeteria staff are super helpful and friendly. The leisure activities were especially great, very varied and you saw/learned a lot. It's also easy to make contacts quickly.”
“I liked the focus on conversation and the training of the four basic skills. However, the school's didactics and methodology are sometimes quite rigid and not very flexible. Doesn't suit every type of learner.”

“Good teachers with pleasant teaching style, in which you are maximally encouraged to speak the new language yourself. The school is located in a nice building with ample outdoor space with terraces. The 50 plus programme is great fun”
“How inconvenient that it is not communicated in advance which days there are activities. As a result, it is impossible to pre-book visits that require early booking (e.g. Vatican Museum).”
Insider tip: “The school itself has a programme (not 50+) which is interesting. Sundays are always free of activities, but if possible, try to do popular sightseeing Monday to Thursday, as it is obviously quieter in Rome then.”

Quality of teaching / language progress: Very enjoyable and recommended for everyone, both the course and the supplementary programme for 50+.Other comments: At the club you can get good coffee and lunch inexpensively

“Parlare, parlare, parlare. Finally, a course that isn't a course. A lot of speaking changes the way you use the language. Be sure to take part in the afternoon activities and aperitivo. Everyone at the school is really friendly, whether it's the teachers, the secretary, the director or the club.”

The Shared Flat accommodation for those students enrolled on the Intensive course is monitored by the school’s staff to ensure that high standards of quality are maintained. The time needed to get between these flats and your classes will be less than 30 minutes on public transport.

Your flatmates can either be fellow students from the academy, or local residents who are not associated with any classes in Dilit. Depending on the flat in question, this accommodation type houses between 2 to 6 people. You will have shared bathroom facilities and a kitchen with the basic utensils already provided, so you likely won’t feel the need to buy anything to prepare your meals. Your bed linens will be provided and changed when necessary.

Some accommodations require that an extra charge be paid to the host every day for the first 10 days of your stay - please enquire with the school for conditions.

"Very nice and kind host family! She cooked wonderfully and dinner together was always a pleasure. She cooked various specialities from all over Italy and so I also got to know Italy better from a culinary point of view. We talked a lot at dinner and I was able to practise my Italian and she was also very patient. Everything was very clean and tidy! A large room with a big and comfortable bed. I can only highly recommend the Signora!

"Meals were not inclusive (the one star does not mean the meals were bad, but actually: not applicable). Fine room, only 2 weeks with one roll of toilet paper and one set of towels per person was actually too tight.

Student reviews about Shared Flat Standard Plus
Vidal
Accommodation: 4.0
Location: 5.0
Room: 5.0
"The accommodation was fine in general, the apartment is comfortable and close to the school. It has only a small kitchen table as a common place, which makes it look more like a pension than a shared apartment, as it does not encourage communication between tenants. Worst of all, in the bathroom the toilet lid is broken, and the bathtub has no curtains or screen, causing the floor to get wet in every shower. It is very close to the school in the San Lorenzo neighbourhood, where the university atmosphere is very lively and fun.

"It does not correspond to the description of “plus” because everything in the apartment is basic and gives the impression of being neglected. It is quite far from the center and the school, but it is a quiet area.

"The location is quite good and the neighbourhood has a lot of student life and is quite cheap compared to the centre. The worst thing about the flat is the very old kitchen, but the rooms are comfortable and spacious, although the tables are a bit small for studying, and it is better to use the large kitchen table.

Questions and answers about Dilit International House

The minimum age for acceptance is 16, but my daughter is 15. Can an exception be made?
“Indeed, the minimum age for enrolment on our courses in Rome is 16 years old. However, in some exceptional cases, students under 16 years of age have been allowed to enrol if they are travelling with a family member.

It is important to note that Italian law makes significant differences for minors under 15 and 16 years of age, which particularly affects accommodation services. According to the regulations, minors must stay with a host family and comply with a number of mandatory rules, including a curfew.

Our school has a specific policy for underage students, which includes parents signing a form agreeing to the school's rules, attaching their identification documents and sending them back to the school.

It is also important to consider that, although the school welcomes many young students, classes are organised according to language level and not by age. This means that students under the age of 16 may find themselves in a group without peers of the same age, which may influence their social experience.”

I am in my 50s and would like to book a 2-week program. What is the average age of the students studying at Dilit International House, Rome in the winter?
“The average age of the students at Dilit International House in Rome throughout the year is 30 years old.”
Ana Carolina Dos Santos, LanguageCourse.Net - Dec 26, 2023
I would like to stay with a host family without any kids. Is this possible?
“When filling out the application form, you can specify your preferences about the host family. The school will then confirm if your request can be accommodated or suggest an alternative option.”
Ana Carolina Dos Santos, LanguageCourse.Net - Aug 28, 2023
Is the material included in the course price?
“The material fee is not included in the course price and will be charged separately.
Ana Carolina Dos Santos, LanguageCourse.Net - Aug 28, 2023
What are the social activities organized by the school?
“The school offers both free and paid activities. Free activities include seminars on Italian cuisine, literature, history, music, wines, and walking tours. Paid activities include excursions and wine and appetizer tastings, among other options.”
Ana Carolina Dos Santos, LanguageCourse.Net - Aug 28, 2023
Is there an airport transfer service provided by the school for transportation to the accommodation?
“The school provides airport transfers from both Roma Ciampino and Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino airports.”
Ana Carolina Dos Santos, LanguageCourse.Net - Aug 28, 2023
Is dinner in a host family always hot? And if we don't want to have dinner one day, can we get a packed lunch, for example?
“Dinner is always a warm dish, unless it’s summer and a cold dish could be preferable ”
Adriana Piva, Booking Office from Dilit International House - Jan 11, 2023
My wife cannot walk that far. 45 minutes travelling to/from the school by public transport to accommodation is therefore too much. Can the school guarantee accommodation with a host family, with no more than 30 minutes' travel time to/from the school by public transport?
“We can certainly check availability for a host family as close as possible to school and send you a proposal.”
Adriana Piva, Booking Office from Dilit International House - Jan 04, 2023
My wife cannot walk very far. Is the 50+ course suitable for her?
“Please note that the Rome for 50+ programme includes many activities where you will be walking. In particular: a half-day trip to sights around Rome, a half-day trip to the Castelli Romani area including a visit to a wine cellar, wine tasting and dinner and 2 guided tours of Rome. All these activities are on foot, so they should be aware of this, as all or some of them may not be suitable.
As the course is a package, they may also consider booking a 2-week intensive group course of 20 lessons/week (as this is also part of the Rome for 50+ programme) and booking the cultural activities separately. For some of the activities, these only need to be booked upon arrival in Rome. ”
Adriana Piva, Booking Office from Dilit International House - Jan 04, 2023
Is the Italian for 50+ course really only suitable for students with at least A2 level? Because I think I will succeed, but my wife might score lower.
“The course is preferably addressed to students with a full A2 level, who could enjoy more and have more benefits from the course, which, as mentioned, includes cultural activities, all in Italian.
However, it wouldn’t be a problem if your wife doesn’t have the level. The language component is anyway in a group course of students of different age, but according to level, so she would be anyway placed in a group of her level.
Maybe for the cultural part, you may need to help her a bit, translating. ”
Adriana Piva, Booking Office from Dilit International House - Jan 04, 2023
What is the difference between Standard and Standard Plus accommodation?
“Host Families and Shared Flats are classified into two categories: Standard and Standard Plus. Those who wish a higher level of comfort should choose Standard Plus.”
Sabine Krafack, LanguageCourse.Net - Dec 16, 2022
I am interested in learning more about the accommodations offered by the school and to know if they are available.

Are there classes on bank holidays?
“Classes are normally held Monday through Friday, unless a bank holiday falls on a weekday. The school is closed on bank holidays and weekends. The group lessons are cancelled without replacement on a bank holiday.”
Enrica , Administration from Dilit International House, Rome - Nov 23, 2022
We have two potential clients: a mother and her 9 year old daughter. They would like to do a 1 week course in October, in Rome. Would it be possible to organise private lessons for the daughter while the mother participates in a group course?
“I’m happy to inform you that we can organise the group and individual lessons for your clients, mother and daughter both in the morning.

The mother could join the general Italian classes 20 lessons per week from 9.00 to 12.20 Monday to Friday and the daughter can choose how many individual lessons to attend. ”
