Location: LTL Mandarin School is in the south of the city, in the Xuhui District. This is known for its shopping options, trendy bars, and international restaurants. The school is in the north tip of the area, the closest part to the centre of Shanghai. It is a short walk from shops, supermarkets and grocery stores.

Major attractions: The Huangpu River slices Shanghai in half. LTL Mandarin school is on the west side of the river, the same side as the Shanghai Museum, Yu Garden and The Bund waterfront area. These are all close to the city centre. Shanghai Tower and Oriental Pearl TV Tower are across the river from the school. This is in Shanghai World Financial Center, which is 9km away from the school, about 20 minutes by car.

Course structure: The school teaches Mandarin to adults. There are group courses, private lessons and programmes that include both styles. LTL Mandarin School in Shanghai also also has a course designed for students over 50 year old.

“Good and also different teachers, so that you can get something explained in different ways - flexible lesson times, also possible online in the evening - practical learning - i.e. going out for lunch together - WeChat group, practising writing and understanding.”
“Due to the distance between the school and my accommodation, I couldn't take part in the evening events. Maybe you could also organise something at lunchtime?”

“The location of the school is very central in Shanghai and the neighbourhood is very nice (French district in Shanghai). The teachers are professional and adapt well to the students' needs. Highly recommended for beginners and advanced students, also for private lessons.”
“The toilets could be more clean, classrooms are a bit small”

“Although he was a young teacher, he did his best. The management of class hours was accurate.”
Insider tip: “Since the classroom is small, the number of group lessons is at most 2-3 people. If you want a small group, this is the place for you. I was disappointed when they finally gave me a receipt for the class fee after repeated requests. Why do you want it? It was like that.

In addition, I asked the school to provide proof of attendance for my visa application, but according to the visa agency, "English certificates cannot be used for the application. Also, they do not accept a visa application for study purposes unless it is for a Chinese language school. However, there are many Westerners who have stayed at this school for a long term, so I don't know if it is really true, but I think you should be careful when applying for a visa.”
Details of the review
Other comments: Due to the small classroom, the private lessons were held in a suffocatingly small place. There was no place to relax like the lobby, and it wasn't very nice to see people gathering and eating at the entrance. Most of the students are young Westerners, and I think it's hard for people who aren't used to that kind of atmosphere. I had private lessons all in Chinese, but beginners were in English. Not recommended for beginners who cannot speak English.

Questions and answers about LTL Mandarin School

What is the difference between the Discover Beijing and the Beijing Safari programmes?
“While both programmes are study programmes, the Discover is more focused on seeing the city, while the Safari is more focused on using the language on the streets.

Keep in mind that both programmes are upgrades that require an individual programme to be booked. The Discover requires 4 private hours per day, so at least a Standard Individual course should be booked, while the Safari requires 2 private hours per day, so Small Group & Individual course can also work here, as well as the Individual only programmes.
Alexander Krasnov, Vice CEO from LTL Language School - Jul 20, 2023
Do you have special course or programme in summer?
“Yes, students can attend summer programme (7-20) or intensive language programme (15+) in summer. There are two beginner start dates in each month in June, July and August. Adult Mandarin programs are arranged all year round.”
Lisa Lebret, LanguageCourse.Net - Nov 17, 2022
