Position of school in Fukuoka: The school is to the east of the city, close to the Mikasa River. The streets around the school are quiet, but just a short walk away is a central part of the city, with an array of transportation links, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels and cafes.

Exploring the city: Genki Japanese and Culture School is right next to the Hakata transit hub. There are a large number of trains leaving from this station. Just up from the train station is a large bus terminal, with regular bus routes around the city.

Local attractions: Due to its position to Hakata transit station, the school is well positioned to explore the city. The Ohori Park and the Fukuoka Castle Ruins are 25 minutes by train or 40 minutes by bus. Kushida Shrine and Fukuoka Asian Art Museum are 20 minutes away by foot from Genki Japanese and Culture School.

Course structure: Japanese courses are possible in a group setting in a weekly structure or as a long term package. During the summer months the school has programmes for young learners that include accommodation. There are specific cthemes that you can add to a general Japanese course to make the classes more structured to your language outcome. These extras include conversational Japanese and a Cultural programme to learn more about the Japanese way of life and use of their own language.

School chain: GenkiJACS, as a group, currently has four schools in Japan, in Fukuoka, Tokyo, Nagoya and Kyoto. Since 2005, GenkiJACS has supplied quality Japanese language tuition and cultural programmes to students of all levels and many nationalities. Their initial success has seen the group expand steadily, regularly recognised by awards throughout the education sector, including being voted the Star World Language School of the year at the industry Star Awards in 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020.

“1. Classes at the academy are conducted in English, and since they teach from the basics step by step, I had no major issues even though I only knew hiragana and katakana when I arrived.

2. Thanks to the warmth and kindness of the academy teachers, the overall atmosphere is bright. Even at this early stage of learning Japanese, I could freely ask questions despite my clumsiness.

3. Beyond classes, various activities keep time flying by. (Events outside regular classes: weekly exchange meetings, cultural experiences like visiting shrines, skating with Japanese university students)

4. The lobby was freely accessible, allowing me to complete assignments even outside class hours.”
“1. The schedule was available for review the previous weekend.

2. If a class size decreases to two students, the daily schedule will consist of three class periods.”
Insider tip: “Active participation”
Details of the review
Other comments: I was happy that even teenagers learning Japanese for the first time could learn it with enthusiasm.

“The relation with the teachers, though it is expected if we take into account the price of the course.”
Insider tip: “If you want to learn fast, this is not the right place. 2 months at this school are not enough if you want to learn something (and they are not cheap). But going somewhere else to learn faster will require more dedication.
A school like this, where most students are European, is not very open to Japanese students. I have missedbeing in contact with locals. Of course this depends on your social skills.”
Details of the review
Other comments: Not everything is perfect. Some things in the organisation are hard to understand. It is a school that accepts young students so some teachers should improve their methodology. But the teachers are eager to help.

Other comments: I thoroughly enjoyed my time studying in Fukuoka. GenkiJACS helped me find great accomodation and my Japanese improved despite just being there for 3 short weeks. I can definitely say that I am more confident with Japanese conversation due to the ample practice that I had in the classes there.

“The class community was great. I didn't like the learning speed because we did too much grammar and too little conversation. The teachers should explain the grammar in English. In total it was not enough time and the pressure was too high.”
Insider tip: “Island of flowers Nokonoshima - great day trip”

Other comments: The teachers should adapt better to the class level. It would be nice learning easy phrases for daily use instead of focussing on grammar. Too specialized, not enough conversation course.

Other comments: I had such an amazing time here. The teachers, the other students and the people from Fukuoka made that possible. I met a lot of people from all over the world and a lot of Japanese people. I will definitely comeback soon, because I liked it so much and I want to speak Japanese even better.

“The teachers' energy! They were simply amazing, very nice and polite :).
I also loved the culture classes and how easy it was to make friends and such!”
Insider tip: “Yeah, be very thorough while reading a map, it is easy to get lost if you are not careful.
You should also ask for help with the way to the school and to where you live.”
Details of the review
Other comments: It was the most amazing thing I have ever experienced! A lovely school with amazing teachers and Mai-san that helped me a lot! I'm in a loss for words so the easiest way to explain my visit is that it was simply amazing (and for the younger generation: Epic and awesome!). Loved it!

“The staff is very friendly and helpful. They'll help you with anything and go out of their way to do so. Also, you get a free personal cup while you're there. You have a selection of beverages, microwave, DVD/Manga/bookselection you can rent or even keep (the books) for free. Also, you get flash cards, so you can learn all the vocab and Kanji quickly and, if your a woman, you get a personal alarm (not that it's really necessary but it's definitely reassuring).”
Insider tip: “Go around town at lunchtime to try all the delicious food (ramen, udon, ohagi, motsunabe) and just mingle with the Japanese, it's a unique experience. Don't forget to try the uncountable amount of sweets in Japan. The chocolat is quite delicious (and as a Swiss I have experience when it comes to good chocolate. ;)”
Details of the review
Other comments: You can get a language exchange partner for free, if you ask at the school or mention it when you book the course. They'll find you a suitable Japanese exchange partner, so you really get to speak as much Japanese as possible.

When students book a junior programme, can they walk around the city on their own, or do they always have to stay in a group with a supervisor?
“They can walk around the city on their own, but there is a curfew imposed by the city for minors (it is 22:00 for those under 18 years old and 23:00 for those from 18 to 19 years old) so they would need to be home by then.
