What we dislike about the school
- Younger students should consider that the average age of students at this school is significantly higher than at most other schools.
- Do not offer favorable cancellation terms in the case of a student getting a visa rejected.
Location: Centro Koinè Lucca is located in the Tuscan city of Lucca, Italy. The school is housed in the center of Lucca, within the immense city walls which were designed by Leonardo Di Vinci. There are many cafés, restaurants, shops and supermarkets close by, with several plazas and historical sites also within walking distance. Such attractions include the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, St Martin Cathedral, Guinigi Tower and the Chiesa di San Michele in Foro. Students of Centro Koiné have much to keep them busy inside and outside of the classroom. Pisa International Airport is within a 60-minute journey of the school via public transport.
Social and Cultural: A city with popular neighbouring destinations such as Pisa, Florence and Siena, Lucca offers students an authentic Tuscan experience, with much of the charm and fascination of its neighbouring cities. Centro Koiné Lucca has a varied and engaging social and cultural programme, assisting students with daily insights into the Italian way of life.
Course selection: The course selection is varied, offering something for students of all levels, via General, Intensive and vacation-friendly programmes. In addition to language & culture courses, Centro Koiné Lucca also provides Travel & Learn programmes held between the Florence and Lucca schools, Walking & Talking, Cooking with Mamma, and Teacher Refresher Courses.
Accreditations and Associations: This school is a member of ASILS (Association of Schools of Italian as a Second Language).
School chain: Koinè Center is one of the longest-established groups of schools to teach Italian language courses to foreigners, from within Italy. Their first centre opened in Florence over 40 years ago. “The teacher Lorenzo was very good at getting everyone to talk. He was also funny, so we laughed a lot during the lessons. For me, it was important to develop my everyday language, and in this respect the school's methods are good. Angela at the reception is very helpful.”
“There were not many afternoon activities. The group was too big and the level differences were sometimes troublesome. I was in the advanced group but there were several who were nowhere near that level. We were often divided into smaller groups or pairs and it was sometimes difficult for those who did not really belong at this level. This could lead to someone getting upset and it became a less good atmosphere.”

The group allocations were well thought out so that the participants were well matched to each other. Other comments: Through the afternoon activities, which were always voluntary, you got to know other participants from the school (better) and could also meet up for the evening.

“Horrible experience. They had a class with people ranging from 6 months study of Italian to 14 years study. The teachers who were disinterested focused on the high level speakers and did nothing to accommodate the lower levels. One week there were a total of 12 students in the school. So 2 were put in low beginners class and the rest were just lumped together in the other class.”

“In both weeks we had excellent teachers and very intensive lessons in a small group. The trips were also fun and very well organized. The location of the school in the old town of Lucca is unique.”
“We were a bit surprised that we got a different teacher in our second week. In the end it didn't matter because it was also very good. Nevertheless, we would have liked better planning or prior information. The furnishings in the classrooms are very spartan. The chairs with tables that can be folded down are not very functional, as you don't even know what to do with your documents. It would also make sense that instead of the individual sheets you might get a folder with a register, possibly a writing pad and a pen.”

"In Lucca, it would be good to warn people that having a breakfast isn't needed due to cafes in proximity to school. And having cooked dinners is useful and a good time to talk to host in Italian but it would be even better to have the option of say four dinner nights with host so that one could have three nights a week to have dinner out.

"The host family was exceptional, they only spoke Italian. They were very welcoming and made me feel like an old friend. They were fantastic cooks and the food was delicious. The apartment was fabulous and I had a very comfortable bedroom and my own bathroom. It was better that a 5 star hotel. I will surely return.

"I loved my location. It was a nice 20 minute walk through Lucca to school. I had a private room in an older apartment with a wonderful balcony/garden. My host were very kind and checked on things periodically. Since it was an older building, it was chilly but luckily I had warm pjs.

I travel with my husband and the idea is that he starts from 0. I have a B2 level. We would like to do a course of 2 or 3 weeks, but with a maximum of 2 hours of class per day. Our idea is to travel in the middle of June.
