Location: The school is located in the Centre Ville section of Biarritz, France, one of the most popular areas of the city and its focal point. This charming neighbourhood is home to a number of museums, the Food Halls market, sweeping boulevards, and restaurants for tapas and wine bars. Biarritz has an electric nightlife, with lots of nightclub options. Les ateliers FL Biarritz is to the southern edge of this neighbourhood, a few streets back from the beach.
Visiting the attractions: The central square of Biarritz is a 10-minute walk from Les ateliers FL Biarritz. The city is France's surfing capital and the beach is the place where this happens. The school is 10 minutes from Beach Cote des Basques, which is the prime surf beach in the region. Other city features are found in Port Vieux, which juts out from the coast. Here there are interesting rock formations, a scenic road looking over the coast, a beautiful beach and some historical monuments to explore.
Courses at Les ateliers FL Biarritz: In addition to General French programmes taught over various schedules and intensities and available to students of all levels throughout the year, Les ateliers FL Biarritz also provides Exam Preparation (DALF/DELF) and Teacher Training programmes at various times throughout the year. One-to-one and two-to-one courses are available in conjunction with or independently from any other programme.
School facilities: The school building has classrooms created for ultimate learning capabilities. After class, there is a kitchen, living room and relaxation area for students to socialise with other students at the school or enjoy their breaks in between lessons.

French language lessons are held Monday to Friday, with 20 lessons per week totaling 15 hours. Classes have up to 14 students for personalized attention, taught by experienced university-degree professors. The program attracts students from across Europe, aiming to learn French in a secure academic environment. An online test is required before arrival, followed by an oral test on Monday morning.
Surf lessons include three 1.5-hour sessions on a suitable beach, taught by a professional instructor. Groups are limited to eight students for personalized attention, and all skill levels are welcome. A swimming test is conducted before water activities. Surf equipment and nearby changing rooms with hot showers are provided.
Additionally, there are two social and cultural activities per week, including visits to Cité de l’océan, skate initiation, the Aquarium, and Basque pelota initiation.
Homestay for 15-17 year-old teens. 20 standard lessons + halfboard accommodation in shared room + 4 surf sessions + transfers. Registration fee included.

“I was in a small group of 4-5 students. This gave a lot of opportunity to practice speaking and ask questions. The lessons became really individual and personal! The teacher had her laptop connected to a projector. If we didn't know words, she didn't just translate them, but showed us the pictures and explained it that way. I thought that was great! The lessons were regularly divided into a small grammar section at the beginning, then a lot of free speaking and practising and a small game at the end.
I really liked the fact that the surf lessons were organised through the school. It was stress-free and uncomplicated. You can surf every day except Saturday/Sunday.”

“The teachers were extremely committed to both integrating everyone at their own level and promoting them individually. In this way I was able to take the exam for a better DELF/DALF certificate than I had initially strived for. The integration of digital technologies into the classroom has also made learning easier and more varied. Finally, I liked the principle that there was a lot of oral communication in class.”
“In contrast to the online courses, there were only one or two groups in face-to-face classes and thus a loose division into performance classes. Despite the efforts made by the teachers to provide us with various assignments, the conversations together were far more effective for some than for others. In one case, participation in several online courses has proven to be more successful. The change, however, was absolutely no problem. Furthermore, I understood that the school was a testing center. The bus trip to an unknown location in Bayonne did not create the atmosphere of concentration that should exist before an exam, but it was easy to manage thanks to the good public transport network.”

Quality of teaching / language progress: The face-to-face French classes were extremely sociable and didn't feel like school. The afternoon lessons of DELF/DALF exam preparation, on the other hand, were much more demanding and really exhausting at the beginning, but they also led to greater learning success.

"I would not recommend this accommodation! My mattress was very dirty, it had lots of stains and was mouldy. The flat was a smoking flat, my host mother mostly smoked on the balcony, but sometimes also in the flat (I had specified that I did not want to be accommodated in a smoking flat). This was very unpleasant for me. As an asthmatic, mould and smoking apartments are very problematic and can impair lung function in the long term. The hygiene conditions were poor; for example, the bathroom was already dirty when I arrived and three weeks later it still hadn't been cleaned. That's why I decided to take matters into my own hands and do some cleaning myself. The quality of the food was also questionable. One day, I found a completely mouldy tomato in the fridge, which contained a lot of open food.
I spoke to the school about the problems described above and agreed that I could change host families for the last week. One day before the change of host family, I had problems with my lungs. For this reason, I decided to stay in a hotel for the last night to protect my health.

"I noticed a slight lack of 'hygiene even during breakfast. The room was not cleaned after the first week. I had to buy toilet paper because it was pointed out to me that I was consuming so much.
I had to rent a bike to do the school-to-home route to be independent and because public transportation was not very punctual.
In the next course I will take a B&B closer to the school and to be more independent.

"I lived in a flat with my husband. The location was very good as it was quiet and not far from the school and the beach. The furnishings were a bit older. There was some furniture in the flat that we could not use. The washing machine did not work and there were problems with the drain in the kitchen unit. Overall, it still had a certain charm, so we accepted the accommodation.

My son speaks perfect German, English and Russian. I want him to share a room with a teenager who has a different native language.

“Lessons are held in French, even from a relatively low level. The teachers only use English in an "emergency" when you're stuck. The immersive learning usually works very well, because the teachers are trained accordingly and can inspire even beginners with simple words for the language and promote learning progress!”
