Location: Linguaviva Florence is located in the magnificent city of Florence, in Italy's Tuscany region. The school is housed in the Santa Maria Novella neighbourhood, within walking distance of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Basilica di San Lorenzo, the Piazza della Repubblica and the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence, amongst many other sites of historical and cultural interest. There are also several restaurants, shops, cinemas and amenities within walking distance of the school.

Course selection: Linguaviva offers General Italian and Italian programmes with a difference. In addition to General Italian programmes taught over various schedules and intensities, the school also provide Italian courses in combination with Arts, History, Cooking and Internships. Cultural programmes for seniors, University Foundation programmes and Summer Preparation programmes for Italian universities are also readily available.

Social and cultural: Florence is a culturally rich city that is steeped in history. The Church of San Salvatore al Monte, the Rose and Iris Gardens, the monumental ramps designed by Giuseppe Poggi, Piazzale Michelangelo, and the Church of San Miniato al Monte are all registered UNESCO world heritage sites.

School chain: The Linguaviva Group has supplied Italian language programmes for over 45 years. They currently have schools in Milan, Lignano and Florence, in addition to Italian language programmes in Japan (Tokyo) and China (Shanghai).

Linguaviva’s Italian Standard course at their Florence location allows students to develop all the main language skills simultaneously: writing, reading, listening and speaking. This is consistent with the general approach of the course, as it is intended to be useful for a wide range of people and backgrounds. This option represents 20 hours of lessons every week.

This school prefers to avoid translation in the classroom, meaning that all communication and explanation will be given in Italian, in a way that is tailored to your current level. You will use a course book (charged separately) throughout this programme, with your teacher providing additional materials when necessary, as well as directing interactive and dynamic activities with your peers.

Included in your tuition fees, you will receive: the accommodation placement service, the placement test to determine your initial group, academic counselling specifically for Italian universities, certificates, and Linguaviva’s exam fee.

“Punctuality and good treatment.”
“The level of teaching, I expected more, it was totally basic. I think it is complemented if you stay another two weeks or if you want to improve your level attend at any other date to the standard course. However, it will not be aimed at people over 50 years old.”
Insider tip: “The school does not inform you about your level of Italian that the initial test shows.”

Quality of teaching / language progress: The visits were very well organized, especially the excellent information provided by Virginia. She is a true art historian who knows how to communicate her knowledge. Other comments: I really appreciate that you offer courses for seniors (50 years and over). We are still functional. Thank you.

“The organisation of the accommodation is good, helpful people, classrooms are equipped, every week the teacher changes.
There was listening, we watched video clips, half of the lesson once a week they take you to the city during lessons for a quest, interesting. Teachers try to make time for everyone, this is a plus.”
“The teaching is weak. One week more or less taught well, the second week was bad luck. When you ask, "Why is it this way and not that way?" The question is simply avoided, without saying the answer. Mostly went through grammar, wrote down words. The same can be done from home. Very few words/expressions were given as locals say and what on the internet (for example) you can't learn just like that. There were 8 people in the class, but my personal opinion is that this is too many. We were divided into groups, but it didn't make much sense in practice.”

The Shared Flats accommodation are residences that have been carefully selected by Linguaviva in Florence, and are ideal for those students who prefer to live an independent lifestyle, without the expectation of taking part in the daily routine of a homestay family. The school deliberately tries to group you with other students that don’t speak your native language, in order to encourage that communication takes place in Italian while you’re at home.

As this is the single room option, you will have your own private space to rest and study in. The kitchen and bathroom are to be shared with your flatmates and will have to be cleaned and looked after mutually. The school promises that this type of accommodation is always situated a maximum of 20 minutes away from the school on foot and that in many cases is even closer.

Bed linens and towels are provided.

"In the first week they put me in a very nice and beautiful flat, but the bus stop was far away ( 10 minutes on foot ) plus it took almost 20 minutes to get there. It was inconvenient to go home at night, so I asked for new accommodation. The second week in the new accommodation I was given a 5sq/m room, too small, but it was in the centre (5 minutes from Santa Maria Fiori).

Questions and answers about Linguaviva

When do the afternoon activities start at the Linguaviva in Florence?
“Concerning the social activities, actually, most of them start before 3.00 PM, so unfortunately may not be compatible with the attendance of the Intensive course.”
Alessio Milani, Admission Officer from Linguaviva - Dec 03, 2025
Can I book the shared apartment at Linguaviva in Florence for just one week?
“Unfortunately, the shared flat option is really not accessible for one week only. We are so sorry for this”
Alessio Milani, Admissions Officer from Linguaviva - Dec 03, 2025
Does Linguaviva in Florence also have host families with private bathrooms?
“We do have some hosting families who can provide private bathrooms for guests. There is no supplement, as it cannot be 100% guaranteed.”
Alessio Milani, Admission Officer from Linguaviva - Dec 03, 2025
My daughter would like to book accommodation for a week with young participants. What is possible at the Linguaviva in Florence?
“What we could do, if the homestay may sound like an option, is to confirm a placement for your daughter in a family where there is at least another student of a similar age.”
Alessio Milani, Admissions Officer from Linguaviva - Dec 03, 2025
We don't land until around 10.25 at night. Is that a problem with the host family?
“Check-in is normally allowed until 10 PM; however, host families may be a bit flexible on this, yet it would be preferable that you select a flight arriving within the scheduled time frame (8.00 AM – 10.00 PM) to make the placement easier.”
Alessio Milani, Admissions Officer from Linguaviva - Dec 03, 2025
Suppose there are not enough 50+ students and the course does not go ahead. What happens then?
“If the minimum number of participants is not reached, we are happy to offer students an alternative solution for the same value and the same dates that combines our standard Italian language course (20 lessons per week) with a schedule of afternoon activities, arranging an option almost identical to the schedule offered as a cultural programme for seniors, the only difference being that the activities are also open to all other Linguaviva students - so there may be some changes in that case, but it won't be that much different. It has happened in the past and, in fact, most applicants also really liked this alternative option.”
Alessio Milani, Admission Office from Linguaviva - Jan 13, 2025
In which language are the activities offered?
“The activities are carried out in the language to be learned.”
Tanja, Languagecourse.Net - Mar 29, 2023
