8 English General Courses for adults in Durham

Available from April to November.One week consists of 23 hours of classes, including a half-day trip. Outside the classroom, we make every effort to ensure you have a chance to use your English with English people, whether it be in-class guest speakers or people you meet on your social trips. Each day has three hours of classes in the morning and two hours in the afternoon. Morning classes are topic-based or deal with everyday English situations. All the grammar is introduced systematically and integrated with the situations and topics. New structures are learnt through student-centred activities, with language targets practised through pair work and group work. The teachers use a range of teaching materials, making use of internationally-recognised course books and work they have created themselves. Afternoon classes are structured around speaking and listening activities, and include the following: • Drama - a chance to get up from your desk and bring your English alive. • Tutorial - a weekly meeting to discuss your progress and assess your learning goals. You can also bring up any non-academic concerns you might have. • Walk 'n' Talk - we simply walk and talk, usually along Durham's beautiful riverbanks. We talk about the things around us, topics you've studied in class, just about anything. • Talking Towns - a unique project created by Durham School of English that allows you to find out about Durham through its shops and businesses • Social trips preparation - on most of our trips, you will have a chance to ask local people questons to find out more about the place. In order to help you do this, we will give you some information about the place beforehand and go over some of the background vocabulary you might need. • Guest Speakers - listen as a local professional, perhaps a teacher or police officer, tells you about their life and work. It's another chance for you to listen to real English.
