Information about Olinda
Why Olinda? Olinda is a colonial town on Brazil’s northeast coast and was once the richest city in Brazil and is considered today to be one of the best preserved regions of such times. Founded in 1535 by the Portuguese, it’s built on steep hillsides and is known today as an artists’ colony, with many galleries, workshops and museums sprinkled around the city. In the centre of old Olinda, time seems to have stood still and the cobbled streets are home to 18th-century architecture, magnificent baroque churches and covents, convents, monasteries and brightly painted houses. Steeped in history and dotted with shady plazas and tall swaying palm trees, its no surprise that the village was awarded a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage status.
