Getting around: The closest metro station is a 6-minute bus trip from the school. There are two lines that go through this station. Overall rating
4.0
“All good. The teacher is engaging and responds well to questions. Use of the electronic whiteboard is helpful. The course is systematic in its approach. Some extra information about the language maintains student interest.”
“The zoom experience is as good as it can be but it’s not the same as being physically present. For example I can’t hear well the other students. However I am grateful for the experience. There are no Korean classes beyond the basic in my city.”
Insider tip: “Put in a lot of time.”

Quality of teaching / language progress: It’s enjoyable but I am an older student on Zoom so it requires a lot of reinforcement practice which I need to do on my own.Other comments: Maybe some occasional online social group or activity for zoom users if there are enough of them?

“The school offers plenty of activities outside of class, so you naturally get to know other students, even if you come alone. You can also choose optional afternoon classes, so it’s a great environment for studying intensively.

The school is located underneath the station, so getting there is incredibly easy.”
“Most non-Japanese students preferred to communicate in English, so at first I was a little overwhelmed and found it hard to jump into conversations.”

“Quiet location. Air-conditioned.

I enjoyed the restaurant evening.

The weekly coursebook structure meant that students could enter at any point.”
“Repetitious exercises and boring classes. Showed little imagination or appreciation of modern language teaching methodology (though this depended on the teacher).

Studies have shown that the average person cannot focus on one task topic for more than 20-25 minutes.

Yet our lessons went for 3 hours with exactly the same drills. There needs to be a variety in the teaching and presentation of the material.

The exclusive use of hangugo to explain the grammar makes little sense for an elementary class. Often it would have been much more efficient for the student to read the explanation in a textbook in his native language.

But most of all, there was an overwhelming concentration on written exercises. After all, the reason students come to Korea is to practice speaking and listening.
The pictures in the course book were at times hard to interpret, and the examples were unrealistic: how often will I want to say: "The ball is between the two boxes"?
That said, there was a marked difference in the competence of the teachers in our class.

If this is how English is taught in Korean high schools, it is no wonder that so few Koreans speak English.”
Insider tip: “Bring a grammar/course book of the Korean language in your native language.”

Quality of teaching / language progress: Thank goodness I didn't enroll for the intensive course. 3 hours a day was more than I could bear! Other comments: I had two teachers who varied greatly in their ability. There was one pleasant teacher, but she showed little imagination beyond writing drills on the board. The other showed much more imagination in making use of the material at hand. The textbook had far too many drills of the same kind. The classes were mostly so boring I rarely stayed for the full 3 hours. I did learn to practice reading hangeul. But students could have worked through the course books on their own at home, without coming to class; it would have made little difference on the whole. No attempt to bring students together or to set up common areas for social activities (tea and coffee).

“Please note, that my course was an on-line course, so the location does not really matter. I do have to say that I appreciate the fact that an on-line course was available. The teacher and the course material was excellent, and the classmates were great. I was offered to jump to a higher class in case I wanted to, but I preferred to stay on a lower level in order to improve my speech ability rather than learn a lot of new grammar. I feel that the course has enforced my knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, and given me a lot of confidence to speak Korean. Before the course, it felt like I was unable to say anything at all.”

“Even though it was a beginner's class, I felt the grammar instruction was too teacher-centered. If there had been better coordination with the afternoon class, the students might have improved their language skills.”
Insider tip: “It is better if you can speak English.”

Quality of teaching / language progress: I would have preferred more speaking practice instead of writing practice, particularly in the afternoon class.Other comments: Overall, it was well-organized. “The teachers were really great and the classes were a lot of fun. I regret that 2 weeks was not enough. I wish I could have asked more questions if I could have spoken English!”
“In the first morning class, the explanation was in English, so I thought that Japanese students with poor English skills would have a hard time understanding the explanation. Students also asked questions in English, so I often had a hard time catching the conversations. Sometimes it was more understandable for me to listen if they spoke in Korean.”
Insider tip: “For the beginner level, it is tough to keep up with the class if you do not have English ability. Many students in the beginner class may not understand Korean, so both teachers and students speak only in English.”

“The teachers and staff have been friendly and helpful. The location of the school right next to Gangnam Station is good. The lessons are quite demanding and intensive. I really liked that the lessons were varied. Besides vocabulary and grammar, there were also opportunities to practise conversation. I found it neither good nor bad that there were a lot of German-speaking students there (at least when I was there).”
“The afternoon course was a bit too low for me in terms of level, but unfortunately there was no higher level offered. I personally thought it was good that the course progressed so quickly, but I can imagine that it can also be a bit overwhelming in some circumstances. Especially for people who haven't been learning for that long.”

“Even though I felt like the lessons progressed slowly (only one grammar point per 3-hour class), going every day really helped my Korean listening, and I started picking up words and phrases outside of class.”
Insider tip: “I felt like my first placement was too easy and the teacher said so too, and since I was only there for a week, I asked the staff to change my level, and they did.”

Other comments: The course was called “intensive” and while the classroom hours were long, I felt that the lessons progressed quite slowly and that the teachers were often talking/showing us YouTube videos just to kill time. “The location is very convenient (very central in Gangnam and very close to metro and bus) and I liked the teacher I had (she knew a lot, had good teaching skills, was patient and made me feel comfortable, she encouraged me to speak. ..)”
Insider tip: “Once you are assigned a group, your teacher is your contact person for everything, and the one that signs you in for activities, gives you your final certificate and sees you off on our last day. You don't really get to have hardly any contact with the rest of the staff.”
Details of the review
Other comments: In general, everything was correct and as expected, although my first day was quite chaotic at first. I want to think that it was because sudden heavy rains on the way to school caused many new students to arrive together and with less anticipation than expected as transport was affected due to the rain. So it was all a bit confusing and chaotic at reception but it was solved in a few minutes.

"I am afraid it is impossible for the Japanese to stay in "Gosiwon". The school arranged a hotel for me on short notice, but it was too expensive and I gave up staying there. I stayed at the hotel for 5 nights from Friday, but it was a pity that it cost me an additional 800,000 won because of the high season. It would be nice to have a more clear picture of the rooms. The owner was very nice to me, but I had never lived with a bathroom in front of my living space, so I had to eat out and study in a cooler cafe where I stayed until closing time. I was able to eat an onigiri (rice balls) made of freshly cooked rice once outside, but the rest of the food was discolored, so I could not eat it. The cost of food was also quite expensive. But I was glad to get the knowledge of how to choose a room for the next time when I attend school.

My brother is coming on the same plane but is staying in the hotel and is not taking the course. I am in the teen programme in a host family. Can you also organize the airport transfer for him?
“Your accommodation (host family) and your brother's (hotel) are different and two tours may be necessary if you live too far apart. When we receive the family details, approx. 1-2 weeks before arrival, we can also inquire about the transfer. Now (2 months before arrival) it is still too early for that. Once we know where you will be staying, we will help you organize both transfers.”
