Location: Accent Francais is in the heart of the historical centre of Montpellier, a few steps from Place de la Comédie, and in close quarters to the city’s tourist attractions. The school is only 15km away from the city’s picturesque natural beaches. Students can look forward to enjoying some of the world’s largest vineyards along with places like the Pope’s palace, Avignon, Nimes, Pont du Guard and plenty of naturally scenic locales.

Travelling around: The school has an excellent location within the city, with a tram station practically opposite their entrance and plenty of bus stops scattered throughout the streets nearby. The Montpellier Saint-Roch train station is a short walk from the school, whose line stretches across the Mediterranean coast.

Course selection: There are state-of-the-art facilities and a robust curriculum for all courses at Accent Francais. Students can take general French courses as well as more intensive higher education courses for those aspiring to university education. In the summer months there are a selection of junior courses for teenagers. A holistic approach to education is used at the school, and this is reflected in their courses on food, cooking, volunteering as well as internship opportunities that help students deepen their understanding of the French language in a real world setting.

Additional information: Excursions and after class activities are available year round at Accent Francais, so students can interact with other students at the school as well as experience the diversity of the surrounding area.

The Standard French course in Montpellier is a part-time programme which includes 20 lessons/week (15 hours total) in small group classes. One of the most popular aspects of this course is that it offers an immersive experience, since classes are always in French at all times, and you can take advantage of living in Montpellier to get your daily conversation practice.
During your time on this course, you can expect to cover the most fundamental aspects of language learning: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. You will be assigned to the student group that is closest to your current French language level, with the possibility of progressing to other groups as you improve over time.

Standard classes are generally in the mornings but during peak periods, they may take place in the afternoon as well from 14:15 to 17:30.

"The school is excellent, I recommend it to everyone! Great prices, great school location in the center of Montpellier. Every day, some events are organized for students, which allow you to learn more about the city, as well as get to know other students better. The teachers are all young and very energetic, a lot of materials are used, both written, and oral, and video. The only negative after all, 6-7 people in the group are a bit too much, 1.5 hours pass quickly, the teacher can sometimes be distracted for a long time by the question of one of the students, or sometimes it takes a long time to wait for a student who thinks slower. The teacher often did not have time to teach what was planned. Individual lessons are of course very expensive. If your language level is above average, ask several times which group you will be placed in and the knowledge students will have there, so as not to be placed in a lower level. As I noticed, for a higher level of language, the school has problems defining the right group. But in general I am very pleased that I chose this particular school. I enjoyed it a lot!"

“I would advise against the school for those who are preparing for a DELF/DALF exam. During my 6 weeks I had various teacher changes, which meant that my learning support suffered greatly.”

I see that you did not refer to us during these 6 weeks, this could have changed the curse of your experience. During these 6 weeks, you had 2 teachers for the General French and 3 teachers for the DELF prep, which is pretty stable. Thanks for our pedagogical methods and weekly programs evaluations, the progression is guaranteed as well as the personalised follow up. We offer free pedagogical tutoring and workshop to support our students learning path. We also achieve a high success rate to the DELF exam with our students as we offer small groups (1-5 students) which allows us to work on the oral written exam.

This gives you more time to explore the city.Other comments: The team is super friendly. I thought it was very cool that everyone introduced themselves at the beginning and you really get the feeling that they also remember all the names and faces. “I spent 15 weeks at Accent Francais in Montpelier from Sept-Dec. The staff and the teachers were all wonderful. David was my teacher for morning classes the whole time and I’m very glad he was. He’s SO patient with all the newbies and eager to teach new skills, too. Great sense of humor and excellent teaching techniques. Marie was my afternoon teacher and was able to be both structured in her teaching and personable with the students. I really enjoyed her classes. Virginia, the director, was open to feedback, and fun to be around. The school is small in terms of actual square footage, but provided what we needed. I really loved my time there.”
“As I mentioned to the director, I would've appreciated a more structured approach to the syllabus shared with the students. It would be helpful to have a syllabus that lets us know what we would be covering each week/day and what overall competencies we should expect with each level achievement. That would make any changes such as a teacher out sick, etc., seamless as then any substitute could just refer to the syllabus and continue the planned lessons.”

At times -- as a beginner -- I felt overwhelmed without enough time to process all the new info daily. In hindsight, I think it would've been better for me to start with just the morning classes and then taken on adding afternoon classes once I had a basic grasp of things.Other comments: I would recommend this school because of the overall atmosphere of friendliness, location, and quality of the teachers.

“The very broad mixture of ages in the class was at times difficult, especially for the teacher. I purposefully chose a class outside of northern hemisphere vacation hoping that I would avoid a majority of school aged students, but I was mistaken. Most students were still teenagers. Those on programs organised by their schools basically behaved like it was a school excursion and did not appear interested at all. Their constant chatting and inattention was challenging and the topics of practice conversation were limited to a much younger age group. Nevertheless, the teachers were clearly experienced in dealing with this type of behaviour and managed well. I would have much preferred a class of somewhat more mature students, but I can imagine that just depends on who has enrolled for that week.”

Quality of teaching / language progress: The cooking course was amazing and just so much fun. The students came from a variety of language schools across Montpelier and a huge variety of nations. The chef teacher was fantastic and so patient. There were lots of laughs and the food we cooked was, somewhat surprisingly given our skill level, delicious.Other comments: There are many language schools in Montpelier and it is difficult to know which to choose. Accent Francais was very efficient and professional. The location is great - just opposite the main train station, and very close to all the wonderful sights and experiences in Montpelier. The teachers were terrific and clearly well trained and experienced. The experience with the school students I described was not isolated to Accent Francais. It was a common complaint from students from other language schools in Montpelier (whom I met in the cooking classes). Obviously these school programs provide good business to the language schools, but perhaps there is a time of year when there are far less school students which could be advertised? Please note that I am a high school teacher. I completely understand adolescent and school trip behaviour and these students were just acting as any other young people do away from home.

“My host family was excellent. We spoke every evening during dinner, which I really appreciated. I spoke more at home than in class. The teacher was good, but not the best I have ever had. I also liked the cooking classes.”
“I liked the teachers in the cooking classes, but the number of students was excessive, about 20 give or take. This meant that the work/meal was divided between smaller groups, each responsible for a part of the whole meal. I understand that, but the first day, I chopped some vegetables, measured the weight of some ingredients on the scale, and watched others do their tasks. I took a cooking class in Lyon a few years ago. There were 7 of us and it was about right. In that class we all heard the instructions for each dish. In THIS course, each group was focused on their own part and couldn’t focus on any other parts of the dish. While I liked that there were students from 3 language schools in Montpellier, perhaps a less ambitious meal and a choice of time slots would be better for all to lear cooking techniques and theory.”

“The variety of countries the students came from and a few older students. The additional afternoon course was very good for both teachers and students.”
“All of my classmates were quite dissatisfied with the course, as we had three different teachers in one week in the basic course, and the teaching style and atmosphere varied from teacher to teacher. Some teachers were easy to understand and made the class exciting, others were not at the learner's level and their lessons were not interesting, and still, others were not familiar with the technology in the classroom and spent a lot of time wasting our time on it. The school's rule of " No late arrivals over 10 minutes" was not respected at all. Some of the students were on social networking sites all the time during class. I am sorry to say that I will never go to this school again.”
Insider tip: “The level of teachers varies, so you should not expect too much. Also, in the summer, there are too many students, and the reception desk cannot keep up with the workload, so you should be prepared for explanations on the first day to be sketchy and a lot of waiting time.”

Quality of teaching / language progress: The Intensive Course seemed to have a high goal-oriented atmosphere for both students and teachers, and I am glad I was able to attend.Other comments: I was a little disappointed when I participated in this school 5 years ago because of the difference in the level of the teachers, but this time I found it to be even worse. It may be that there is a shortage of teachers due to COVID, etc., but I expect that the teachers should be of a certain level or higher since I paid high tuition fees to take classes in France (the teachers at my school in Japan were definitely of a higher level).

Quality of teaching / language progress: More unclear than in other schools. I knew teaching could be in the afternoon. My classes were between 16.15-19.30 which I perceive more as afternoon/evening. The cultural program means that you pay for part of the general activity program in advance. I thought it was a specific program. I also couldn't take part in all the activities because it was at the same time as my classes.Other comments: No one answered the emergency number when I could not enter my accommodation.

Insider tip: “Unfortunately, I stayed there only for one week. You'd better book at least a 2-4 weeks course. You fully immerse in the environment, the adaptation process takes 3-4 days. In my case, I just got used to it and I had to go back. You can extend the courses , but my time was limited. This is a city of students, very beautiful, modern, located on the shores of the Mediterranean, which can be reached directly by tram. Lots of impressions! I'm very grateful to my host, Alda. She helped a lot with the language, she spoke French all the time and explained the things I didn't understand in other French words. Thanks to her, I immersed into the French atmosphere completely!”

"The accommodation is just super !!! The hostess is a sweet and very kind woman! It was very interesting to talk with her, she has a great sense of humor. She met me at the airport, paid for the fare, got back with me at 5.30 in the morning, took me to the station and also paid for the fare. The room is beautiful, clean and bright. Breakfast is of course French, small but adequate. The location is fantastic, 5 minutes from school at a fast pace.

I would like to ask about the 4 extra hours of Coaching which are included in the standard course, on which days do these 4 hours take place?
“Our Standard course includes 24 lessons of 45 minutes (not hours) and is dispatched as follow :
- 20 lessons of General French, 3 hours a day.
- 2 lessons of pedagogical tutoring on Mondays: a teacher is available every Monday to assist our students with their homework, language progression, questions, etc.
- 2 lessons of pedagogical workshop on Fridays: it is a different topic every week like wine tasting, street French, theatre, conversation, etc.”

“The activities will be announced shortly before the course starts, but you can check out the activities from the past months and years on the blog. The programme will be similar this year in May with a selection of a welcome tour in Montpellier, evening meetings, yoga, dancing, language tandem and a variety of excursions. The school offers many options for activities and there is sure to be something that is right for you!”

How can I imagine the cooking course? Is it more "basic" compared to professionals, or rather at an absolute beginner's level. I've been cooking for over 30 years, but only ever for "home use". So I don't have to learn how to clean vegetables anymore, but I don't want to cook nouvelle cuisine either. It's more about being in exchange with people and being able to speak more French.
“The cooking classes are really designed to meet, speak French, learn the vocabulary of the kitchen and have fun while cooking recipes together. They're usually simple, though, and here's an example of what we did when I visited them a couple of weeks ago:
- Soufflé de Courge (break eggs, beat egg whites until stiff, prepare pumpkin)
- Poisson au beurre d'herbes et pürée de carottes (e.g. peel, boil and puree carrots, prepare herb butter, bread and bake fish fillets)
- Poires au Caramel (prepare the pears (peel, cut), prepare and assemble the caramel)

I think it's a nice way to spend a good moment with French chefs, practice the language and enjoy typical French dishes. However, if you wants to learn cooking techniques, it may not be the right programme for you.”

I'm interested in French and Yoga. What is the schedule and how many yoga sessions are included?
“The yoga school offers either Vinyasa Yoga or Ashtanga Yoga at different times. A total of 6 sessions of yoga per week are included. You will be informed of the timetable when you make your booking. Due to the French lessons you will probably have yoga in the afternoon/evening. We recommend that you only leave on Saturday afternoon or Sunday, because there is also an Ashtanga Yoga unit on Saturday morning that you definitely don't want to miss.”

“Accent Francais can offer a very good Teacher training course, however the teacher training part is in the form of individual lessons. The French for Teachers - Individual Coaching includes 26 lessons. The course combines the Standard Course (a small group of advanced French level) with 6 individual coaching sessions for French Language Teachers each week.”

I am permanently in a wheelchair. Can I get through the front door with my wheelchair without any problems? Reach all classrooms without any problem? Do you have wheelchair accessible toilets and can I easily reach the administration in a wheelchair? Do you know of any real wheelchair accessible accommodation?
“Our school reception, most classrooms (8/12) and bathroom are located on the ground floor, so the students in wheelchair could join us and enjoy the lessons. They can ring from the front door if they need assistance to open the door.

About the accommodation, the homestay might be difficult for us to find, but the residence we work with are all modern and adapted. I would like to recommend the Odalys, which is only a few steps away from school.

I'm a beginner in French (can speak Spanish) and am in my sixties. Wondering about age distribution in classes and how one moves from one level to another throughout the time spent, in my case 15 weeks.
“Each level lasts 10 weeks at Accent Francais, so you would end with an A1+ level. We work with native teachers and authentic course material provided by the teachers. Students don't need to buy a book. We offer effective course material from French daily life for more efficiency.
Regarding the age distribution, we welcome students from 16 to 90 years of age year-round. The average age is 25 years, as we have many teenagers during the summertime. Still, more than 11% of our students are 40+ and 3% are in their 60’s. As we have nearly 100 students at school during the low season, this makes a nice group of people to meet.”
