"Thank you Marie Clare for choosing our school and for sharing your feedback with us ! It was a delight to greet you both with Graham for almost 3 months at our French language school. We work hard to offer an experience that will suit all profiles, including 50 adults, and we are thrilled to see your feedback here. We did some work this summer to improve ventilation in the classrooms, we'll be doing more this winter and redesign the furniture to better organise the space. Take care and keep learning French !"

Response from school
"Dear Joschka, thank you for sharing your feedback ! We are sad to learn that you did not fully enjoy your program, especially as our team is available to listen to students. I see that you did not refer to us during these 6 weeks, this could have changed the curse of your experience. During these 6 weeks, you had 2 teachers for the General French and 3 teachers for the DELF prep, which is pretty stable. Thanks for our pedagogical methods and weekly programs evaluations, the progression is guaranteed as well as the personalised follow up. We offer free pedagogical tutoring and workshop to support our students learning path. We also achieve a high success rate to the DELF exam with our students as we offer small groups (1-5 students) which allows us to work on the oral written exam."

Positive aspects of school
"- It is possible to change levels. - It is interactive, everyone is encouraged to speak and take on tasks. - The teachers all speak very clearly and at a good speed - The tasks and topics are very varied. The programme changes every week. - Requests are catered for during the lessons (e.g. repetition of grammar) - Lessons in small groups"
Negative aspects
"It would have been cool to get more information on grammar. However, you can easily find this online."

Other comments
"The team is super friendly. I thought it was very cool that everyone introduced themselves at the beginning and you really get the feeling that they also remember all the names and faces. They cater to individual wishes and try to organise your trip as well as possible."
Quality of teaching / language progress
"Completely sufficient. I would recommend extending a week rather than choosing the intensive course. This gives you more time to explore the city."

Response from school
"Dear Katharina, thank you for sharing your experience with us ! It is a pleasure to read your feedback here as we are working hard to make this immersion program as smooth and beneficial for our students. Our native French teachers are all experienced and graduated to teach French as a foreign language. We also use interactive teaching methods in our classes combined with a structured pedagogical path for a personalised follow up. It is true that sometimes our students don't feel like we are working on grammar, but we definitely do it through the practice for a more effective lesson. Hope to see you again ! Take care and keep learning French !"

"+ central location + on request, alternating morning and afternoon lessons made possible (instead of only afternoon lessons) + teachers and people are very nice + many leisure activities"
Negative aspects
"I hope that they will implement weekly morning and afternoon classes, and not only afternoon classes, as we had previously thought; at our insistence, they were kind enough to change it. I would have been very happy to have a room that was accessible for breaks. We always had to go out to eat. (But that's rather harsh criticism now). The rooms could be a bit bigger, we were sometimes very cramped in the room."

Positive aspects of school
"I spent 15 weeks at Accent Francais in Montpelier from Sept-Dec. The staff and the teachers were all wonderful. David was my teacher for morning classes the whole time and I’m very glad he was. He’s SO patient with all the newbies and eager to teach new skills, too. Great sense of humor and excellent teaching techniques. Marie was my afternoon teacher and was able to be both structured in her teaching and personable with the students. I really enjoyed her classes. Virginia, the director, was open to feedback, and fun to be around. The school is small in terms of actual square footage, but provided what we needed. I really loved my time there."
Negative aspects
"As I mentioned to the director, I would've appreciated a more structured approach to the syllabus shared with the students. It would be helpful to have a syllabus that lets us know what we would be covering each week/day and what overall competencies we should expect with each level achievement. That would make any changes such as a teacher out sick, etc., seamless as then any substitute could just refer to the syllabus and continue the planned lessons."

Quality of teaching / language progress
"I took 25 weeks of the intensive (morning and afternoon) classes. At times -- as a beginner -- I felt overwhelmed without enough time to process all the new info daily. In hindsight, I think it would've been better for me to start with just the morning classes and then taken on adding afternoon classes once I had a basic grasp of things."

Positive aspects of school
"Very well organised and teachers were professional, friendly and very patient."
Negative aspects
"The very broad mixture of ages in the class was at times difficult, especially for the teacher. I purposefully chose a class outside of northern hemisphere vacation hoping that I would avoid a majority of school aged students, but I was mistaken. Most students were still teenagers. Those on programs organised by their schools basically behaved like it was a school excursion and did not appear interested at all. Their constant chatting and inattention was challenging and the topics of practice conversation were limited to a much younger age group. Nevertheless, the teachers were clearly experienced in dealing with this type of behaviour and managed well. I would have much preferred a class of somewhat more mature students, but I can imagine that just depends on who has enrolled for that week."
Details of the review
Other comments
"There are many language schools in Montpelier and it is difficult to know which to choose. Accent Francais was very efficient and professional. The location is great - just opposite the main train station, and very close to all the wonderful sights and experiences in Montpelier. The teachers were terrific and clearly well trained and experienced. The experience with the school students I described was not isolated to Accent Francais. It was a common complaint from students from other language schools in Montpelier (whom I met in the cooking classes). Obviously these school programs provide good business to the language schools, but perhaps there is a time of year when there are far less school students which could be advertised? Please note that I am a high school teacher. I completely understand adolescent and school trip behaviour and these students were just acting as any other young people do away from home."

"Absolutely beautiful! easy to get around and so much to see and do."
Quality of teaching / language progress
"The cooking course was amazing and just so much fun. The students came from a variety of language schools across Montpelier and a huge variety of nations. The chef teacher was fantastic and so patient. There were lots of laughs and the food we cooked was, somewhat surprisingly given our skill level, delicious."

Positive aspects of school
"My host family was excellent. We spoke every evening during dinner, which I really appreciated. I spoke more at home than in class. The teacher was good, but not the best I have ever had. I also liked the cooking classes."
Negative aspects
"I liked the teachers in the cooking classes, but the number of students was excessive, about 20 give or take. This meant that the work/meal was divided between smaller groups, each responsible for a part of the whole meal. I understand that, but the first day, I chopped some vegetables, measured the weight of some ingredients on the scale, and watched others do their tasks. I took a cooking class in Lyon a few years ago. There were 7 of us and it was about right. In that class we all heard the instructions for each dish. In THIS course, each group was focused on their own part and couldn’t focus on any other parts of the dish. While I liked that there were students from 3 language schools in Montpellier, perhaps a less ambitious meal and a choice of time slots would be better for all to lear cooking techniques and theory."

Positive aspects of school
"The variety of countries the students came from and a few older students. The additional afternoon course was very good for both teachers and students."
Negative aspects
"All of my classmates were quite dissatisfied with the course, as we had three different teachers in one week in the basic course, and the teaching style and atmosphere varied from teacher to teacher. Some teachers were easy to understand and made the class exciting, others were not at the learner's level and their lessons were not interesting, and still, others were not familiar with the technology in the classroom and spent a lot of time wasting our time on it. The school's rule of " No late arrivals over 10 minutes" was not respected at all. Some of the students were on social networking sites all the time during class. I am sorry to say that I will never go to this school again."
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
"The level of teachers varies, so you should not expect too much. Also, in the summer, there are too many students, and the reception desk cannot keep up with the workload, so you should be prepared for explanations on the first day to be sketchy and a lot of waiting time."
Details of the review
Other comments
"I was a little disappointed when I participated in this school 5 years ago because of the difference in the level of the teachers, but this time I found it to be even worse. It may be that there is a shortage of teachers due to COVID, etc., but I expect that the teachers should be of a certain level or higher since I paid high tuition fees to take classes in France (the teachers at my school in Japan were definitely of a higher level)."

"More unclear than in other schools. I knew teaching could be in the afternoon. My classes were between 16.15-19.30 which I perceive more as afternoon/evening. The cultural program means that you pay for part of the general activity program in advance. I thought it was a specific program. I also couldn't take part in all the activities because it was at the same time as my classes."

They wrote that one could contact them if something was not right. I wanted to find out what they were not happy with. No answer, they also deducted the money directly from my account without waiting for my answer."

"Unfortunately, I stayed there only for one week. You'd better book at least a 2-4 weeks course. You fully immerse in the environment, the adaptation process takes 3-4 days. In my case, I just got used to it and I had to go back. You can extend the courses , but my time was limited. This is a city of students, very beautiful, modern, located on the shores of the Mediterranean, which can be reached directly by tram. Lots of impressions! I'm very grateful to my host, Alda. She helped a lot with the language, she spoke French all the time and explained the things I didn't understand in other French words. Thanks to her, I immersed into the French atmosphere completely!"

Positive aspects of school
"Best thing about this school - apart from it being in Montpellier, which is a great town, beautiful, relaxed and friendly - was the teachers, who are excellent and very sympathique. The other people in my class (B2 level) were great too, and their average level of French was very good, which I think must have been at least in part due to the quality of the teaching at this school, which several of them had been attending for some time. There is a fairly strong emphasis on speaking, which I liked a lot because that is the hardest of the four macro skills to master, and it's certainly the one I needed most help with. Writing is not neglected either."

Other comments
"Only problem here was the organisation of the accommodation: I had requested "Chez l'habitant, chambre avec accès cuisine" but was placed in a shared appartment (collocation) with other foreign students, who all spoke English to me. But the school's admin staff were very responsive and quickly placed me in a more suitable home. On the whole, the school seemed quite well organised. I was particularly impressed by their emphasis on students being punctual and making sure that classes always start on time."

Positive aspects of school
"We had an incredible teacher for my intensive course, otherwise I would be completely devastated for spending my money there."
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
"They use photocopies instead of workbooks. They claim this is because of the "individual student" but that's not believable."
Details of the review
Other comments
"They work on a strict schedule instead of at the individual student's level. If you believe you should be in a higher level, they ask you which one instead of re-evaluating you. It's disappointing for the money I've spent. Also, they should group students as adults and teens including their level as it's hard to study with the teens."

Response from school
"Dear Jacqueline,First of all I'd like to thank you for taking the time to rate us and comment on the school. We're glad you liked your teacher and we are very sorry to hear that you are not completely satisfied with your time at the school.Your comments are really important to us and we will definitely work with all our team on the points you highlighted to better us as much as possible."

Positive aspects of school
"I'm really unhappy with the school. It wasn't what I expected. The course wasn't organised as an intensive course but as an annual school program and the student just joins in during the week they are in and that's it.The learning pace is too relaxed in relation to the cost of the course. They do not take the level of the student into account, the level mix is too wide so that students with higher knowledge of the language cannot learn anything. When the class had a smaller number of people they didn't accept personal suggestions to improve the students' needs. The classes in the afternoon were a total waste of time. We would just write while the teacher chatted on the phone. As you can imagine, there is no point going abroad to learn a language if it is going to be like this."

"In my opinion, the written course material is insufficient and deficient. Copy of a copy, front size, not enough space to write down the answers. It was unsatisfying that as a senior group, we had so many levels in one groups. I can definitely see the financial benefit for the school. The tuition fee was too high. Jean Paul's knowledge is extensive but it did bother me that he incessantly had to show his knowledge of foreign languages. I resisted because this was part of a French course. Positive aspects of school
"The school is located in the heart of Montpellier, that is always ideal. The building is old and nice too, but classrooms vary a lot, some are nice and big, but others are very small and uncomfortable. Teachers were all nice, they have a lot of activities, some are free to join, like playing petanque, watching movies, even (simple) dance lessons. On the weekends the city trips where a bit overpriced for me so I did not join that."
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
"Montpellier is realy the best place to study French, probably because it is a student city with some universities. It is not too big and it has a nice atmosphere. For people who like wine it is perfect, a lot of nice winebars, and in the summer they have a wine festival every Friday where you can try local wines for a cheap price. For eating I recommend the "Flunch", it's very cheap and pretty good, and you can always get some more. For accomodation I recommend you try searching for something yourself on the internet - like a student room in the summer months. That's what I did and I was lucky in finding a good room in the centre. Some classmates had to travel a long way to school, try to avoid that."

"What a wonderful expereince! I am a professional from the US and there were so many great things to say. The city of Montpellier is a beautiful smaller European city with much to offer- Opera, museums and close to day-trips to regional historic cities. Though small, Montpellier is surprisingly cosmopolitan in its outlook and is a very welcoming place, especially for someone who has never experienced a different culture. The school was also very helpful, extremely friendly, and the classes were very well-taught. I only stayed a week, but it was worth it and would have liked to have stayed longer."
