Student reviews about "Intensive 25" at Plateros Spanish School
Galina 4.0
"As I was the only somewhat advanced participant who had booked 5 hours per day, the school offered me 2 hours of group lessons and 2 hours of individual lessons as an alternative. This was perfectly fine and very effective. "
Robert 5.0
"5 hours a day is a lot...good for 2 weeks but by week 4 I was knackered (tired)"
Barbara 5.0
"Teachers, lessons, classes & homework exercises were all amazing! I feel like I learned a lot in a short time. Class material was very interesting and relevant! Lots of historical and cultural information too. I also enjoyed meeting the other students too. The school is super cute and comfortable! The location in El Centro was very convenient too. I wish that there would have been more social opportunities, but summer might be a hard time for that."

Student reviews about "Intensive 25 PLUS" at Plateros Spanish School
Sandra 4.0
"The teacher for private lessons corrected my pronunciation and addressed my specific learning issues. It was serious learning but also encouraging even when I repeatedly made the same errors."
Marco 4.0
"I'm not one to give 5 stars, so I won't. But if I did, these people would get it. The school had wonderful educators, all of whom were well prepared and knowledgeable. I was a student for 5 weeks and was pleasantly surprised at how they were able to accommodate my needs, as well as keep the classes relevant and continually progressing thorough out the whole 5 weeks. My past schooling has been repetitive, due to the large number of short time students and the need to begin again every week. I would, and will, recommend this school for anyone wanting a solid educational and cultural experience. Cheers to everyone there. "

“Compared to other language schools, the classes here are kept small, which means you can ask questions immediately if you don't understand something.”

“I LOVED the school. The teaching was superlative. I am planning on returning and God willing bringing someone with me. The school did not offer excursions. I knew this before I arrived, so I do not think it is appropriate for me to comment on that. There was plenty for me to do on my own and any questions I had about traveling around in Guanajuato were accurately answered by the teachers there.”
“Not the fault of the school, but travelling here and there by taxi was often problematic. Taxis got lost and were sometimes late.”
Insider tip: “I would encourage students to check out inter Cambios with local people as well as ex-pats.”

I learned that I can hire my instructor for on-line Spanish classes while here in the states.Other comments: Just would like to extend my deepest respect and gratitude for all they did for me. I plan on returning.

“The quality of the instruction was excellent. The program I chose included classroom instruction for grammar/fluency and a separate program focused on the culture and history of Guanajuato. First, the instructor for the classroom portion was excellent. She explained pronunciation and grammar clearly and reinforced all instruction with opportunities for students to practice new concepts through discussion. The culture and history portion was also outstanding. We visited a number of historical and culture sites with Manuel, who clearly explained the context and significance of the sites.
The state of Guanajuato is especially significant in regard to the struggle for Mexican independence. We visited museums, churches, an original silver mine. We also had a class to learn how to cook traditional Mexican dishes.
If you want to sit in a room several hours a day and do worksheets, this is not the program for you. However, if you want a memorable program that improves your Spanish while learning fascinating culture and history, I highly recommend this school.”
“The facility is modern and very clean with an amazing view. There is a kitchen but no library.
For me, it was a pleasant walk to the school; however, persons with mobility issues may be a bit challenged because Guanajuato is a very hilly city. That being said, there is a bus that you can easily take to the school. Taxis are very reasonable and secure and are another way to arrive at the school.”
Insider tip: “There are many cultural opportunities in Guanajuato. You can always find theatre and musical events or just walk around the city center and take in the ambiance of a university town. You must visit El Pipila (accessible with funicular or walking) and the original silver mine concession.”

“The personal attention to us. Our teacher and the director were excellent in providing opportunities to practice and improve our Spanish.”
“The school facility is lovely but quite a distance from any cafes or the center of town. It was a rigorous walk from where we were staying. Once we figured out the route, we enjoyed the walk.”
Insider tip: “Go to the mines.”

“Its location in the center of Guanajuato and it was also one part of its weakness. I had asked many, many times, a host family in a house where there were not too many stairs. I thought I would die every day climbing the heights of the city, especially with a heart condition. It would have been very interesting if the school could have given a plan of the public transportation system.”
“No activities in three weeks.”

Insider tip: “The school is conveniently located in the heart of Centro. The school is next door to the campus of the University of Guanajuato, so don't be mistaken.”

Quality of teaching / language progress: I was lucky that I happened to be the only student, so I was able to study for a month in private lessons at a very reasonable price.Other comments: The teacher, Mari, was a friendly person who laughed a lot. Every Friday we practiced conversation over breakfast at a restaurant with a great view, which was also very enjoyable.

“Teachers were excellent. Miriam donated some time to share his special native Guanajuato culture with us.”
“Facilities were meager. Water bottle was empty one or two days. Lack of soap in bathroom a couple days. No extras like scheduled events, maps, notebooks.”
Insider tip: “In the winter, bring a heating pad. Try to get a good street map from the kiosk vendor at Jardin Union or perhaps a news stand. Good walking shoes a must. Check out the Cervantes/Quixote museum for music programmes. Don't miss the Alóndiga. Valenciana and a tour of a mine is worth the taxi fare.”

“My teachers were amazing - especially Mali! I learned SOOO much in two short weeks! The location of the school was great as well.”
“The school is not always the most organized. One morning when I showed up my first two classes had been rescheduled. This is no fault of the teachers but rather a fault of the organization. There are also no afternoon activities or excursions offered by the school.”
Insider tip: “Take the street tour that is given by the students. Check out the Mummy museum. Get lost in the streets of Guanajuato!”

Quality of teaching / language progress: I really recommend doing an hour or two of private classes so you can focus on the topics you want. In my group classes we had a two hour focus on grammar and then two hours on conversation. There were 10 minute breaks between classes. The classes flew by! Other comments: The teacher's are for sure the best assets of the school!

Quality of teaching / language progress: As I was the only somewhat advanced participant who had booked 5 hours per day, the school offered me 2 hours of group lessons and 2 hours of individual lessons as an alternative. This was perfectly fine and very effective.

“The teachers at Plateros Spanish School are super nice and know their job. They know what's important and how to teach you best. And yet they all have their own style. I was thrilled! You could always discuss the pace with them, arrange repetitions or clarify questions. Many thanks to Roman, Mali, Miriam and Ismael! I feel very well equipped with the basics and can build on it on my travels.”

“The location was ideal to get to know the city of Guanajuato and to be a part of its daily life.
The instructors were great at sparking conversation and asking questions to keep us talking. They spoke slowly and clearly without seeming to try to make it easier for us. They were interested and interesting. The whole experience was wonderful.”
“No orientation or introduction to the city. Instructors let many errors (grammar & punctuation) slide without correction. I know they wanted us to keep talking and not disturb our chain of thought too much, but we got sloppy and missed opportunities for learning. Classroom management was a bit weak at times:I was in several classes with only one other student, which was fantastic, but my fellow student dominated the time in some conversation classes I got thoroughly bored & frustrated … until I added private classes instead.”
Insider tip: “Take chances with the language and speak to people in shops and on the street. That’s where you really shed inhibitions. And 24-hour immersion really makes a difference.”

Quality of teaching / language progress: The 35Plus was described as a 7-hour combination of small group and 1on1 classes, but that was not actually the case. It was an excellent program, well worth the price, but I would recommend that one sign up for 5-6 classes and clearly request/include a private class or two to concentrate on applied grammar instruction each day … if one is serious about learning (and not on vacation with classes thrown in).Other comments: The director and instructors were all very interested in helping us thrive and in learning about our environments even as they taught us about history, culture, legends, and literature of Mexico. I am Very glad I was at Plateros.

“Too many positive aspects! The teachers were talented, helpful, interesting and friendly! The classes were fun and relevant- never boring or long. I always felt engaged and was able to work on what I needed/wanted. Homework and in class exercises provided lots of practice! Lots of individual attention. I also loved the setting- so beautiful and homey. The location in El Centro is amazing too.”
Insider tip: “Best coffee-Cafe Tal and Conquistador; Alongdigas Museum; Las Minas/mines in Valenciana; the churches; sopa Azteca at ‘Frieda’s on Los Postitos, fresh fruits (especially prickly pear/‘tuna’), ice cream/sorbet on the street; GTO University; Don Quixote Museum; Estacion Gelato
I also recommend contacting an ecotour company called Cacomixtle (cacomixtle.com). They are very affordable and offer urban walking & food tours, hiking trips, mountain biking etc. My guide Susana spoke English but was willing to help me practice Spanish. She was also super interesting and knowledgeable!”

Questions and answers about Plateros Spanish School

Are there stairs at school?
“Yes, there are stairs at the school.”
Manuel García, Administration from Plateros Spanish School - May 16, 2024
You manage several language schools in several places in Mexico: Do you personally like the Plateros School? Why?
“- The classes are very small with a maximum of 5 students. Other schools have 8-10 students on average. You'll make faster progress because the lessons can be designed much more individually.
- Cultural city tour included in the welcome package.
- Welcome party.
- Accommodation in host families was rated very well (4.8/5.0)
- Guanajuato is one of our students' favorite destinations”
Sabine Krafack, LanguageCourse.Net - Feb 27, 2024
How many hours do you realistically need in the afternoon to prepare the day's lessons?
“I think you should get by with 1 hour of follow-up and homework. It depends on your motivation, and how much you want to learn or explore the city.”
Sabine Krafack, LanguageCourse.Net - Feb 27, 2024
What is the maximum number of students per class in the 25-lesson intensive course at Plateros Spanish School?
“Maximum: 5 / Average: 4 - This is a super small class!”
Sabine Krafack, LanguageCourse.Net - Feb 27, 2024
What are the cancellation conditions in an emergency?
“Free cancellation of lessons is currently possible up to 14 days before the start of the course. Free change 10 days in advance. If you cannot come at short notice, then it may make sense to take out travel cancellation insurance. Many credit card providers have this in their programme if you pay with a credit card. Is it okay for the host family if a complete Spanish beginner stays with them? I would try to involve myself in a conversation in some way.
“Yes, of course, it's best to jump straight into the deep end. The families have experience with this and this is the quickest way to learn Spanish. If things really don't go any further for language reasons, there are always English or translation services on the Internet.”
Sabine Krafack, LanguageCourse.Net - Feb 27, 2024
I am interested in staying in a host family with breakfast only. How do most others do it? I thought that maybe we would meet up with the other students in the city in the evening. Is that so, or do most people stay with their host families in the evenings?
“It's actually a mix. The advantage of half board is that you have even more contact points to practice your Spanish because some meals are eaten with the family. Others like to eat out in the evening and prefer just breakfast. If you book a host family, I most often recommend half board. If you want to go out in the evening, you can either do it before/after dinner or you can talk to the family if you don't come to dinner. Sometimes you can get a packed lunch for the day instead. That depends on the family.”

Could you please tell me if the school belongs to The National Education System?
“The schools accredited by the National Education System are the schools that can offer university credits and that's not our case.
In general, the language schools are part of the "Turismo Idiomático" and are all under the supervision of the "Secretaria de Hacienda".”
