What we like about the school
  • Convenient location on the 1st basement floor of Hakata Station.
  • Award winning JaLS GROUP since 2015.
  • Small class sizes
What we dislike about the school
  • An older average age per class than in other schools in the same city.

Venue: Fukuoka JALS is located in the Hakata Ward of the city of Fukuoka. Near to the port and the main attractions of Hakata Ward, once a city in its own right, the school is about a 10 minute trip by public transport to the main downtown area. Nearby attractions within walking distance include the Hakazakigu and Kushida shrines, the Shofukuji Temple and the Canal City shopping centre. The school is on a direct line to the Fukuoka Airport, and travel between the two takes 10 minutes.

Focused study: Fukuoka JALS is a school specialising in language learning for adults over 30. Classes are small and, in a group of like-minded students, learning can be quick paced. The biggest difference between this school and other JALS schools is that the curriculum and activities have been adapted thematically for adult students. The Fukuoka campus is small, with a maximum of 50 students at any given time, allowing for a more individualised attention to all students.

Getting around: The school is literally connected to Kyushu’s main train station, Hakata, so getting around Fukuoka and nearby destinations is simple. Both intercity and suburban trains as well as the subway all stop here.

Study Options: In keeping with Fukuoka JALS’ mandate of themed programmes adapted to adult students 30+, they offer short-term study options which include Standard Japanese, Business Japanese, JLPT exam preparation, and Language and Culture courses. The Language and Culture courses follow a season based theme, as well as general.

Overall rating

“The teachers were all friendly and approachable. There was a clear structure. There was a good atmosphere. The language of instruction was predominantly Japanese.”
“The system was incredibly inflexible. There were hardly any opportunities to change classes - simply because there were hardly any classes on site. Since the students in Fukuoka are mostly from Taiwan, there were mainly upper-level classes, so there were few opportunities (to switch) for the lower ones.

There was no serious opportunity to learn kanji at all. When asked, they played "Japanese dead", i.e. they kept quiet. Although we were involved in small conversations before and after class, the lessons were almost exclusively about grammar. With the exception of two teachers, pure "book didactics" were used.

Explanation as it is in the book, then two sentences, now you have understood it. Plus weekly tests that were not corrected in a meaningful way. (Since I am an English teacher, I know about these things… Motivation and long-term learning are different).

I believe that a person taking a 4-week course is in good hands there. You are then together with others who are similarly timed, which fits. As a long-term student, as I was, it was difficult. I was put on a course that was too difficult at the beginning - simply because the one that was more suitable for me was actually full (which I only realised later).

When I pulled the ripcord after a few weeks, I had to go to an absolute beginners course. That was very unsatisfactory for another four weeks.
The private lessons I had booked beforehand to try and keep up were not very helpful: nice, but not prepared, far too expensive for virtually no help.

Some of the activities were appealing. However, they never went beyond "doing". You didn't get any background information on cultural particularities (because that's what it was all about).

The school is located in the basement of the train station. No daylight, the train rattles overhead, the air was often bad in the tiny rooms.”
Insider tip: “If possible, venture out on your own little trips in the surrounding area early on.”
Quality of teaching / language progress: Too inflexible.
Other comments: Unfortunately, the management changed after a few weeks. In my opinion, the current manager is hardly qualified to run the place. She speaks fluent Chinese, but has little command of English and does not have a pleasant manner (perhaps this is due to insecurity??) The woman who organised the activities, on the other hand, was a wonderful young woman.

“The teachers are all wonderful and I loved that there were so many activities that you could join.”
Insider tip: “Figure out in advance how to get to the school. It is located in the basement of the train station of Fukuoka, and it is a real maze, ;) It took me two days of getting lost and being late for class until I got it right.”
Quality of teaching / language progress: I've found the standard course to already be pretty intense, so don't worry that you'll not be learning enough.
Other comments: One of my absolute favourite language schools so far! The atmosphere is so welcoming. The teachers are warm and make you feel at ease.

"My room was quite well located, the furniture was a bit weird: small room but huge sofa, mini table and smallest stool. I am 180cm, I couldn't actually sit there. There was exactly one set of bed linen. So I had to wash in the morning and hope that the laundry was dry in the evening. Overall, there was a lack of some things in the kitchen, appliances were available.

The evaluations by students after they complete a course is excellent. The discount for using your website is also a great incentive. It also would be wonderful if the website would include more cities and a bigger selection of schools in each city.
