What we dislike about the school

Location: CAREL Royan is located in the seaside resort town of Royan, on France's Atlantic coast. The school is within walking distance of the town centre, its coastline, and many of Royan's attractions. Around the corner from the school, students can find the Planet Exotica Wildlife Park, the Cinema de Lido Movie Theatre, several eateries and other sites of interest.

Course selection: The school provides a variety of courses for both adults and juniors throughout the year. In addition to year-round General French programmes for adults, available to students of all levels, CAREL also provides fully-immersive junior programmes throughout the summer months. Programmes for specific learning in Exam preparation (DELF/DALF), French for Professionals, Teacher Training, and Business French are also readily available. The school also provides a range of courses for learning English, German, Russian and Spanish.

Getting around: The school is close to bus routes, helping students get across to the further points of the town with ease. The Royan train station is also within a 650m walk of the school, ensuring arrivals and departures are available via public transport. The centre of the town and its port are very pedestrian-friendly.

Further information: Created by the University of Poitiers and the City of Royan over 50 years ago, the CAREL school has many years of experience giving language courses in several languages.

The General Intensive French programme offered by CAREL academy from their Royan location is entirely adapted to the current abilities of each student, as each participant is assigned to a group that is appropriately stimulating and challenging for where they are right now in their French language journey.

You can look forward to studying with their tried and tested methods for adult learners, which will be supported by a range of reading and listening materials. The academy’s goal is to get all of its students to a point where they can express themselves easily across many different contexts, whether that be at work, on a university course, or simply in everyday life.

“I liked the classes generally. I felt the teaching was very good though unfortunately most of our time at Carel was not spent learning French.”
“I did not like the activities, which I felt spent much too much time doing nothing. Further, French was not spoken during them to the extent that it was difficult if one did not speak much English or Spanish.”
Details of the review
Other comments: If you are not coming with a group, afternoon activities may be considerably less enjoyable.

“Not too much.”
“I felt that I needed to be in an immersion class rather than doing a lot of grammar exercises. I know some grammar and I thought that by being in an immersion class I could learn more grammar. I had indicated that my issue with learning French was listening for comprehension. One of the 2 teachers that I had did not know English, so she spoke French, which was good. By the way, I only took 3 classes; the rest of the time I took private lessons as recommend by one of the teachers. Maybe that was a mistake.
Also, I never used the audio lab, nor was it suggested to use it.
There was no orientation prior to the first class on how or where to use the facilities.”
Insider tip: “Ask questions before signing up.”

“Good standard of teaching.”
Insider tip: “If you are paying your own fees negotiate with the school so your needs are met, otherwise you will join an existing class which may not work for you.”
Details of the review
Other comments: The first week did not work for us as the students not paying their own fees did not seem to be committed to learning and it was very disruptive. Also I did not need experience in presenting a project - a waste of time for me.

“Nothing about the school. Multiactivities were the best.”
Insider tip: “Think twice before you decide to go there. Better to go with a companion.”
Details of the review
Other comments: The school did not offer all levels and did not inform me that my level was not there. I was put in a lower level which obviously did not contribute to a significant progress in my French. I was completely left alone in my free time without any supervision from any adult even though I am only 14. My parents didn't like it, of course.

“The mix of nationalities (on average about 80 students from 20 nations) and ages (approx. 21-60 years). A good value for money. The city of Royan is not comparable to places like Nice, Paris, Bordeaux, but there are many possibilities for activities, and during the week, it is easier to focus on the lessons than in the above mentioned places.”
Insider tip: “The horseback ride through the forest next to St. George de Didonne is also great for beginners who have never even ridden before!”

Other comments: My accommodation in a host family was a bit grubby but my hostess was very friendly, helpful, and a good cook of the French cuisine! Also, she talked a lot with me, so I would absolutely recommend to stay with a host family. However, you should be prepared that the idea of cleanliness and order may be different than your own.

"The house was fine and clean. Although it was far they left you a bike but it was quite ramshackle. The woman was attentive and tried to offer everything she could, but after dinner (at 19:30, since she couldn't have dinner later) she fell asleep and it is a shame to go to a family and not being able to practice the language. Also, every day we receive phone calls at 6 in the morning, I think it is not hours if you have people. Finally, although the woman did everything good, I do not think she is old enough to continue welcoming people.
