Location: Colegio de España is a Spanish language school that fits in with the theme of the city, with over 45 years of experience teaching the Spanish language, its history speaks for itself as a well-established language school. Furthermore, you will find the school nested in a 17th Century historical building just 2 minutes from the main Plaza Mayor, and 6 minutes from the Cathedral, so you can fully digest the wonders that Salamanca has to offer. The city has some traditional dishes, so come and find out what a hornazo or farnato tastes like.

School facilities: Whilst the shell of the school is a beautiful old traditional building inside is a different story with excellent facilities including a computer room, library, movie room, rooftop terrace, terrace, lounge and garden.

Course information: All the staff at Colegio de España are highly trained with degrees in Linguistics and Humanities and interests in other fields creating a wonderful selection of courses. Some of these courses include the standard general language courses, Spanish and business, exam preparation classes, family and junior programmes as well as a programme for seniors. The most notable course is the Hispanic classes that can be taken in a termly module or for a full year course. The content of the lessons push the students that step further in learning the Spanish language, by incorporating the culture of both Spain and the Hispanic countries to completely understand the language.

Colegio de España offers its students the chance to improve their Spanish skills in a short period of time. You will study the Spanish language across all areas, including oral communication skills, written expression, and grammar and vocabulary. The teachers will prepare you to handle real situations across a range of contexts, which might include writing a formal email, expressing your opinion in a sensitive way, among many other examples.

There are 4 lessons every day, from Monday to Friday. All students will be assigned to a group that most closely resembles their own current Spanish level - and these groups will also be a maximum of 12 participants, making communication with your teachers and your fellow classmates all the easier.

Student reviews about "Special Intensive Course" at Colegio de España
Wieslawa 4.0
"I am very satisfied."
Wolfgang 4.0
"The course definitely helped me to achieve my language goal - very committed teacher (Carmen) in the conversation class."
Chiaki 4.0
"I enrolled in the 25-hour weekly course. The final hour is dedicated to a conversation class, where the focus is on discussing a specific topic, though the exact theme varies by teacher. Students who received their education in Japan might find this challenging, but for me—since I didn't speak much during the preceding four hours—it was a very valuable time."

“Very nice building, arrangement of the classrooms also enables exchange with students of other language levels - very good atmosphere, very good cooperation.”
“Two city tours in 2 weeks (commendable), but the second tour should definitely have been conducted in English (as my class was told at the beginning of the course).”

“The international family environment at the same time , the professionalism of the teachers, the location of the school in the historic center”
“Being a historic building, the lack of air conditioning with the high temperatures of the city and the period was the biggest inconvenience”

“The teachers and administrative staff were very kind. I loved that the school's location was in the city center, allowing me to commute daily through a beautiful neighbourhood.

I'm not very familiar with European vacation schedules, so I thought August might be the busiest, but surprisingly, June and July had more students. There were many young participants attending the junior programs. Since I stayed for two months, I was able to take part in almost all the activities offered outside the travel trips.”
“Naturally, there is no air conditioning. I don't know what winter is like, but days exceeding 35℃ were difficult. Since the area is at a high altitude, the mornings are refreshing.

Although having fewer students might seem beneficial for speaking up, there's a possibility of being placed in the same class as people with very different language levels. I believe this can be stressful for everyone involved. I realise this is unavoidable since private lessons are offered as a separate course.
In most of the classrooms, the desks were too small for the textbooks”
Insider tip: “The school did not send any communication beforehand, but when I arrived on the first day, I was greeted warmly. While starting on the designated 'Beginner's Day' is highly recommended, it is absolutely fine to start mid-week if your schedule doesn't allow it. I highly recommend this school.”
Details of the review
Quality of teaching / language progress: I enrolled in the 25-hour weekly course. The final hour is dedicated to a conversation class, where the focus is on discussing a specific topic, though the exact theme varies by teacher. Students who received their education in Japan might find this challenging, but for me—since I didn't speak much during the preceding four hours—it was a very valuable time.

“I would not recommend this home stay accommodation. The facilities were antiquated and not in the best condition. The bed was uncomfortable. The room was in a noisy location, making it very difficult to sleep at night. And the meals were not at all to my liking. Also, I had some stomach distress after meals. I think cooked food was left at room temperature too long.”

“The situation in the heart of historic Salamanca.”
Insider tip: “In off-peak periods, there isn't a lot of social activity organised by the school. So you may find it a bit lonely. Bring plenty to do in the evenings and a good pair of walking shoes so you can explore the city.”
Details of the review
Other comments: The college and staff were really nice. The teaching was very good. I had two reservations about the set up. First, on the first day, another student and I were kept waiting for 30 minutes in a classroom on our own and did not know what was going on. We weren't given a proper learning needs assessment. Secondly, there was no activity programme operating. We were just given the option of a bring and share meal with the other students.

Questions and answers about Colegio de España

What is the recommended pocket money per week for students attending the junior programme?
“All meals are included, also afternoon activities are included (except for the one-day trip to La Alberca, which is optional). It is hard to say how much the student needs weekly, mainly that would be if she wants to have a drink during breaks or the afternoons or go shopping.”
Sophie L'Enfant, Administration from Colegio de España - Apr 13, 2023
My daughter will be attending the summer programme. Can I wire money to the school and have them provide it to her on a weekly basis for 3 weeks?
“Yes. You could send a wire transfer to the school indicating how much you want us to give her weekly.”
Sophie L'Enfant, Administration from Colegio de España - Apr 13, 2023
How is transportation working from the airport and back at the end of the trip?
“We need all information related to your flight (flight number, terminal of arrival, time of arrival, contact phone number), and the taxi driver from the school will be waiting for you inside the terminal; on the return, he will take you to the check-in. ”
Sophie L'Enfant, Administration from Colegio de España - Apr 13, 2023
Can we have an emergency contact number in case my daughter does not find the school representative when she arrives?
“We will give you the emergency contact details about a week before her arrival.”
Sophie L'Enfant, Administration from Colegio de España - Apr 13, 2023
What is the practice for foreign students when it comes to making their phone work? Do they purchase local sim cards?
“It depends on their phones. At the time of writing, it costs about EUR 10 to get a new sim card here in Spain, but normally many phones work with the roaming they have.”
Sophie L'Enfant, Administration from Colegio de España - Apr 13, 2023
Who is my contact during my daughter's stay?
“You can contact the school during opening hours, and for any emergencies, you can contact the emergency number of the school or the host family.”
Sophie L'Enfant, Administration from Colegio de España - Apr 13, 2023
In case my daughter falls sick and needs to see a doctor, how will she get supported?
“She will get support from the school and/or her host family.”
Sophie L'Enfant, Administration from Colegio de España - Apr 13, 2023
For juniors, how often is the room cleaned and their clothes washed?
“Cleaning is done daily and laundry once a week.”
Sophie L'Enfant, Administration from Colegio de España - Apr 13, 2023
Is lunch covered for juniors? Is it a lunch box or lunch back at the family's house?
“All meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) are taken with the host family”
Sophie L'Enfant, Administration from Colegio de España - Apr 13, 2023
Are there house rules for junior students to be aware of?
“Students will be a member of the host family so they should follow the normal house rules (respect the time for meals, no noise at night, etc....)”
Sophie L'Enfant, Administration from Colegio de España - Apr 13, 2023
Do you have any advice for Junior students travelling for the first time?
“We recommend students come with an "open mind". By this, I mean that life and culture in Spain can be different from what they are used to.”
Sophie L'Enfant, Administration from Colegio de España - Apr 13, 2023
We arrive already on Friday. Is it possible to do the airport transfer on this day or is it only possible on special days?
“Collection is also possible on other days by prior arrangement.”
Martin Zakostelecky, LanguageCourse.Net - Mar 24, 2023
Will we be picked up in a car/taxi? How long does the journey take?
“The airport transfer usually takes place in a car (depending on the number of people travelling). The transfer takes between 2.5 and 3 hours from Madrid to Salamanca.”
Martin Zakostelecky, LanguageCourse.Net - Mar 24, 2023
I am an adult student interested in booking a Spanish program and homestay accommodation. Is homestay accommodation recommended to mature students?
“Homestay is the option that I recommend for a true, full-on immersion experience and if you include either full or half board, then you also get to keep practicing around the dinner table, learning much more about the culture and traditions than you would otherwise. This is indeed also recommended for mature students.”
Ana Carolina, LanguageCourse.net - Mar 17, 2022
