Student reviews about "50+ Course" at Debla
Dieter 5.0
"Expectations met"
Martin 5.0
"It was nice to have a mix of people from different countries, but also to have post-university students in their late 20s and early 30s. Perhaps it should be called "mature students" - 50+ age should not be a restriction."
Johnny 5.0
"I was in a mixed group with a lot of young people, but it was fine. Debla could make more detailed descriptions in the material so it's easier to follow up. Many of us would like to see a result list for the tasks so that you are sure to have the correct answer."

“Most of the teachers are very motivated and good at their job. They cover the material at a good pace (I was in B1) and in a period of 3 weeks they have covered most of the material of 1 level and continue with a new level (in my fall between B1 and B2, B12. You have classes in the morning from 9:00-13:00, or in the afternoon from 14:00-18:00. 4 x 50 minutes lessons, 1 teacher for the first 2 hours, other for the last 2 lessons. Groups are small (4-8), sometimes larger if groups are merged (max 12). Classrooms are small and not all have air conditioning. Lessons go fast.”
“I didn't like the slope to get to school very much. But on the other hand, you have a beautiful view once you get there. Lots of young students in groups (15–18 years old), most from Denmark, Bulgaria, Germany, Italy. Few people above this age during August, September. (Beyond that I don't know) This was a disadvantage for me because I was hoping for some connection.”
Insider tip: “Too much.”

“The way they teach ! They are ENORMOUSLY positive and always cheerful! I had a super good group but you have to be lucky with that. They were between 63 and 16 years old ... that was adjusting ! The family I stayed with was really great! I recommend it to everyone !”

“A family-friendly atmosphere, many age groups represented, super friendly teachers who are passionate about their job, beautiful classrooms and school overall, varied and fun activities, relatively central location.”
“There's really nothing negative to say. Perhaps only that the school is located on a narrow one-way street with limited parking, and on top of a hill. This makes it difficult to get there by car and strenuous to get there by bike. My recommendation: walk or take the bus!”

“The environment is beautiful, the vast majority of the teachers are very nice, and the classes have a very relaxed atmosphere. The administrative staff is friendly and ready to help with everything, accommodations, activities, etc.”
“There were so many tour groups in February and March that the school became very noisy and there were often lines for the restrooms. Individual teachers have too little competence and responsibility.”

Excellent guided tours of Alcazaba and Gibralfaro with Juan Ja.”
“Cancellation of activities at the last moments due to lack of people, no volleyball on the beach, reductions in the number of lessons without prior warning when the number of students is less than 3, the cooking activity a little expensive (more than EUR 30) to learn how to make an omelette (tortilla) without meat, fish or drinks.”

The friendliness of the teachers and administrative staff
The availability and friendliness of everyone
The outdoor classes - the questions to ask passers-by
The atmosphere”
“Unfortunately, the classes were not at my level on the 1st day, even though I had pointed this out before the start of the course (I was not listened to on this point).
A test before the course started would have avoided having to change classes during the week.
I was then placed in a class that was in its 2nd week (lesson 5)”

Quality of teaching / language progress: It was nice to have a mix of people from different countries, but also to have post-university students in their late 20s and early 30s. Perhaps it should be called "mature students" - 50+ age should not be a restriction.

“Good teaching, location and value for money”
“Needed a library, larger social area (café) as hot outside, not the best at communicating activities as I missed the deadline for the weekend one. Student base too heavily from one country (Germany) which all form large groups and socialise with themselves, speaking in German - needs to be advertised a more varied demographic in this respect.”

“The experience overall was exceptional. Teachers were very motivated, friendly and organized. The classes had a good size, around 6-8 students depending on the days. On the first day I found out that with 4 hours (4x50min) of classes, you have 2h of grammar and 2h of conversation. It is a very good split, the teachers adapt very well to the level of the class and keep everyone involved. The school is a bit up the hill about 300m from the sea with fabulous views from the bright classrooms and the terraces. I can definitely recommend Debla.”
“Nothing negative to tell.”

Quality of teaching / language progress: The DELE exam preparation class that I took focused a lot on speaking and organizing a talk to prepare for the speaking part of the exam. The teachers were very challenging, which was exactly what I needed to make progress with my speaking.

“Inspiring and interested teachers”
“This is not necessarily a criticism. I realised in a class of Italian, Danish, German and Chinese speaking students how much the Italians (and probably the French) are facilitated in the study of language. This implies a faster possibility of progress, at least at the initial level, than a class like the one I took part in. Very nice to meet and compare, but a very large gap in Spanish comprehension.”

“The price/quality ratio, the location of the school, the organisation and facilities were very good. The excursion to Seville was very well organised, as was the city tour.”
“I cannot rate the quality of the teaching as very good. The teachers spoke very quickly, so I often didn't understand the tasks and explanations. I was at level A2. The blackboards in the grammar section were not structured, it was written chaotically. I would have liked to see a coloured picture to memorise the word endings or something similar. The language section was okay, with good ideas.”

Details of the review
Quality of teaching / language progress: Too large a group and too many people who had several weeks of course behind them mixed with complete beginners. Not an optimal solution right away. Didn't like when the course was in the evening, the day was ruined especially if you lived far from the school and had half board with lunch.Other comments: Good but was on a hell of a road up the mountain. If you have heart problems like me, it is very tough.

"Isabel took good care of me. A nice meal every night when I had no other plans. Lived in El Palo, quite far from school and center but very nice after school and on weekends with beautiful, natural beach 5 minutes away. School and center easily accessible from El Palo, only inconvenient if you want to go home from the center late at night, luckily cabs are affordable. Walked several times to school and center, along Pedregalego and along the paseo Marítimo, where you see the sun rise, about an hour walk. (So you have to like walking).

Student reviews about Shared Apartment
Horen
Accommodation: 4.0
Location: 5.0
Room: 3.0
"The shared apartment was clean and well located near the beach, school and several supermarkets. My room was the smallest (around 7 m²) but quiet (well, that also depends on the roommates and neighbors).
Christelle
Accommodation: 5.0
Location: 5.0
Room: 5.0
"The accommodation was perfect
Andreas
Accommodation: 5.0
Location: 5.0
Room: 4.0
"I got a room at a great apartment that I shared with 4 other roommates. The apartment was very clean, just renovated, right down from the school and directly on the beach. My single room was tiny (about 7sqm or 80sqft, that's why I gave the room only 4 stars), but clean and sufficient to study with a courtyard view. The other 4 rooms were bigger and had views of the beach. Some minor inconveniences in the apartment, but the school remedied these within a day.

Which months can I do a Spanish course combined with paddle boarding?
“If you are looking for paddle boarding lessons, it is good to know that this combination is actually only offered in the summer months (Apr-Oct). This is because in the winter months, the sea is too rough for paddle boarding. However, if you are already a good surfer you could do water sports in the north of Spain in winter.”
