What our students said about Malaga
I'm not going to fill this in because the school and host family are 20 bus minutes away from Malaga. Malaga itself, a nice city and lots to do. Good bus connection with La Cala del Moral. But in January La Cala is not a nice village: restaurants and bars closed due to holidays. I didn't like it. I was there alone and it was not nice that there was nothing to do. The village further away Rincon de la Victoria is much livelier. But that was a 45-minute walk from the host family (and back again). So after lunch, sometimes until 4 p.m., that was not an option because it was dark early and often cold. As a result, you rarely take the bus to Malaga. Just practically with the school (900 to 1200 and meal time, 1430 to 1600) difficult to implement. Still, I would like to come back here, but in February or March.
In my opinion Malaga isn’t the prettiest city in Andalusia and also not the one with the most stunning attractions, but it has a little bit of everything: some sights, “okayish” beaches, a decent nightlife and everything one could hope for with regard to shopping. There are also great bars and restaurants. In addition, the climate is super nice - even in the summer, when most of Andalusia is crushed by heat waves. You can also make use of Spain’s excellent rail service and visit other places like Seville, Cordoba or Granada in less than two hours.
A small sweet town, which turns into a party mile in the evening. As a result, there is an increased smell of urine (thanks to some incontinent men) and rubbish in the small streets. Thanks to many cleaners, there is nothing to be seen of this the next morning. The beach and the harbour are very beautiful and were my second home in good weather (in February/March unfortunately a lot of rain and cooler than expected). The people working in Malaga are mostly very nice and most of them can talk to you well in English.
Málaga is one of my favourite cities all over the world, although not in the unbearably hot high summer. In recent years, however, it has become increasingly crowded, and it is striking that more than half of the flats in the old town are occupied not by locals but by Airbnb (&Co) customers. I say that as part of the problem. If you include the places Pedregalejo, El Palo and El Dedo, which are within walking distance, in your Málaga experience, you will find a great place by the sea.
Very beautiful city that is easy to get around in. There are very beautiful landmarks to visit and a number of interesting museums. Public transport is above expectations, although it can be a little difficult to understand the system if you do not speak Spanish. Overall, the city is pretty clean, but if you go into secluded alley watch your step: people don't pick up after their dogs. Would definitely recommend Malaga.
If you like a smaller city, Malaga is the place for you! The historic old town, where you live, is easy to explore on foot. Every time you discover new restaurants, tapas bars or ice cream parlors that you still want to try out. The Soho area is also fun to explore and the beaches anyway. It is highly recommended that you borrow a bike and explore both the beaches in the direction of Pedregalejo and in the west.
Lots of sites and monuments to see, tons of restaurants and bars to go out, very friendly people, which is really good to practice Spanish in the shops and streets. I had no issues with safety. The city is kept very clean, e.g. after a huge storm, all the leaves and branches that fell off the trees were cleaned up the next day. Everything is very accessible by foot if you're staying at a place near the center.
My favorite city in Spain. For me definitely the best place where to stay longer and study. Málaga has everything - nice beaches, beautiful city centre, amazing history, endless number of great restaurants and pubs and good weather almost all year. The city is also very safe and traveling by public transport is comfortable.
Malaga is a fabulous city to stay in for a short or longer time. It feels very safe. It's easy to walk about, and the public transport is brilliant and easy to navigate. There's lots to do, including historical sites, museums, theatres, the beach and walks along the seafront. I heard that the nightlife is excellent too!
The city is still very attractive, but is becoming more touristy every year, with more and more housing lost for locals and used as tourist accommodation. Some streets in the Centro historico could easily be described as "Calle AirBnB", although I have to admit that I am part of the problem.

Q&A - Questions about Spanish courses and schools in Malaga
- Which months can I do a Spanish course combined with paddle boarding?“If you are looking for paddle boarding lessons, it is good to know that this combination is actually only offered in the summer months (Apr-Oct). This is because in the winter months, the sea is too rough for paddle boarding. However, if you are already a good surfer you could do water sports in the north of Spain in winter.”Robin Rebecca Pietersma, LanguageCourse.Net - Nov 18, 2024I am planning a study trip with my students to Malaga, do the schools apply reduced rates for groups or does everyone pay the same as an individual student?“As a general rule, schools usually offer special discounted prices to members of groups of 10 people or more. Please contact us for more information.”Rubén De Haro, LanguageCourse.Net - Oct 11, 2024We as a family (2 adults and 2 daughters aged 11 and 13) want to learn Spanish in Malaga for 2 weeks. The daughters have no experience with the Spanish language and we somewhat. What are the possibilities? We would prefer to have separate lessons but stay together in 1 flat.“There are a lot of language schools in Malaga. When would you like to take the 2 weeks?
Not all schools have options for teenagers, so looking at offerings for teenagers we might take a look at Andalusí Instituto de Idiomas or La Playa Escuela de Español. When does the 11-year-old turn 12?
La Playa, for example, has a family course for students aged 4-16. They also have accommodation options in private flats, for example.
IMPORTANT: La Playa is located next to the beach, just outside Malaga (half an hour by bus).
If this appeals, please let me know your dates and I will request more information for you and also availability. ”Robin Rebecca Pietersma, LanguageCourse.Net - Jun 24, 2024Did the highest high school 2023 exam for Spanish with a positive result. Which level would suit me best?“The highest final level of high school for Spanish assumes B2 level and so I suspect you have this level. The school will ask you to take their language test once you have booked, so that they know well which level suits you best.”Robin Rebecca Pietersma, LanguageCourse.Net - Jul 17, 2023Is there a possibility that you can keep a space for me and I pay the prepayment later?“No, I am afraid we need the prepayment in order to send your booking to the school.”Louise Granath, LanguageCourse.Net - Jun 27, 2023I am 51 years old and hesitate whether to opt for a 50+ or an all-ages course.“With your 51 years old, you can opt for a 50+ course, but also a general Spanish course. For 50+ courses, there are often limited start dates so I recommend you join the general course, then you have a greater chance of finding a good language group at your level, on a date of your preference. The biggest difference between the general and 50+ course is usually the extra after-course activities that are organised. We can always have a look at the average age within a particular school if you are in doubt.
”Robin Rebecca Pietersma, LanguageCourse.Net - Apr 24, 2023Is Malaga bike friendly? And if so, are there opportunities to rent bikes in Malaga?“Malaga is definitely a bike-friendly city. We can recommend these bike rental companies that our students used during their stay: Recyclobike, Malaga Bike Tours and Bike Tours Malaga. ”Olga, Administration from Debla - Mar 17, 2023Is it possible to book junior courses outside of the summer months?“Most juniors courses take place during the summer months, but some schools also offer junior courses during spring and fall. You can find the start dates for junior courses on the schools profile page. ”Louise Granath, LanguageCourse.Net - Mar 01, 2023Is it possible to join a course in summer?
“Yes, there are courses available all around the year.”Sawsan Zein, LanguageCourse.Net - Feb 03, 2023I would like to book a Spanish course for beginners in Malaga but I don't need accommodation. Can I book the course only?“Yes, absolutely! You can organize your own accommodation according to your preferences.”Ana Carolina Dos Santos, LanguageCourse.Net - Dec 06, 2022I am 63 and want to go to a language school in Malaga for older people, in January. I also want a school where it is easy to access shops and accommodation nearby, as I cannot walk very far. Can you advise me, please?“In Malaga, Spanish programmes for students over 50s are available in March, April, September, October, and November. In any other month, you can participate in a Spanish course with students of mixed ages. The school in Malaga with the more mature students throughout the year is Academia CILE - the average age of the students is 37 years old.
Teachers have plenty of experience in having students of all ages and adapting the content and rhythm of the class to students regardless of their age.”Ana Carolina Dos Santos, LanguageCourse.Net - Nov 17, 2022I am looking for a 1-week course for mature students and advanced Spanish speakers. Is this something you can help me with?“The average age of the students at Academia CILE in Malaga is 36 years old throughout the year. The school offers Spanish programs suitable for all levels: A1 to C2.
A test to assess your exact language level takes place before the start of the course via an online form. This way, the school can place you in the right group.”Ana Carolina Dos Santos, LanguageCourse.Net - Oct 31, 2022Are there schools where the courses are for a longer period (ie 3 months), where there are no new groups of students every week?“The schools in Malaga are open year-round and students are arriving every Monday. There are no closed groups for a certain period.
You can join an existing group and new students can join your group afterward.”Ana Carolina Dos Santos, LanguageCourse.Net - Oct 17, 2022FAQ - Frequently asked questions about Spanish courses in Malaga
- If I want to book a standard course at a school with good cultural activities, which school do you recommend?“All schools do offer a cultural programme, but the school with the best rating for the cultural programme is currently Clic International House.”Robin Rebecca Pietersma, Language Travel Consultant from LanguageCourse.Net - Jun 11, 2024I am inquiring for my daughter and a friend of hers, both are 17 years old and want to come to Malaga to study Spanish. What does shared flat mean? What is the difference with a mini-apartment? As they are still minors, can they still sleep in the flats? They would not like to stay with a host family.“The schools offer various types of accommodation: a flat is usually equipped with 3-4 bedrooms, 1 kitchen (equipped), 1 living room (TV), 1 bathroom. A mini-apartment usually consists of 1-2 bedrooms, 1 (equipped) kitchen, 1 living room (TV), 1 bathroom. Mini-apartments are therefore shared by fewer students. Some schools accept students from the age of 16 in residence, others require students to be of age. If you are unsure which schools may allow minors to stay in the residence, ask one of our agents for help and we will be happy to assist you. ”Veronica Romualdi, Language Travel Consultant from LanguageCourse.Net - Feb 26, 2024I live in Fuengirola but want to do a course in Malaga. What is the best way to get from Fuengirola to Malaga?“If you stay in Fuengirola, the fastest way to come to Málaga is by train. You can buy a monthly train ticket.”Melanie Birkner, Employee from Instituto Picasso - Feb 19, 2024Can I book host family for the first week and a shared flat for the second week?“As long as you are over 18 and there is availability for both options you can book one type of accommodation for the first week and another type for tor the second week.”Louise Granath, Language Travel Consultant from LanguageCourse.Net - Aug 08, 2023Could you please tell me the apartments from different schools in Malaga? If they are the same, why is one a lot more expensive than the other?“Yes, most of the offered apartments have kitchenettes and utensils. The cost of the apartment depends on its location in the city, the more expensive the apartment is, the closer to the city center, as well as its condition, including the condition of the furniture and the availability of household items. ”Maksym Sterpul, Language Travel Consultant from LanguageCourse.Net - Mar 13, 2023How much time do I have before I have to sign up for the Spanish course?
“Usually, our company and schools do not set a final date by which you need to complete your booking reservation. The cost of the course remains the same throughout the year and does not change. However, I always tell my students to complete their reservations the earlier the better. That way we have time to confirm your enrollment, the school has time to form a group of students, and have time to find accommodation for the student.
”Maksym Sterpul, Language Travel Consultant from LanguageCourse.Net - Mar 13, 2023What is the difference between a residence and a shared apartment?“A residence is usually closer to the school, maybe even on school grounds, where you stay with several students in one building. A shared apartment is often a normal apartment, where maybe 3-5 students live, but in the building itself live mostly locals.”Robin Rebecca Pietersma, Dutch Consultant from LanguageCourse.Net - Apr 01, 2022Didn't find what you are looking for?Interested in a specific type of course?
