Location: Españole International House is situated to the north of the centre of Valencia. It is a lively neighbourhood, with bars, restaurants and cafes all around. There are a number of central features of the city including Valencia Cathedral, The Central Market of Valencia and La Lonja de la Seda which are within walking distance of the school. There are some attractions in Quartre Carreres to discover. This area is around 30 minutes from the school by public transport.

Getting around: Valencia has a tram, metro and intricate bus network. The closest station to the school is Túria, which has both metro and tram services running through it. This is reachable in under 15 minutes by foot from Españole International House. There are a number of bus stations around the school that run to most parts of the city.

Course structure: The school has a large selection of Spanish courses. There are general Spanish classes, private lessons, semi-private programmes, Spanish classes in the teachers home, university pathway courses, Spanish exam preparation packages for the DELE exam and SIELE exam, Spanish with an activity as well as a volunteer programme.

School facilities: The school is housed in an ancient building with an original arab wall running through the structure. Españole International House’s classrooms are all bright and spacious, there are patios and terraces to enjoy the outside space, student areas for socialising, work stations for further learning after class as well as a reception area.

“While the regular classroom’s instruction was outstanding, DO NOT PAY the additional expense to take their Intensive Language-Building program. It was a complete waste of time and money. Unlike the school’s highly interactive language instruction, their one-hour per day intensive program was more like a study hall or perhaps a more fitting description would be a detention-centre.

Students were given pages to silently complete at their sitting place, and once completed to (again) silently hand the work back to the teacher for her written comments; her written reviews of these assignments were very brief.

After 2-3 days of this “instruction”, I asked the administration to switch me the other intensive program that they offered—their conversation intensive program. The school immediately offered me that opportunity. But after talking to students who attended the conversation intensive program, they advised me that it was also a complete waste of time and money. As the school had only two-types of intensive programs, I opted not to spend my time needlessly sitting in a make-believe class.

Instead, I joined independent city-tours offered by Valencia (which I would highly recommend!).

The after-school activities were a disappointment, because they were not fulfilling. It was a surprise that the school didn’t offer more imaginative tours of museum’s and other landmarks. While taking a long bus-ride to walk for a few hours along a beach path, cooking burgers after class, doing yoga and/or a sports activity might be of interest to students in middle school/high school and college students of the freshmen or sophomore age, it didn’t appeal to the 30 plus crowd.
My stay with the school was for two-weeks.

There were three tours that the school offered which were worth a visit:
- The tour of the town’s local graffiti. There, the school’s guide provided lots of information about the rich cultural history behind that art-form.
- The archaeological tour was very good. Its guide was a well-informed historian who really offered insight to both the ruins and the history behind the ruins.
- A tour, which I couldn’t attend because it was offered on the day after of my departure, may well also have been worthwhile. It was of an oceanographic centre.”

Quality of teaching / language progress: Exhausting, because there was a grammar lesson at 08:00 in the morning. This lesson was stupid, just doing cloze texts, getting it corrected back, no lessons in the sense of teaching. The rest of the lessons were very good. Other comments: They all put in a lot of effort and are very, very friendly. All the teachers I had were very good, Maria José was absolutely outstanding (in private lessons).

Unfortunately, I have to rate the organization as poor, as the school management and the reception team unfortunately did worse, lack of friendliness if you had a concern or needed something. e.g. my air conditioning was not repaired for 3 months (in the months of June and July) only after asking 10 times something happened. Generally not very friendly and rather annoyed.Other comments: better organization of the residences and friendlier treatment of the students (especially reception staff and cleaning staff)

Additional comment about facilities of school
The school is located in a renovated Gothic Palace in Valencia old town. The building is placed where the 11th century Arab walls were standing and still have a large part of them running through the school, creating an atmosphere of history and mystery. Españolé has 2100 m², 28 classrooms with interactive whiteboards, plenty of natural light, air-conditioning and every other amenity to make it perfectly equipped for Spanish language lessons. We also have a large terrace, two different patios and our own café, where students can relax and enjoy a snack or coffee while practicing Spanish.

Examples of leisure activities organized by the school

Adults - Free activities

City tour, Yoga, visit several sights in the historical center "El Carmen", volleyball at the beach, fitness training, visit the Museum of Fine Arts, visit the City of Arts and Sciences, visit to Botanical Garden, Las Fallas tour (traditional festival of Valencia in March), Language exchange, Reading Workshop, Welcome Barbecue at the school.

Adults - Paid activities

Tapas evening, Excursion to Albufera (natural park of Valencia) with bicycle and boat tour, Paella evening with dancing Bachata or Salsa at school, Quiz evening at school, excursion to Alicante or villages near the city of Valencia, Cooking course of Spanish gastronomy, Sailing course in the own boat of the school, wine tasting at school, visit of the Oceanogràfic (biggest aquarium of Europe). Each activity is between EUR 9 and EUR 45.

Junior - Free activities

Excursion to Albufera (natural park of Valencia) with bicycle and boat tour, games at the beach (at least once per week), go to swimming pool, paella in school terrace, dancing class, sightseeing (City of Arts and Sciences, Museum etc.), excursions to other cities or villages (Peñíscola, Sagunto etc.), go to the beach, quiz tour, picnic, barbecue and icebreaking games.

"The family was super nice and open-minded, and there was always delicious, warmly cooked food for dinner. It was a good mix of independent living and communal dinners - I was given a lot of freedom. Only the distance to the school was a bit far and getting home between the end of lessons and the school's evening activities or in the evening after the activities was a bit of a hassle.

"The accommodation is super clean, modern and is located in the heart of Valencia. However, I also have something to complain about with the organization of the residence. The roof terrace, which is advertised in a big way, was completely locked in 2 months where I was there without any reason. Air conditioning systems by no means all work. Sometimes the school rules are somewhat strict. You feel as if you are being watched all the time.

If I opt for half board in a host family, is that always breakfast and dinner? Or can it also be breakfast and lunch? For example, if I don't want to eat with the host family for an evening, but in the city, could I convert my dinner into a lunch (package)?
“No. If you opt for half board, that is always breakfast and dinner at Españole. If you do not want to eat dinner with the host family for one evening, you can ask to take the dinner with you as a package/eat it later. It is not possible to convert dinner to lunch. There are many good places to have lunch around the school. Please note that you cannot use the kitchen in a host family.”

I plan to rent an electric bike in Valencia for the entire period. Is the distance from the Residence Resiolé Gran Via to, for example, the city center or the beach easy to do by bike? And can I park the bicycle safely at the school?
“Yes, it is very easy to get anywhere with the bicycle in Valencia. From the residence to the city centre it takes around 5 min by bicycle and 10 min by foot. It takes around 15-20 min to go to the beach by bike and there are special bike lanes! Unfortunately you cannot park your bike at the school but there are bike parking spots nearby and it is safe during the day time.”

“The results of the DELE exam take about 3 months. This is important to know in advance, if you have a certain deadline for obtaining a DELE certificate. To prepare for a DELE exam, we also recommend an exam preparation course that usually lasts 4 weeks. ”

“Courses normally finish on Friday and depart on Saturday. If you have already booked your return flight, we will need to check with the school about the possibility of adding 2 extra nights. This option is available with accommodation at Españole International House, Valencia.
