What we like about the school
  • Located in a safe residential area, just a 6-minute walk from Nice centre and tram stops.
  • The school offers a guided tour of the city on your first day.
  • Excellent nationality mix. No student nationality makes up more than 15% of students.
  • Learning progress guarantee.
What we dislike about the school
  • Do not offer favorable cancellation terms in the case of a student getting a visa rejected.
  • Lessons are 45 minutes long, which is shorter than in other schools.

International House Nice is located in the striking city of Nice with sunshine all year round and a splendid view of the Mediterranean sea. The school offers programmes designed to make learning interactive and meaningful. For students wishing to learn to communicate in French while enjoying their stay in a dynamic city, International House Nice is an idyllic learning destination. The school also assists with accommodation arrangements for students. The school is well-connected, being just a few minutes walk from the main street Jean Médecin, and a few minutes from the railway station and the sea shore. International House is also equipped with modern facilities that offer students an ideal ambience to learn, engage and communicate in French.

Situated in the vicinity of such locations as holiday resorts overlooking the coast, art galleries and museums as well as major attractions like Old Town and Promenade des Anglais, Nice is home to plenty of exciting activities and a dazzling night life. Drive to Cannes and visit the French Riviera to experience the warmth and hospitality of the French style.

This is one of the most in-demand French courses offered by International House in Nice, since its 20 lessons per week promote significant progress as the weeks go on, yet still leaving you with enough time left over so that you can keep up with your responsibilities and your social life outside of class.

Both traditional elements such as grammar and less orthodox means such as conversation activities are employed, to make sure that students receive the theoretical as well as practical context to improve their French language skills. To a lesser extent, your course will also feature reading comprehension, writing production, and culture-focused activities.

This course mainly takes place in the morning, but may be rescheduled in the afternoon in high season.

Student reviews about "Combination Course (20 Group + 10 Individual) - CO30" at International House
Peter 4.0
"Lessons in the mornings and afternoons naturally limit free time and therefore also activities. Day trips such as to Monaco, Arle etc. are only possible at the weekend. Helpful as a combination to get back into the language because it is very intensive. But also exhausting."

“The lessons were ok.”
“Two thirds of all leisure activities were canceled. The teacher in charge was not motivated and seemed a bit arrogant to me. He made fun of the mistakes made by the French beginners.

The organization beforehand and on the first day was not good. It would have been enough to arrive just before 9 a.m. to fill in this pointless questionnaire.

I find a high season surcharge unreasonable. Many students were not there in June. Understandable, because there are better schools. So far I've met about 20, of which about 19 were better.”

“On the whole, I enjoyed the experience and my French has improved a little. The location of the school is perfect, staff were friendly, classes the right size. School tried to include opportunities for students to mingle and practice language: the tour around Vieux Nice was enjoyable, the unexpected (free) conversation class one mid-week afternoon was welcome. All gatherings were useful for getting to know the other students and practicing language. Teaching was ok and I enjoyed the topic (art) in one of the two classes I attended. The other teacher over-used the Internet, was constantly searching for clips to show us of the Olympics which we had to watch and were just expected to comment about spontaneously. No structure, no questions, just staring at a screen which was giving me a headache. In both classes I attended, I suggest making more use of standard language teaching techniques like discussion in pairs before opening a question out to the whole class. If every question is an open class question the strongest linguist in the class always dominates and the weaker ones do not get to practice. In addition, when all students were brought together on the last day, why not do a 'mingler'? ie, clear the room of tables and chairs, all students on their feet, armed with the same 3 given questions and students walk around talking freely with other students instead of crammed in between tables, only able to talk to the one or two students nearby.”
“Organisation could have been better. If you ask students to arrive at 8am then you should have someone behind the reception desk to meet and greet at 8am. I was even shooed me away from the welcome breakfast by an Erasmus class teacher, claiming it wasn't for the students coming to learn French only. Most disappointing though was the trip to Eze on the last day which was unnecessarily stressful. The trip which was supposed to be by bus was in fact around 4 different trams, needless walking between stops in sweltering heat, then 15 minute wait in direct sun at the bus station which had taken ages to reach. Consequently, there was less time in Eze - just enough time to walk round the village and garden once with no time apparently to look at any of the little artisan shops, buy anything or go for a drink on the chateau terrace as some of us would have liked. We had scarcely walked round once without a pause when teacher herded us back to the bus stop as she didn't want to miss the bus. Such a short visit after all the trouble to get there. We were told we could go our separate ways back as we liked, but the idea was to go there as a group and do it together to have the opportunity to practice French etc. Apparently some students must have said something because the next thing I know we had done a right turn at the bus stop and ended up in the perfumery which was ok but I'd already been to the one in Grasse and would rather have spent the extra hour in the village/chateau we had come to see. We then got the bus back and it took us straight back to Vieux Nice! Why didn't we take the bus from there on the outward journey and avoided the endless chain of trams, walks and waits in the scorching sun? The trip was at least another good opportunity to practice language and Eze was lovely. I only wish we had had more leisure time. Why didn't she say, "ok go and have a look around on your own for 30 minutes and we'll all meet back at the chateau for a drink before we get the bus. The bus leaves at XXXX times". I would suggest that in future, an information sheet should be provided itinerary which could be discussed with students in classrooms so that everyone knows what to expect. It should contain bus times, names of stops to get on and off, show where the bus and tram stops are in Eze village and Eze beach. I would certainly like to go again to Eze without the unnecessary stress the next time.”

“The professor (Loretta) assigned to us was top a notch teacher. We could not have hoped for anything better. We are also very pleased that it was possible for the 3 of us as a family to have our own course together. Very grateful for that opportunity of the school to us.”
“The only thing is that the facilities were slightly lacking, but that’s only minor issue.”
Insider tip: “Do the excursions. They are free or cost almost nothing, and you get to have a guide showing you around, and you get a chance to practice your language skills at the same time for free, and meet with other students from all over the world.”

“Most teachers are friendly and try to involve students in lessons. There are many oral activities that encourage learning.”
“The organisation of International House was problematic from the beginning. Students who have extra classes are tried to reduce the classes from 2 days (6 extra hours) to only 1 day (3 extra hours) without reimbursement. This was not only asked of me in the first week by the head of the centre but also in the second week.

I did not feel that I received satisfactory answers and appropriate feedback. When I was motivated to do additional homework I felt judged and as if they were not willing to give me activities to do at home if I asked for them.

Organised trips were few (2 a week, but 1 was the Nice tour for newcomers). The other trip they offered to Antibes was quite expensive for just the train ticket and was a rushed tour. Additionally the brochure at the reception said that they would give us our individual train ticket so that we could return whenever we wanted. In reality they bought tickets in groups and if you wanted to stay longer you had to buy your own ticket to return.”
Insider tip: “It is better to live in a flat on your own. The school gives you a student ticket which allows you to enter many museums free of charge.”

Quality of teaching / language progress: The school is just great! A lot of students from different parts of the world, amazing teachers and most importantly, there is a super school director who speaks pretty good Russian xD Classes are held either early in the morning or after lunch. The school seems to have 8 classes and they are all of different sizes. Some classes are spacious and comfortable but there are tiny rooms where it is very difficult to move. Nobody speaks Russian at the reception, although there was a Russian-speaking guy there the first week, though then he disappeared somewhere ...

"The location and our room were excellent, and I could relax comfortably. Since it was a homestay, I was looking forward to chatting with the host family, but they were very busy, so we had few opportunities to talk. Dinner was often ready-made or pasta, and seeing how the family balanced work and childcare was, in a way, quite eye-opening.

Nuria, Admissions and Enrolments from IH Nice - Jun 07, 2024
When will the French test be held at IH Nice and when will I know who I will be in a class with?

What levels are offered and will my level be tested at the beginning and end of the course? Do I get a certificate at the end of the course?

The test at the beginning and end of the course shows the progress you made during your stay. Long-term students also take an interim test that shows their progress. For the rest of the week, classes will always begin at 9:00.”

I am looking to do a conversation based French class while I am visiting the Nice region with my family in July. I'm an adult student, and my French level is about B2. Wondering what the age group of the class at International House might be. Also, I'm not sure of the meeting time of the class each day. Would you have that information?
“The intensive course includes 20 lessons per week (scheduled from Monday to Friday: 9:00 - 12:00). It is a standard course, you'll study all aspects of the language: speaking, reading, writing, grammar. Focus is on conversation. You can start any Monday. You'll take a placement test on the first day and you'll be placed with the right group according to your level. The school also offers conversation classes with 10 lessons per week (schedule from Monday to Friday: 13:30 - 15:00). The average age during summer is 20-28 years.
