The Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur is a southern region in France. Its western boundary runs alongside Italy and its northern tip includes the Southern Alps. Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur has a Meditteranean coastline. It is along the shore that the region surrounds the small country of Monaco. The two major cities in the region are the seaside cities of Marseille and Nice. The provincial capital of Marseille has popular attractions in and around the city including Massif des Calanques, Château d'If and the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde. The Promenade des Anglais is a long promenade found in the city of Nice. The Verdon Gorge is a spectacular natural structure in the region, formed by the Verdon River. The Palais des Papes is in the West of the region, in the city of Avignon.
