COE-在留資格認定証明書 (Student Visa for Japan (Certificate Of Elegibility)-ISA notified school)

Japanese language schools that can sponsor a Student visa apply for the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) on the student’s behalf at a regional immigration office. Only schools authorized/notified by the Minister of Justice (ISA/MOJ) are recognized for this purpose. Choosing a certified school provides the possibility to apply for a student visa and therefore take a language course longer than 3 months without interruptions.

Note: From 2024–2025, MEXT is also rolling out recognition of Certified Japanese Language Education Institutions (separate from ISA notification).
Any guarantees for students in case of bankruptcy of a language school associated with COE-在留資格認定証明書	Policies are school-specific; check the school’s terms. There is no government tuition-protection scheme documented for private language schools, but there is security that this school has obtained all certifications possible, complying with government requirements.
