What our students said about Fukuoka
Fukuoka is not a typical Japanese city. It lacks the flair that many people are looking for. That wasn't a problem for me because I was open-minded. It's a very open Asian city: lots of Chinese, Taiwanese and Koreans. There is no Japanese high culture on a grand scale. But Kyushu itself has a lot to offer if you want to get out of the city a bit and enjoy nature and things other than shopping.
Fukuoka is a wonderful city, big but laid back. It feels very breezy, and the locals are friendly. There is a lot to do both in terms of city centre activities (shopping, cafés and restaurants) as well as nature places to go to. I loved taking the bike (charichari) everywhere. Also in summer there are many festivals to go to, but in and outside the city of Fukuoka.
I was more there for the Japanese learning than nightlife and finding interesting things to do. I never used the bus or train system. I did walk 40 minutes to the zoo and the botanical gardens (both were the best I'd ever been to, amazing even).
It has everything you would expect in a big city and is more easily organised than Tokyo. There are many options for afternoon trips, day trips and weekend excursions.
Very interesting, well linked to other Japanese cities. Good food.
I would like to see more residency hotels
Most recent student reviews of language schools in Fukuoka

1. Classes at the academy are conducted in English, and since they teach from the basics step by step, I had no major issues even though I only knew hiragana and katakana when I arrived.
2. Thanks to the warmth and kindness of the academy teachers, the overall atmosphere is bright. Even at this early stage of learning Japanese, I could freely ask questions despite my clumsiness.
3. Beyond classes, various activities keep time flying by. (Events outside regular classes: weekly exchange meetings, cultural experiences like visiting shrines, skating with Japanese university students)
4. The lobby was freely accessible, allowing me to complete assignments even outside class hours.
I was happy that even teenagers learning Japanese for the first time could learn it with enthusiasm.

Course: Standard Japanese - 4 weeks
Student age: 15 years

The teachers were all friendly and approachable. There was a clear structure. There was a good atmosphere. The language of instruction was predominantly Japanese.
Unfortunately, the management changed after a few weeks. In my opinion, the current manager is hardly qualified to run the place. She speaks fluent Chinese, but has little command of English and does not have a pleasant manner (perhaps this is due to insecurity??) The woman who organised the activities, on the other hand, was a wonderful young woman.

The teachers are all wonderful and I loved that there were so many activities that you could join.
One of my absolute favourite language schools so far! The atmosphere is so welcoming. The teachers are warm and make you feel at ease.

Course: Standard Japanese - 2 weeks

The Admin and Teachers were wonderful. They found me a nice place that was very, very convenient to the school (within walking minutes). The teachers patiently wrote all things in both kanji and hiragana on the board.
You couldn't find a better staff. You could improve on class structure however.
