Location: CIAL Centro de Linguas Lisbon is one of the oldest Portuguese language schools in the city of Lisbon, Portugal. The school is housed on 2 floors of a classified art déco building in the Saldanha neighbourhood. The surrounding area is ripe with shopping malls, convenience stores, supermarkets, links to public transport and several green spaces. Within walking distance of the school are the Parque Eduardo VII, the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, several miradors to look over the city and the Fonte Luminosa.

Other comments: This is the second time I attend the course. My agency had not informed me about e.g the exam that took place on the third day. If so, I would have chosen to start the course a week earlier and could have moved to a higher level. Alternatively, I would only have taken individual lessons. There was no information about this from the agency. They could have asked what I felt I needed and what I had done in terms of my language learning since last year. Mondays at school will be half-hearted as new students arrive late in the groups after completing the level test. One day was cancelled because it was a holiday. It should have been clear when I booked. So, compared to last year I got a lot less this year. One day out of ten missed was something I was not prepared for. Messy Mondays where students came and went. The agency should know how the courses work and that the courses are per month.

Other comments: The extra activities were very interesting, I recommend to join them, although unfortunately they are done in English, so they are not useful to practice Portuguese. You need to ask the teacher to use more Portuguese. The detection of the student's level in the school is not accurate (level tests only for some people, when everybody should take them) and sometimes the student remains in a too low level class; it is difficult to get the change of level; I need to complain several times to get the change.

“Group courses in Lisbon are exclusively for European Portuguese. Brazilian Portuguese in private lessons.
The teachers can explain the main differences between the two varieties in class. European and Brazilian Portuguese are the same language. The differences can be compared with Spanish in Spain and the countries of South America.”

Is it possible to combine the standard course + workshop with surfing?
“Current status May 2024: If students books the Workshop they are not able to go to the surf lessons. Students usually go at 14:00 and the workshop ends at 14:40.”

Can dinner also be booked with the "host family" accommodation type?
“Unfortunately, this is not possible. The host families only offer breakfast. Also, cooking for yourself is (unfortunately) not permitted.”

Which type of accommodation is best suited for longer stays?
“For longer stays, we strongly suggest our Shared Apartment option. The apartments are managed by Cial and are exclusively for Cial students. Apartments are located around 10 minutes walk from the school.”

“I have good news for you! CIAL does indeed offer classes for Brazilian Portuguese in Lisbon. However, these are always private lessons as there is not much demand for them.

“At the time of writing, CIAL does not offer a Junior Programme for students under 18. The minimum required age to book a course is 18 years old.”

“You can certainly combine private lessons with group lessons, the course is still available. Students who are complete beginners can start private lessons any Monday; after taking some individual lessons they can join the group.”
