Being able to start each monday is a good thing but has the disadvantage that classes (and learning topics) can change every week. The organised week-end trips are quite expensive, I would advise you to do them on your own.

just two negative points: there is very limited or no access for handicapped students and the computer facilities are dated and unreliable. Other than that, CIAL is a truly EXCELLENT language school.

Insider tips about what future students should not miss
One should not expect to have a big share of speaking activities in class. You will learn quite a bit of grammar and vocabulary but you won't get a lot of active speaking experience. The teachers are nice and helpful but oldfashioned in their methodology and not very willing to change their approaches. I was in an intermediate group, so maybe beginner classes are different.
Other comments
I didn't take any individual classes, so depending on the teacher and the teaching situation things might be different from what I described. The front-desk man was very helpful to get extra information on bus-connections and schedules. Since this was not my first time in Lisbon I only participated in two extra-activities which were not satisfying. The program was mostly interesting for people who didn't know Lisbon at all- so it covered a lot of the typical tourist-spots.

I found the school a really interesting and lively environment, thanks to the different nationalities of the students. It was a great cultural experience and the fact that we were all speaking different languages forced us to communicate in portuguese, immediately using the new knowledge we were learning at lessons. Teachers are simply amazing!!

If staying with a host family is too expensive, my advice is to find a cheap hostel for a couple of nights, buy a newspaper and search for rooms. it's relatively easy and you can find some cheap with some bargaining

I am very satisfied even though I came with a very low level. The teacher did a lot to adapt and push all of us to the best. All the people I met in the school were very willing to help. I suggested that a small library should be accessible to students to know more about history of Portugal, tourism and reality of the country.
