What our students said about Mérida (YUC)

Merida was magical. There is so much to do in the city. Prior to arriving and exploring the city, I knew absolutely nothing about Merida. In my mind I was planning on traveling on the weekends to other major Mexican cities. That quickly changed once I got to Merida and saw all of the things to do in the city. I decided to explore all Merida had to offer on the weekends. There is something happening in the city every single night, and the best part, it's free. From traditional Yucatecan music to poetry readings, to dancing. There's something for everyone. Travel just about an hour outside of town and you'll find hundreds of cenotes to explore and then of course the beach. You truly cannot go wrong in Merida. As a white female, I felt completely safe. I never once felt in danger. It's a beautiful city with so much to offer!

I really like Mérida. It’s a big city, but a very quiet, relaxed and beautiful one. As Mérida isn’t right by the sea, it doesn’t attract hordes of tourists; instead, it’s mostly just individuals or small groups on day trips. This means Mérida remains a Mexican city where Spanish is spoken. Perfect for language students :-). There’s plenty to see and do. The people are friendly and open. Even as a woman, I feel safe, even in the evenings. There are relatively few cars on the roads and plenty of cycle paths. I absolutely loved getting about on my hire bike!

5.0Ute Germany

I wouldn’t visit Merida in our own simply because I missed having more nature and less concrete. The zoo was truly depressing with cages that were way too small. The interactive installation at La Peni is a highlight and should be recommended to everyone young and old. It was too hot to do much else. But the school is totally worth the trip.

5.0LISA

I really enjoyed my stay in Merida. I didn’t realise it was rainy season when I was there, so it was a fun experience. I’ve learnt the importance of discussing the weather in Mexico ‘hay calor!’ Thelma is amazing and helped me to navigate my way to and from Las Brisas from Mérida central.

5.0Siobhan Australia

Merida is a great city with many sights and a very good infrastructure. The historic center with its nice bars and restaurants is particularly beautiful. The traces of the ancient mayas can be found everywhere. Public transport is available and it is also very safe on the way home at night.

4.0Simon

It is the safest city I have been to. I have never been bored at anything in the city. Awesome public transportation even at nightime. Climate was a little tough for me.

5.0Jeong

It's a wonderful city with a very interesting colonial historic district. It is peaceful and I never felt unsafe walking the streets, day or night.

5.0William

There are many beautiful things within 1h from Merida like the sea or cenotes.

5.0Anja Mexico

Safest city in Mexico. Wonderful hip cafés and restaurants

Most recent student reviews of language schools in Mérida

Spanish Center

The school is small and very cosy. The teachers pay particular attention to each student’s individual level of Spanish and tailor their teaching accordingly. The lessons are focused on specific content, with time set aside for questions and conversation – in Spanish, of course. The atmosphere is friendly and cheerful. I personally chose the Spanish Centre because I didn’t want full-time supervision. I spent my afternoons in the city and sometimes ‘practised’ Spanish in real life with the locals in cafés or parks.
The school is located on the outskirts of downtown. It's about a 20-minute bike ride, but there are also excellent bus connections.

In the summer, classes were small and we could talk a lot. The emphasis of the course was on communication and not grammar instruction. The teachers did not over correct everything you said. Erica, the chef makes delicious vegetarian meals.

Spanish Center

I absolutely loved Spanish Center Merida. I signed up for 25 hours a week and also participated in a home stay for four weeks. Prior to my departure, I met with the School Manager and she answered all of my questions and helped settle any concerns I was having prior to my arrival. The school itself is small, but focuses on the education of the students. I was fortunate to have all three teachers during my time at Spanish Center Merida. Each bring a different style to teaching that truly pushed me to learn the language. I was provided with 1:1 lessons which can be both good and tough. After 4 weeks, I am confident in my conversations and understand much better than arrival. I should note, that upon arrival, I truly couldn't speak the language. I could identify some vocabulary, but by the end of my time, I was conjugating verbs and stating full sentences. It truly does depend on each person and their drive to learn the language. I would spend my afternoons in different cafes' throughout the city and work on my homework or vocabulary. Learning another language doesn't just happen overnight. It takes dedication and work. If you're willing to put in the work, not just in the classroom, but outside the classroom, you'll develop your language skills much faster.

This was the best choice I could have made when looking into immersion programmes. The teachers are exceptional. They tailor lessons to the students individual needs while making learning fun and accessible. I’m shocked at how much I learned in 2 weeks. Definitely supplement with a few private lessons to get a deeper dive. Everyone on staff goes above and beyond and communication is clear and prompt. The food is vegetarian and a terrific way to nourish your brain after working hard! I cannot wait to return.
Thank you for a mountaintop experience. The love the teachers have for teaching is extraordinary.

As well as the desire to learn the Spanish language, immersion in Mayan civilisation is what we're looking for. Will I be staying with a Mayan family?
With regard to the host families offered by our partner schools in Mérida, we cannot confirm whether all the families are Mayan. However, as Mérida is the capital of the state of Yucatán, it is a region where Mayan culture has historically flourished. The evaluations by students after they complete a course is excellent. The discount for using your website is also a great incentive. It also would be wonderful if the website would include more cities and a bigger selection of schools in each city.

The service of languagecourse.net is great, I booked already 3 schools and I can highly recommend it. In fact, I tell everybody I meet on my journey in South America about this website and how well everything is organized.

Just keep up the good work. The organization is excellent, so that even less experienced travellers would feel ok to come to China. I also felt really good in the host family, they were really great!
