Positive aspects of school
"It was AMAZING! I loved the fact that this was a serious academic program. I am a university professor of languages and literatures and have worked with several language schools in my 30+ academic life. Accademia Italiana was very well-organized in terms of its academic programs. They did a wonderful job placing students at the appropriate level with other students who were similarly skilled and motivated. Our class had at most 7 students. All of us were adults who wanted to learn the language and culture (no college or High School kids who were not serious about learning). As a result, my class was always exciting, challenging, and fun. For three weeks we worked together and formed a neat group who would go out after class and speak Italian at all times even though we all were fluent in English or other languages. We had an amazing instructor, Pina, who had several years of experience teaching not only at this particular language academy but at regular institutions. Her solid knowledge of languages (it is obvious that she studied Latin and Greek) and vast array of interests (she could talk about music, film, literature, politics, etc.) offered my class the opportunity to talk about different issues. When Pina taught the passato remoto - a concept that other language schools avoid completely because "it is only used when writing" - I knew I had chosen the right school to learn Italian, and that I had an amazing instructor. Her explanations were on point, and the examples were relevant as they showed instances in which the rules had to be truly understood. Therefore, our class combined the rigorous learning of grammar and culture seamlessly. Pina worked the hardest to make our class work as a team and become friends. It takes special talent to do that, one that goes beyond teaching, and thanks to that, we all became friends. I was so pleased with my experience that I signed up for individual classes during the last week of my stay (I would have done it for longer, but the courses there are so well-structured and serious that you can't join mid-week--a real sign that the Accademia takes its teaching mission seriously). During the last week, I worked with another teacher, Barbara, who was also amazing. With her, I was able to review the more subtle areas of grammar that were not covered in my regular course. Also, since it was a one-to-one class, we concentrated on speaking. Both of my instructors --and the entire staff of the Accademia--were true Salernitanos. They were able to offer information about Salerno that was relevant and useful. It was obvious that all of them love their city and their job, and that love made us (their students) fall in love with Salerno. The extra-curricular activities were good too. I participated in two of them, and the instructors leading them were energetic, and knowledgeable about the material covered. They paid special attention to integrating all participants by switching the level of Italian used according to each person's needs. The skill demonstrated to "read the room" is worth mentioning as one of the key features of Accademia Italiana Salerno, as their students ranged from quite young (high school) to retired people. Accommodations were also impeccable. I stayed in a shared apartment. Instructions were clear and I was paired with other people who had similar habits. Thus, it was an enjoyable experience. Some of my classmates chose to be with families, and they too were very pleased with their accommodations. My room was comfortable and of a good size. The apartment was close to the school. It was furnished with pots and pans, and all that one needs to make life abroad less stressful. Unlike other places where I have stayed when participating in similar programs, I did not have to buy salt, dish soap, sponges, etc. as they were provided. It might seem insignificant, but these little things make a difference. Salerno is small enough to be manageable. There are plenty of places to which one could go for the day and not be bored. I felt safe at all times. I will certainly recommend Accademia Italiana Salerno."

Positive aspects of school
"The teachers are excellent in every respect. You feel well looked after at the school. The afternoon activities are varied. However, it would also be desirable if these were offered for only 1 person, as this is promised and is a factor in the decision to choose the school."
Negative aspects
"At times, there is room for improvement in terms of structure. The materials provided for this price were very disappointing. For this price, I would have expected at least a book, an exercise book and grammar overviews as standard, so that I would have something to continue working with after the course. Instead, several hundred pounds were charged for less than 20 copies?! That was very disappointing."

Positive aspects of school
"Great location, very nice, friendly, motivated staff. Smooth organisation."
Negative aspects
"Our teacher had a very old-fashioned frontal teaching style. Her speaking time was disproportionately high compared to that of the pupils and there was no overview of what was to be learnt during the week. Grammar was taught too little and sometimes too late. However, other students in other courses were very satisfied with their teachers. I would have liked more information about the individual excursions in advance, e.g. more integration into the lessons. There was too much and too complicated language for beginners."

"Great, lively city without too many tourists, good value for money. Wide range of shops and restaurants. Sensational, the 3 km long Lungi Mare for strolling. Salerno is not suitable for a beach holiday, but is in a great location for excursions to the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, Capri, Cilento, etc."
Quality of teaching / language progress
"Far too many hours, the extra 1:1 hours required for this are expensive and prevent participation in excursions. At the end of the day, you are no longer focussed enough. More hours does not mean more learning success. Other federal states only require 30 hours."

Positive aspects of school
"The lessons were very good, fully personalised and taught us the rules and exceptions of the language in a short time."
Negative aspects
"It was definitely too late for me that on 30 May, when nothing could be changed and I was already travelling, I was told who my landlord was and I wasn't even told the address directly. Unfortunately, the address, Viccolo de la neve, would probably not have told me that the flat was close to the school and new and clean, but super cramped and almost completely without daylight. A real problem, but hardly the school's fault as it was just round the corner from the school. Next time I'll express my wish for daylight when I book for Salerno, but I'd love to come back to the school in the next few years. Only then with a private host and early notification of the address."

"Unfortunately, all the museums were closed, but the short hikes down from Castwllo di Arechi and from Minori to Maiori were worthwhile. Swimming at the Spiaggia de S. Teresa, Salerno and in Minori it should also have been nice not to swim after the tasting. Drive Traghetto!!!"

Positive aspects of school
"- spontaneous support when changing rooms, as my room was too low for my height (slanted) and it was raining in - Lessons: first small group, then group of 2, then 45 minutes individual lessons ("Bildungsurlaub") - Special requests were catered for and grammar was explained again; interesting topics; books were provided; lots of free speaking - Lessons in groups of 2 and individual lessons: Teacher was always well prepared; answered all questions competently; very patient even if the answers to the questions sometimes took longer to form sentences; he repeated the student's answers so that improvements in his own sentence structure and vocabulary could be noted; always showed interest in what the student said; did not stick firmly to his own preparation so that conversations/topics could deviate; lessons did not end abruptly despite the end time ("Overtime")."
Negative aspects
"- Test at the end of each week I would have liked to be graded, at least an assessment - I would have liked a final test with assessment - The school and lesson evaluation form was completed during the group lessons following the weekly test. This resulted in a lack of teaching time and too little time for the assessment. It would have been better to do it the day before the end, possibly in your own room. I couldn't write everything down the way I wanted to - Evaluation of activities from the school: neutral, as I had so many lessons due to "Bildungsurlaub" that I could only take part in the orientation tour through the city."

"- very appealing with the historic centre, churches, narrow and high streets, right by the sea. - Safety: I felt very safe. There is a lot of police on site - Cleanliness: an Italian problem. Too much plastic in general. Rubbish is often just thrown anywhere and can be found in the most inconceivable places. Although waste separation is closely monitored."
Quality of teaching / language progress
"Very good, varied, it was possible to talk a lot about various topics"
Accommodation
"- First room: attic, slanted ceilings too low for 172 cm tall people. Rather for shorter people, max. 165 cm. It would be useful to enquire about height before allocating this room/apartment. Unfortunately, it is also very dark and there is only a small window with a fixed grille in front of it. No terrace/balcony - Unfortunately it had rained in. However, the school acted immediately when I pointed out these two points and I was given a new appartment in the afternoon (fortunately, same building, same floor). It was perfect. A flat with separate rooms (bedroom, kitchen, hallway, bathroom), fully equipped. Large windows with a small balcony. No extra charge for me. I had expected such a flat at "Standard". Owners of both flats very friendly - Meals: not rated as I cooked them myself. Kitchen equipment sufficient"

Negative aspects
"I did not like how we were divided into different groups. I had written what level I have done in Sweden. First I was placed in a group where the students were able to have discussions and conversations. Then I got into a group for beginners. The last week I was finally placed in the right group. We were three people who had studied the same level/course in Sweden, and we were divided into different groups. Since all the three of us are language teachers with a long experience of teaching, we must say that we are very disappointed. We have paid for ten days of education. We only got nine, due to the European Day of Languages. This day was of no interest to any of the students. Most of us left, disappointed and angry since we felt that someone had stolen a day from us."

Positive aspects of school
"The staff, they are all friendly and competent. Teachers (mostly women) are patient and understanding and they seem competent and motivated. Time flies in class (2 hours, break, 1 hour) and there are quite a few social activities in the afternoon. But these activities are enough for a month. If you intend to stay longer, you will finish all the activities."
Details of the review
Other comments
"It could be refurbished, especially the toilets. Classes can hold up to 10 people but with all the material it is hard to fit 10 people in there. I think they should only place 5 o 6 adults in each class. Chairs and tables need to be changed, and they should paint the walls and change the lights. The decorations seems old. The staff is so nice and so competent that the rest is not that important. The general lounge is a bit empty."
City/place
"A countryside town with a limited number of cultural activities. Museums are not interesting, but at least they are cheap or free. Some monuments are also free so you can spend a few days. It is surprisingly clean for a city in the South of Italy. But the city centre is not very well preserved. It is safe city and the natural environment is nice. If you want to move around, there are enough places to visit around."
Quality of teaching / language progress
"It is a small school without many levels so, I had to switch class for a more appropriate level. Classrooms are supposed to be for 10 people but they are not comfortable at all for 10 adults plus furniture and books. I would say 6 or 7 the a mire ideal number."
Accommodation
"I was in 2 accommodation options. They are both fine, situated in a busy street (the whole city centre is). Common areas are not really inviting and the tables are small. Mine was slightly bigger but not big enough."

"What I liked most about the school: the location, the teachers and the helpful administrative staff"
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
"For many trips - especially to the Amalfi coast - it is much cheaper and more relaxing to go there on your own by ferry or bus. The schedules of the ferry and bus companies are all online. When you go e.g. to Amalfi on a school-organised trip, you usually go back on an earlier ferry so that you have little time to go swimming or explore the place at your own pace."
Details of the review
Other comments
"The teachers are great but the (presumably management-imposed?) focus on grammar rather than on specific topic-centered vocabulary seems a bit outdated to me."
City/place
"Salerno feels safe and has a beautiful Old City. The beach closest to the school (Santa Teresa?) is ok, but a bit dirty and frequented by rather dodgy people. But there are nicer beaches to the east of the city center, and the beaches of the Amalfi coast can be easily reached by ferries ('traghetti') or by bus. The problem with the public buses is that they don't stick to the schedule, and especially in the evenings, there's a risk that they never show up (this happened to me and several other students at the Accademia Italiana in various places on the Amalfi coast)."
Quality of teaching / language progress
"The teachers were really good, highly motivated and helpful. I guess they have very concrete instructions what to teach each week as everybody on the same level gets to do a test at the end of every week to checks student's progress. So I can't blame it on the teachers that we focused mainly on grammar. We also made a lot of conversation, but it was mainly random and not centred on a particular topic. In the first week, we mainly practised the correct usage of the verbs 'essere' and 'avere', which is fine, but it would have been more useful to learn everyday survival phrases (e.g. how /what to order in a bar/restaurant, how to give and ask for directions etc.). In general, there was much more focus on grammar than on vocabulary. I would prefer a more topic-/content-focused approach (Content-Integrated-Learning). The activities offered were good, but in my opinion often overpriced, especially the guided walks. The classrooms were very small and it was often difficult to find space for one's books on the table."
Accommodation
"My room and the entire apartment were quite small, but very well equipped (with dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, iron etc.). The location was ideal, in the centre of the lively Old City, but still in a fairly quiet, traffic-free corner. What I liked less was that the airconditioning was externally controlled, so that you could only switch it on between 6.30 and 8.30am (when I needed it least), and from about 2pm and 6pm. I would have needed it most at night, to cool the room down before going to sleep. Luckily, the apartment is in a shady corner and so doesn't heat up badly during the day."

"Leisure activities are expensive, unattractive and almost exclusively focused on the " food." Some examples: the visit of the city tells us less than we would have done with only a brief guide to the hand (the oldest church was closed and the school has not organized a special opening for us); the screen for movies is a television screen and the school has not managed to install it properly; Furthermore, the screening was preceded by no prior explanation; we really felt the school staff did as little as possible. I can compare because I was staying in Tropea last year. There, the staff was committed much to make us love the place. I only have seen the director of Salerno for a few seconds. In Tropea, the manager was always present, knew each one of us. We have not received either practical information about the city (bus tickets, etc). Well, except as a result of culinary apprenticeship excursions, no common meal or drink was organized to allow new students to know the others (in Tropea, two hours of introduction followed by a shared meal). In short, this aspect of the school was disappointing and it is even more distressing that Salerno is a fascinating city that deserves much more than its reputation."
