Information about Galapagos Islands

Why Galapagos Islands? Situated in the Pacific Ocean some 1,000 km to the west of Ecuador, these islands make up 19 in total. They, and the surrounding marine reserve have been named a unique ‘living museum and brilliant showcase of evolution’. Located at the confluence of three ocean currents, the volcanic Galápagos are a ‘melting pot’ of marine species. There is ongoing seismic and volcanic activity and these processes, coupled with the extreme isolation of the islands, has led to the development of the most unusual animal life this earth has ever seen. Here you can find land iguanas, giant tortoises and many, many types of finches. It was these weird and wonderful wildlife that inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection after he paid a visit to the island in 1835. The Galápagos were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978 and today thousands of people visit to see the animals and landscapes that are so unique to this region.
