Positive aspects of school
Roberto, a teacher, explained things very well. He spoke clearly and distinctly and used the blackboard effectively to get his point across. I’ve taken many language courses (Spanish, German, Italian and French) throughout the world. Roberto was one of the best teachers I have ever had. Andrea, the manager, was always upbeat. It was a joy to go there every morning. Donatella was also very good.
Negative aspects
The other two women teachers I had were okay—but they didn’t use the blackboard enough and sometimes they didn’t enunciate their words clearly. Students who do not live in Italy are not so accustomed to hearing spoken Italian. So I think it is important for the instructors to speak a little more slowly, a little louder and more distinctly for the benefit of the students.
City/place
Just okay.

Positive aspects of school
Wonderful school in the centre of the old town with a very warm, open atmosphere. The teachers were very committed and ensured that the lessons were varied and entertaining. There was also an afternoon programme every day (Mon-Fri), such as a visit to a church or museum or a half-day excursion to another city.

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
Andrea and all the staff were welcoming and helpful. The course content was structured The class size was small- 3 people plus teachers.
Negative aspects
I believe that it would be helpful to ask each student what they hoped to gain/achieve/ learn over the course of their instruction. I received no briefing or questioned about what I hoped to gain during my two weeks. I was added to a class of two who had been already studying at the Academya for 3-4 weeks. I was happily accepted into the class but it took me a while to catch up/turn in. Staying with a family so that I was more immersed in Italian would have helped me… not the Academya’s fault.
City/place
Bologna, like any city, is a great place to visit if one has a good enough budget. Cities are not so great with limited income.
Quality of teaching / language progress
It was not a Senior Course…. A small group of three, 18, 55 & 72 (me)

Very well organised school. The boss Andrea a lovely man with huge interest in his students. The teachers we had were well organised and efficient and very pleasant to be with.
Negative aspects
Hardly anything. Maybe we could have done more grammar exercises to consolidate learnings.

City/place
Wonderful city. Need a few weeks to really dig down and see everything. I like that the centre is really quite small and very easy to walk around. Wonderful history and buildings.
Quality of teaching / language progress
As above
Accommodation
Lovely house, lovely room and very friendly host. Great location. But I would have liked the other house guests to be language students of the school rather than university students from other countries doing other courses and not really interested in speaking Italian. I didn’t get the chance to speak in Italian at home as I would have preferred. But for a single week it was fine.

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
What makes the school special is the incredible motivation of the teachers. They really are highly motivated teachers.
Negative aspects
What I missed as a German was the structure. I also have to say one thing. Language can also be learnt without structure. A simple example of this is how children learn. They don't need that. They have confidence and it works. But there is no structure in other cultures either. Accordingly, this is more of a German-language phenomenon.

Staff were helpful and keen. Interaction with other students was enjoyable.
Negative aspects
I was placed in a class beyond my capabilities.
City/place
Depends what you want - it excels in history, culture, architecture however I found the city was not as clean as I expected. Rubbish was left overflowing from bins and some of the old canals were uncovered and very smelly
Quality of teaching / language progress
As mentioned I was put into a course that was beyond my level and thus for most of the time I had little understanding of what was being taught.

Positive aspects of school
I liked the small classes, the opportunity to change classes if the level was not right, the possibility of coming intermittently - the overall flexibility of the attendance. The teachers were young, vibrant and skilled. The Directore is kind and helpful. The location is in the centre of the old town. The classrooms are bright and airy.
Negative aspects
I would have appreciated some more cultural content in the lessons, but maybe my level was too low.

Everything
City/place
The city is beautiful und because there are portici everywhere, you are actually protected from the sun and rain almost all the time. I never needed my sunglasses. The food is really extremely good everywhere, the city is not yet so overcrowded in terms of tourism (like Venice or Verona, for example) & you really feel that you are moving among Italians, which of course makes the feeling of being alive even nicer. I can absolutely recommend the city!

Negative aspects
I didn't really understand how the groups were made up. In my class, there were beginners or almost beginners, which was a hindrance, and people who seemed to have a bit more knowledge than me, it wasn't homogeneous, although there really seemed to be a lot of people in the school.

A simple, friendly atmosphere, where you can make progress
City/place
I was delighted to choose Bologna for these 15 days of study. It's a very pretty city, very clean, with lots of historic monuments, and you get the impression you're travelling back in time. You can get around by train without spending too much money.
Quality of teaching / language progress
I wasn't in a senior race, there weren't enough people signed up. So there were a lot of young people but they didn't always have the same interests as me.
Accommodation
The owner arrived 3 days after me, sending me a message of apology, I was a bit confused as she asked me to buy toilet paper which she would refund. My room wouldn't lock. Finally, she insisted and sent me her sister with the famous paper and a padlock. I thought breakfast was included, but the owner didn't offer me anything. However, she was happy to buy me some coffee when I asked for it. As that was enough for me, I didn't ask for anything else, but the price normally includes breakfast. Besides, I had a problem with my plane, so she offered me an extra night, which made up for it. The room was spacious and pretty. There were two bathrooms and a kitchen. All in all, a strange but pleasant stay at Costanza.

Positive aspects of school
It is everything the Director, Andrea, promises in his video. The teaching is outstanding, the facilities and location excellent and it is so friendly. I look forward to my next visit.
Negative aspects
It was difficult at first to identify the class I was best suited to. I think a few minutes assessing my skills (or lack of them!) would have been really useful before placing me in a class but knowing the turnover of students on a Monday, I can see why this is not really viable. I found the right level in week 2.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Start at a slightly lower level class and work up rather than being too ambitious and realising you belong in a lower class.
Other comments
Great school with a charismatic and very kind leader.

Fantastic on the whole. I was unlucky to be there in May during torrential, unseasonal rain and floods. I love the city now and will return.

Positive aspects of school
I liked the relaxed and comfortable atmosphere of the school. It was easy to get to know fellow students and to learn to communicate with them in Italian. I also liked the guided visits to Bologna's attractions.
City/place
I love the porticoes in the historic center of Bologna. What a cultural heritage! And the leaning towers, Asinelli and Garisenda, the symbol of the town. There are not many tourists in the city, how nice! The atmosphere is friendly of Bologna "dotta, grassa e rossa".

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
Mainly young teaching staff, very friendly, motivated, helpful. Good atmosphere in the beautifully renovated traditional building with a beautiful courtyard. As of now, there is additional school space. In case of concerns and wishes (e.g. change of class), one could always turn to the headmaster.
Negative aspects
Exact programme of afternoon activities sometimes announced at rather short notice. I think that was also difficult because the students are always different: Number, length of stay, level..... At another school in Italy, there were also evening programmes: concert, theatre, dinner together.....
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
pausa caffè, afternoon excursions, walking under the Portici to the Santuario San Luca
City/place
The town, with its many students and young people, radiates pure joie de vivre. The Italians enjoy eating and drinking, being together. In April, the temperatures are very pleasant. In August, it is unbearably hot and humid, I was told by locals.

Great school. Andrea is a good leader/capo. All the staff are quite skilled teachers. All in Italian is excellent. I learned quite a bit in 2 weeks.

Hectic, busy. Interesting.

It’s a good intro. I intend to return late 2023 for 3 months.

Didn’t have breakfast at all in the house. I left early each day. The stairs to the house were ridiculous. 90 plus-spiral staircase. No lift. The private bathroom was not next to the bedroom. But the room and people were quite nice.

Positive aspects of school
I like the location of the school. We were able to find accommodations in the city center, with a 2-block walk to the school. Donatella, our conversation teacher was excellent. She spoke clearly and animatedly. She used different approaches for each class. They were engaging and effective
Negative aspects
Ariella, I believe that’s how to spell her name, the grammar instructor was lacking on pedagogy. As a former college and high school teacher instructing individuals with varying skill levels and learning modalities, it is important to conduct an inclusive class. Ariella did not do this. She taught to the most advanced students, leaving the rest of us in the dust. Her attitude did not invite a lot of questions, and when I asked what I considered to be fairly simple questions, other students asked follow up questions resulting in a teaching moment. I think her worst practice was when she went around the room after an exercise about creating sentences using the conjunctive, I couldn’t hear the responses from the other students. Indeed, I’m not sure anybody could. A good teacher would repeat the response for everybody to hear it. Then she would do a quick analysis, pointing out the correct parts and gently correcting the errors. I sure wish I could have had that analysis. There was a lot for me to learn, and it never happened. At least I can have the conversations with my Italian wife and my virtual tutor about what I missed in the class. But, it shouldn’t have to be that way. I suggest that Ariella take some pedagogy classes to help students learn the content of her course. I got the feeling she was on some sort of schedule and was rushing through the material. Isn’t it better for some learning to happen than to keep a schedule.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
Maybe, as an introductory program, it would be good to spend a few minutes on independent activities, such as travel to nearby towns and other things not sponsored by the school. After all, we are in Bologna not only to learn Italian but to learn the culture.
Other comments
Although the school seemed to run along with few issues, there wasn’t a lot of organization at the managerial levels. A few times I wanted to pay the balance of my tuition only to be told that they didn’t know how to do that. I still haven’t paid the balance. I’m guessing that somebody will write me for the money.
City/place
Bologna is a great city with lots of activities, museums and churches. From the train station we visited Parma, an unexpected surprise. It has a great location.
Quality of teaching / language progress
I mentioned the issues with the course I took earlier. The instructors I came in contact with had a wide range of styles. Most of them were generous with their knowledge.

Response from school
Ciao Tom!Thanks for your nice words.A couple of things:- Arianna (not Ariella) is one of our best teachers. She is also one of our teachers at the MBA Program at the University of Bologna. Sooooo many students want her for extra individual classes in both our courses and MBA courses. Sorry you did not appreciate her effort to make you feel part of the class. Somehow you are the exceptions that proves the rule.-We have been on the market for so many years and we DO know how to make students pay the tutition. Unlike the other schools, our students pay the VERY LAST DAY of the course. I wasn't at school and DID write you for the money but with no success.

Accommodation at Teresa's house; she is a love and gives her best. The room is not for one person, there are hundreds of things and so little space. Nothing. No air con and a bathroom for the whole house. The breakfast, although I am not a breakfast eater, it was ok. The next day I went to a hotel. Teresa helped me with the bags because there are more than 60 steps and I can't lift weight. Didn't know there was no elevator. She carried my bags and got very tired.

Great school! I took a class for three months, came to the school with almost no knowledge, and after a couple of months I could easily communicate in Italian on almost any topic! I also liked the program of the school, which helped me communicate and get to know a lot of interesting people from different countries. The teachers were always very positive, especially the school director! Every morning at this school started for me with a smile and a good mood! In the end, I even regretted that I took the course for only three months and not longer.
Insider tips about what future students should not miss
If anyone is worried about the visa - I got it without much trouble, do not worry. Before arrival, it is better to withdraw some cash to be able to take a cab from the airport to the city and immediately buy a SIM card on the way (I took iliad, there was relatively cheap internet). For food delivery it is better to download the app glovo or just eat before the flight.
City/place
Beautiful city, the feeling that is in the center of everything :D First of all, in the city itself a lot of interesting and beautiful places to get around and see, great food and also liked the fact that you can easily get to other cities are not less interesting.

Additional information
Positive aspects of school
It was like a big family and the quality of the teaching was excellent.
City/place
I loved the city. It is very walkable. It is a beautiful city, very old. It is big enough to have plenty to do and small enough to get around. Also everyone is really nice and lets you speak in Italian even if you are not very good and if you take a long time.
Quality of teaching / language progress
I did a month of classes. The classes were small and the teachers very good and very nice. It is a small school and the students get to know the teachers and the other students very well because of all the activities. You also get to speak Italian all day, so you improve your Italian faster.

Other comments
Seems to cater to a specific market. Be sure it’s right for you. In general I liked it.
City/place
Absolutely no public toilets seen. Unseasonably freezing and wet weather literally dampened the experience. But overall Bologna is a fascinating city.
Quality of teaching / language progress
Use of a standard text book was something I expected but was not forthcoming. Lessons were enjoyable but at times seemed random. Advance notice of what would be taught during the following week of lessons would be have been enormously valuable for me.
