Why Bologna? Bologna in Northern Italy is a harmonious medieval medley. One side is a hard-working, high-tech city and the other is politically edgy and hosts the world's oldest university. It is an important agricultural, industrial, financial and transport hub, where many large mechanical, electronic and food companies have their headquarters. According to the most recent data, Bologna is the top Italian city in terms of its economic growth rate. As a consequence, it is one of the wealthiest cities in Italy and is often ranked as one of the top cities when it comes to quality of life in the country.

What our students said about Bologna

Rating: 5/5

I loved the city. It is very walkable. It is a beautiful city, very old. It is big enough to have plenty to do and small enough to get around. Also everyone is really nice and lets you speak in Italian even if you are not very good and if you take a long time.

I didn't really check out the nightlife, so cant comment on this. It was really lovely to walk around even when it is raining because of the Porticos. Great public transport system and almost always on time.

Absolutely no public toilets seen. Unseasonably freezing and wet weather literally dampened the experience. But overall Bologna is a fascinating city.

Unfortunately the weather was a little abnormal (all over Europe) as it went from almost winter-temperatures to blazing hot summer-temps.

I loved the building the school was in. The teachers were all friendly and amazing. Andrea was very helpful with things.
I really enjoyed everything about my class and the school. I would have liked to have more interesting excursions or maybe a mixer to meet other students.

All staff at A.L.C.E were VERY open, friendly and had a lot of humour. They tried to make our stay as convenient as possible. The teachers were VERY dedicated and tried their best, to teach in a difficult setting with constantly changing class-composition (new students every beginning of the week) with students from all over the world and various "levels" of understanding and language-"mastery" within the assigned levels (A1-C1). Thanks to all of them for their constant efforts! (as a former teacher myself, I admired them greatly!).
If I had to make a choice - I'd chose A.L.C.E again. There were some minor flaws (like: some of the classrooms are more comfortably furnished than others, the breaks are a little "too short" for convenience - especially if you might want to get a coffee AND use the bathroom (queuing for both of them.... )), but language-wise I learned a lot during my stay and considering the constant change of students, the organisation within classes was surprisingly smooth.

I enjoyed the program and liked Bologna. Unfortunately, I could only attend for 5 days, so I couldn't participate in a lot of different activities.
The staff and teachers were very friendly and made my stay there enjoyable. I also enjoyed becoming acquainted with some of the students. The program was very structured in terms of grammatical objectives as well as content, which I think is ideal for someone coming for many weeks to really learn Italian from scratch. Because I was only there for a week and was just "refreshing" my skills, I would have liked a little more flexibility and more chance for conversation on diverse topics.

I enjoyed the instructors and the collegiality of my fellow students. The instructors and students created a positive spirit in the classroom and the instructors were effective in balancing teacher-led instruction with group and individual activities.
The grammar and conversational teachers could coordinate their lessons better. If we are learning, say, the simple future in the morning why are we not using it as part of our afternoon lesson?

The atmosphere in the school is fantastic, the teachers are very good, they are fun, very nice to study the language there.
I thought the first day there will be a written test to determine the Italian level. In my opinion this is better. I had to change the group, thanks to a teacher who saw that my level was ahead.

Teachers and that the whole school from 11:00 to 11:30 go to drink coffee in a cafe, where you can also socialize.
Would be better to give out copies of our textbook (because they gave only a copy of the lesson on a single page), so that we can learn what we've skipped or forgotten.
