Why La Rochelle? Best known for its postcard-pretty Old Port, ), La Rochelle is 'La Ville Blanche' (the White City) due to its luminous limestone faceds that glow in the sunlight. But this 'white city' is also commendably green, with plenty of open green spaces throughout. It was originally a small fishing village founded in the 10th century and grew to be a major port in under 2 millennia. The old town is packed with beautiful narrow streets, arcade walkways, mansions, Renaissance residences, old timber framed houses, and a fabulous collection of lighthouses. The early French settlers of Canada, including the founders of Montreal, set sail from this port in the 17th century.
