Catania (Sicily) ratings & reviews

What our students said about Catania (Sicily)

Catania is a city that deserves to be better known. I was there for 3 weeks and every day I discovered something new. It's a very charming city with a soul, a real life. I walked around for hours and never tired of it. It would just benefit from being a little cleaner in places and having more vegetation, despite the parks and the few magnificent trees. It's great that there's a beach within walking distance, but it's a shame it's not better maintained, just like the beach road that leads to it.

5.0Sylvie France

Catania is wonderful. There is so much to see and experience, the traditions, the cultural festivals, the food and the people are great. As a girl / woman, you feel uncomfortable and unsafe in some areas, especially at night. The traffic is also very chaotic and the city is quite noisy, but that describes Sicily very well and has its very own charm.

5.0Emilie Germany

Catania is always worth a trip and if you want to get to know Catania properly, you must explore the city on foot and make wonderful excursions with the public buses or the Flix bus, e.g. to Palermo.

5.0Britta Germany

Very beautiful city worth seeing with a lot of history. Unfortunately with a lot of rubbish on the streets, chaotic traffic (but that is probably the problem of many Sicilian cities).

5.0Tatiana Germany

It would be a great base to stay to explore the rest of the island. I was very impressed with the local food.

4.0Helen Claire England UK

Lots of history to see and explore. Mount Etna is also highly recommended to visit with a volcano guide!

5.0Stan Netherlands

Nice, old city, but they should have a better system for waste management and traffic management.

5.0Torill Helene Norway

Historic centre is structurally very beautiful. Otherwise dirty, noisy, full of dog poop!

5.0Kurt Switzerland

A very beautiful and diverse city. It certainly wasn't my last visit there.

5.0Eva-Maria Germany

Impressive, great starting point for many excursions!

Information about Catania (Sicily)

Why Catania (Sicily)? Catania is the second largest city of Sicily after Palermo and is a city noted for its history, culture, architecture and gastronomy. Its old town is one of the best examples of baroque architecture and is also a World Heritage Site. The city is located beside Mt. Etna, Europe's largest and most active volcano. Much of the city was destroyed in the past by catastrophic earthquakes and volcanic eruptions from the same Volcano. Catania is Sicily at its most youthful, a city packed with cool and gritty bars, abundant energy and an earthy spirit in sharp contrast to Palermo’s aristocratic airs.
